Puebla Travel Guide - Wandering Magnificent Mexico
Puebla is a city in Mexico. It is in the Puebla Valley, surrounded by volcanoes and snow-capped mountains, slightly over 110 kilometers (68 miles) south-east of Mexico City. The city proper in 2005 had a population of 1.5 million people, while the metropolitan area had a population of 2.1 million.
The city of Puebla is the fourth largest city in Mexico with 2.1 million inhabitants and the Capital of the State of Puebla. It was founded on April 16, 1531 as La Puebla de los Ángeles. It was the first city in central Mexico founded by the Spanish conquistadors that was not built upon the ruins of a conquered Amerindian settlement. Its strategic location, between the port of Veracruz and Mexico City, made it the second most important city during the colonial period. During the seventeenth century, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz lived in the city until her confrontation with the Bishop of Puebla.
The city’s main claim to fame, however, is Cinco de Mayo, a festival commemorating the May 5, 1862 defeat of a French expeditionary army by Mexican general Ignacio Zaragoza. It was after this battle that the name of the city was changed to Heróica Puebla de Zaragoza. The forts where the battle took place are a major tourist attraction.
Traveling within Puebla can sometimes be stressful as the local public transportation system is entirely privatized, leading to hundreds of bus routes, none of which are mapped out. If you know where you are going, you can ask around as to which route will take your destination, but often transfers are necessary for long-distances, which can be confusing, especially if you are not familiar with the language. The general fare rate is $6 MXN. (Safety note about buses: they are generally safe, but they tend to carry pickpockets, especially when crowded. Always have a hand over any bags/backpacks that you have.) The buses generally run from about 7AM to 10PM.
Natural attractions in the state include the Bosque Mesófilos de la Sierra Madre Oriental in the north of the state, Piedras Encimadas Valley, Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park, La Malinche National Park, and the Pico de Orizaba National Park. The best known wilderness area is the Izta-Popo National park, which the state shares with neighboring State of Mexico.
The state promotes twelve tourist routes, seven in the city of Puebla and five in the rest of the state. These routes cover the most representative buildings of the history of the state up to modern attractions such as the Africam Safari zoo. The first tourist route in the city of Puebla passes by the Cathedral, the Palafoxiana Library, the Capilla del Rosario, Calle de Santa Clara, Palacio Municipal, Casa de los Muñecos and the Museo Amparo. The second route passes by the Casa del Alfeñique, the Mercado de Artesanias, the Barrio del Artista, the Teatro Principal and the San Francisco Church. The third route contains the Railroad Museum, the Museo y Pinacoteca Ex-Convento de Santa Monica, the Ex-Convento de Santa Rosa, the Museo de la No-Intervencion Fuerte de Guadalupe and the Mercado de Antiguedades. The fourth route contains the San Francisco Acatepec Church, the Santa Maria Tonatzintla Church, the Capilla Real, the Cholula archeological site, the Los Remedios Church and Huejotzingo. The fifth route includes Cuauhtinchan, Tecali and the Africam Safari Zoo.

Había sido la morada familiar desde dos generaciones anteriores, cuando la adquiriera Don Roque Serdán, rico industrial de origen veracruzano que llegó a ser poseedor de varias fincas más, quien la hereda a su hijo, el licenciado Manuel Serdán, profesionista y comerciante con ideas progresistas quien casara en febrero de 1873 con Doña Carmen Alatriste hija del general y abogado liberal Miguel Cástulo de Alatriste.
En 1911, se hospedaría en este inmueble el nuevo presidente de la República, Francisco I. Madero como un homenaje a Aquiles, Carmen y Máximo Serdán, precursores del inicio de la Revolución Mexicana; posteriormente en 1913 las hermanas deciden vivir en la Ciudad de México, por lo que el inmueble se arrienda como casa de vecindad y comercios para camoterías.
Décadas mas tarde, el Gobierno Federal dispuso, por intermedio de la Secretaría de Patrimonio Nacional en cooperación con el gobierno del Estado de Puebla, que la casa que habitara la familia Serdán Alatriste se convirtiera en Museo Regional de la Revolución Mexicana, siendo inaugurado el 18 de Noviembre de 1960 por el licenciado don Adolfo López Mateos, entonces Presidente de la República Mexicana
26 salas divididas en dos plantas:
Planta baja, 10 salas recreando la vida cotidiana de la familia Serdán a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX.
Planta Alta, 16 salas temáticas abarcando los temas: Porfiriato, Antirreeleccionismo maderista, Antirreeleccionismo poblano, Antecedentes, hechos y testimonios gráficos, documentales de la batalla del 18 de noviembre de 1910, muerte de Aquiles Serdán el 19 de noviembre, encarcelamiento y juicio de las mujeres Serdán,la Revolución en Puebla, el Constitucionalismo de 1917, Carmen Serdán y Manuel Velázquez.

Here my trip from Mexico city to Ciudad Serdán and Pico De Oriziba. I checked out the area and stayed in Serdan and then attempted the summit summit the next day. The ride out was nice and not as bad as I thought. I planned to motorcycle up to Sierra Negro but its closed to vehicles so I looked around Pico De Oriziba to see if I potentially drive up to the hut.
