Places to see in ( Cortona - Italy )
Cortona is a town and comune in the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany, Italy. Cortona is the main cultural and artistic center of the Val di Chiana after Arezzo. Cortona may be accessed by rail: the closest station is Camucia-Cortona, 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) away. There are direct trains from Florence, Rome, and Foligno (via Perugia).
The foundation of Cortona remains mixed in legends dating to classical times. These were later reworked especially in the late Renaissance period under Cosimo I de' Medici. The 17th-century Guide of Giacomo Lauro, reworked from writings of Annio da Viterbo, states that 108 years after the Great Flood, Noah entered the Valdichiana via the Tiber and Paglia rivers. He preferred this place better than anywhere else in Italy, because it was so fertile, and dwelt there for thirty years. One of Noah's descendants was Crano, his son who came to the hilltop and, liking the high position, the fine countryside and the calm air, built the city of Cortona on it in 273 years after the Great Flood.
The prevailing character of Cortona’s architecture is medieval with steep narrow streets situated on a hillside at an elevation of 600 metres (2,000 ft) that embraces a view of the whole of the Valdichiana. From the Piazza Garibaldi (still referred to by the local population by its older name, Piazza Carbonaia) is a fine prospect of Lake Trasimeno, scene of Hannibal's ambush of the Roman army in 217 BC (Battle of Lake Trasimene). Parts of the Etruscan city wall can still be seen today as the basis of the present wall. The main street, via Nazionale, is the only street in the town with no gradient, and is still usually referred to by locals by its older name of Ruga Piana.
Inside the Palazzo Casali is the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca, displaying items from Etruscan, Roman, and Egyptian civilizations, as well as art and artefacts from the Medieval and Renaissance eras. The distinguished Etruscan Academy Museum had its foundation in 1727 with the collections and library of Onofrio Baldelli. Among its most famous ancient artefacts is the bronze lampadario or Etruscan hanging lamp, found at Fratta near Cortona in 1840 and then acquired by the Academy for the large sum of 1600 Florentine scudi. Its iconography includes (under the 16 burners) alternating figures of Silenus playing panpipes or double flutes, and of sirens or harpies. Within zones representing waves, dolphins and fiercer sea-creatures is a gorgon-like face with protruding tongue. Between each burner is a modelled horned head of Achelous. It is supposed that the lampadario derived from some important north Etruscan religious shrine of around the second half of the 4th century BC. A later (2nd century BC) inscription shows it was rededicated for votive purposes (tinscvil) by the Musni family at that time.

Perugia is an Italian town of over 160 thousand inhabitants, the capital of the province of the same name and of the Umbria region.
Refounded by the Etruscans on a pre-existing Umbrian settlement, during its three thousand years of life it was one of the great lucumonies of Etruria under the name of Perusna. The original Etruscan walls, still visible today in many points, enclose Colle Landone and Colle del Sole, on which stands the acropolis. With a large historic center, asymmetrically laid out on a series of hills a short distance from the Tiber, the city retains a harmonious medieval aspect.
Homeland of artists such as Perugino, Pinturicchio, Galeazzo, the city was the destination - especially during the Italian Renaissance - for the artistic training of important personalities such as Raffaello Sanzio, Pietro Aretino, Piero della Francesca and Luca Signorelli. The city was also the birthplace of the mathematician and astronomer Ignazio Danti, who revolutionized modern cartography and who reformed the calendar by passing it from Julian to Gregorian and to Cesare Ripa.

❓Curiosity:
✱???? the most traded chocolate on Valentine's Day would hardly have had this success if it had kept the original name: punch. It was 1922 when Luisa Spagnoli - the same one who founded the fashion house a few years later - realizes that in the company set up with her husband - Perugina - the unused grains and chocolate are thrown away at the end of the day. An entrepreneur with brilliant intuitions, she Spagnoli decides to recover these 'waste' products to create a fine chocolate. The shape she imagines is that of a closed fist. A punch in fact. The chocolate is exquisite but Giovanni Buitoni, her partner and later life partner, is doubtful: how can a customer enter a shop and ask the saleswoman Please, give me a punch?. The two agree on a much sweeter name: Kiss. Perugina and futurist Art director Federico Seneca, who chooses the now iconic silver casing (the blue stars will arrive later), the package with the two lovers inspired by Hayez's painting The kiss and the famous scrolls with love phrases. But not only. The first note in fact read: Better a kiss today than a hen tomorrow.
✱⚔️ Perugia has the good fortune to keep the testimony of the presence of the Order of the Templars almost perfectly intact, both from an architectural and iconographic point of view. The Knights arrived in the Perugian territory around 1237 and an alternative itinerary to discover other faces of the city could be precisely to follow their trail.

It was built in 1556 by Gabrio Serbelloni and by the Cortonese Francesco Laparelli at the behest of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de 'Medici. The fortress stands on the ruins of a 12th century precinct, which was built on the remains of Etruscan walls. Today it hosts events and cultural events.
Cortona Italy | Things To Do in Tuscany Destinations
The hill town of Cortona in Italy is a relatively peaceful Tuscany destination. After rushing around all the things to do in Tuscany cities such as Florence and Siena, Cortona offers a welcome change in pace.
Walk up to the Fortezza del Girifalco and enjoy the beautiful view from Cortona down the valley, afternoon siestas in Cortona Town Hall Square as you drink coffee and watch life go by.
If you are looking for nightlife then Cortona is not the place for you, but there are a number of other things to do in Cortona including churches and monuments. The walk up to Fortezza Del Girifalco is worth the climb for the views over the Tuscany Countryside.
On my walk to the top of the hill I will show you some of the things to do in Cortona as a tourist in Tuscany including:
Cortona Cathedral
Cortona Town Hall
Teatro Signorelli
The Garibaldi Memorial Monument
Church of San Francesco
Hermitage Le Celle
Basilica di Santa Margherita
and last, and maybe even least considering the entrance fee, the Fortezza del Girifalco.
I enjoyed wandering round the Fortezza del Girifalco, there is lots of history there and I like to wander around ruined castles and forts, however I do not feel that it was worth the 5 Euro entry fee.
All the music in this travel video is taken from a live outdoor classical music performance in Cortona.

Places to see in ( Cortona - Italy )
Places to see in ( Cortona - Italy )
Cortona is a hilltop town in Tuscany, Italy. The Etruscan Academy Museum displays a vast collection of bronze, ceramic and funerary items reflecting the town’s Etruscan past. The museum also includes an Archaeological Park with multiple sites, including city fortifications and stretches of Roman roads. Near the Renaissance-era cathedral is the Diocesan Museum, with sacred furnishings, plus paintings by Fra Angelico.
Rooms with a view are the rule rather than the exception in this spectacularly sited hilltop town. In the late 14th century Fra' Angelico lived and worked here, and fellow artists Luca Signorelli and Pietro da Cortona were both born within the walls – all three are represented in the Museo Diocesano's small but sensational collection. Large chunks of Under the Tuscan Sun, the soap-in-the-sun film of the book by Frances Mayes, were shot here.
Cortona is a small charming town in the Valdichiana, or Chiana Valley, in the province of Arezzo in southern Tuscany. The city, enclosed by stone walls dating back to Etruscan and Roman times, sits on the top of a hill about 600 meters (about 1968 feet) above sea level. This dominant position over the valley offers a spectacular view from all over the town of the surrounding valley and even Lake Trasimeno.
The city is small but offers many interesting places to visit, among these the Diocesan Museum (where you can admire a beautiful panel painting of the Annunciation by Beato Angelico) and the MAEC (The Etruscan Academy Museum of the City of Cortona), where it is possible to see many artifacts found in the Eruscan archeological sites in the area. You can also request additional information about the Archeological Park at the museum.
You should not miss a visit to the beautiful Santa Margherita Sanctuary, patron of the city, and to the Girifalco Fortress. Both are on the highest point on the hill and are easy to reach after a short, uphill walk. Following the path that follows the city walls, you can also enjoy a beautiful view over the surrounding countryside. The Girifalco Fortress, constructed for military purposes, has undergone many substantial changes throughout the centuries and today only a part is open to the public.
Various small shops on the main streets of Cortona offer local handmade items and gastronomical products. Great red wines are made in the area (we are just a few kilometers from Montepulciano and Montalcino) and all of the wine bars offer a wide selection.
There are many restaurants in the city, most offering traditional local and Tuscan cuisine (the Chianina cattle, one of Italy's oldest, high quality bovine breeds is bred in Valdichiana).
Just outside of Cortona's walls you'll find the Franciscan hermitage Le Celle, the first monastery built by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1211, where a small community of friars still lives today. Through the course of the centuries, the hermitage was restructured and enlarged several times but Saint Francis's small cell has always been conserved in its original state and can be visited today. In summer, Cortona organizes the Tuscan Sun Festival, an annual event dedicated to the arts which sees the participation of several international stars and artists.
( Cortona - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Cortona . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Cortona - Italy

Reflections of Italy Part Three: Perugia and Siena
Perugia and Siena (along with Florence) were two of three Medieval cities in the Tuscany and Umbria regions of Italy. In those times the cities often fought one another for resources and wealth. Today, they are time capsules that teach us how Europeans lived long ago. Both regions are known for their food and wine; the best food that we ate in Italy were in those towns. But the unique characteristics of the cities is that that they were built high on mountaintops, encapsulated with impenetrable walls that they used to protect themselves. Only the mighty Roman Legions conquered them.
