Already known as Anticoli (from ante colles: in front of the hills) and from 1872, after the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, built in medieval times, the city acquired in 1911 the name of Fiuggi, originally referred only to the place of the water springs.
It would derive the name from the Latin *fluvius* - river, stream; according to another theory it would originate from the name of the fern (*felce*), a very abundant plant in the area.
It is believed that a small village, named Felcia, already existed at the time of the Ernici, the Osco-Umbrian population settled in this area of Lazio in the period preceding the Roman conquest. In 367 BC Roman domination began, and the first evidence of the properties of the local waters of Fons Arilla date back to the Roman period.
