First Impressions of ALGERIA ???????? Exploring the Crazy Capital ALGIERS الجزائر

ALGERIA. A country we have been SO excited to visit. After a lengthy visa process, going back and forth with the embassy in London, we finally received the go ahead whilst in Antigua. We came back and went and got our passport stamped and planned our 15 days in this insane country. We met our friend Wassim who runs Algeriatours16 and he took us around exploring the city for our first ever day!

El Nozha - Port Said Street - Lazoghly Square - Driving in Cairo, Egypt ????????

If you enjoy the video, please like, comment and subscribe, I appreciate it, thank you

Hey folks, driving in Cairo is interesting to watch. It is never boring on the streets of Cairo. For more information subtitles in different languages are available. If you have suggestions or feedback just leave a comment, thank you.

Welcome to a new tour within Cairo. In today's trip we are are starting at El Nozha district and continue directly to el Zeitoun. We will join a part of Heliopolis Axis until el Kablat street. After the street ends we will continue our journey on Port Said street until the end. This street cross a lot of district near Down Town Cairo. The tour comes to an end at the Lazoghly square in El Sayeda Zeinab district, located south of Tahrir Square.

I also permanently displayed the permitted maximum speed. I've heard a lot of complaints about Speeding Tickets. In this way I hope to protect you from possible Speeding tickets. In future videos I will continue this on main roads.

You have to watch out for walking people, taxis, toktok's and especially for (white) microbuses. Their behavior is unpredictable and it can lead to a disaster. Otherwise is driving in Cairo, Egypt a funny and enjoyable thing. Always wear your seat belt and keep to the speed limit.

El Daher
El Daher (الظاهر) is a district of Cairo, Egypt. It is neighboring the districts of Abbaseya and Sakakini.
Colloquially, El Daher is pronounced with D. However, it is written with a Z in Arabic (الظاهر‎).
In order to explain the history and origin of El Daher in a literary correct manner, I will continue with El Zaher.
El Zaher is named as a gesture of respect to El Zaher Baibars (El Malik El Zaher Rukn El Din Baibars el Bunduqdari
His memoirs were recorded in a long Arabic language modern folkloric tale Seret El Zaher Baibars, as the term Zaher means the one who appears.
El Zaher (1223/1228 – 1st July 1277), of Turkic Kipchak origin, commonly known as Baibars.
He nicknamed Abu al-Futuh (أبو الفتوح). Tranlsated into English: “Father of Conquest”, referring to his victories.
He was the fourth sultan of Egypt in the Mamluk Bahri dynasty, succeeding Qutuz.
The Sultan was one of the commanders of the Egyptian forces that inflicted a defeat on the Seventh Crusade of King Louis IX of France.
He also led the vanguard of the Egyptian army at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, which marked the first substantial defeat of the Mongol army and is considered a turning point in history.
The district is served by Metro Line M1. The name of the station is called Ghamra.
Alternatively, the metro station El Geish on the M3 line is near the district.

El Muski
The name of the residential area and district of Cairo “El-Muski” (المسكي) has been handed down since Sultan Saladin (1137–1193).
Because a relative of the Sultan, Prince Ezz ed-Din Musak, in arabic (الأمير عز الدين مؤسك), had a palace built here for himself.
In the northwest of el Muski is located the area “Harat Zuweila”.
The Arab historian el Maqrizi (1364–1442) reported in his historical work el Chiṭa, the quarter was founded by the Berber tribe of the Zawīla.
They had assisted General Gauhar († 992) during the conquest of Egypt in 969 at the time of the fourth Fatimid Caliph el Moez el Din Allah (930-975).
The tribe is also namesake of the Bab Zuweila which is one of the main gates of the Cairo city wall.
There are 2 museums in the district located. On the one hand the Museum of Islamic Art and the Postal Museum.
El Muski is served by Metro Line M3. The name of the station is called Bab el Shaareya, which is located at Bab el Shaareya Square.
One entrance is on Geish Street in this district and the other is on Port Said Street in the “Bab el Shaareya” district.
It should be noted that both streets are one-way streets running in opposite directions.
Alternatively, the metro station Ataba on the M2 line is near the district.

Welcome to my new tour within Cairo from Old Cairo to Nasr City. We also drive on the Magra el Eyoun street, which runs along the well-known aqueduct.

Magra el Eyoun
The medieval Mamluk aqueduct of Sultan al-Nassir Muhammad ibn Qalawoon known as Magra El-Eyoun.
El Nassir Muhammad was a Bahari Mamluke who ruled Egypt three times, between 1293 and 1294, 1298 and 1309, and finally between 1309 and 1340.
He was the only son of Sultan Seif el Din Qalawun el Ṣaliḥi (1222-1290) by a Mongol princess named Aslun Khatun. El Nassir is best known as a prolific builder in Cairo.
Amongst the many constructions of his era is this strategic and vital aqueduct which connected the Nile to the west with the Citadel of Saladin providing it with water necessary for the court.
The origin of the aqueduct has been a matter of dispute among some scholars, but Maqrizi says that it was el Nassir who built it between 1340 and 1341,
yet there were always signs of an earlier aqueduct underneath it which could have been attributable to Saladin in the 12th century.
However, in 1919, the Egyptian archaeologist Ali Bahgat excavated part of the aqueduct and discovered that what lay beneath was not an aqueduct at all, but part of an old city wall.
This aqueduct of al-Nasir was used right up until 1872.
Built highest at the lowlands of Fom El-Khaleeg (where the Cairo canal met the Nile) and lowest at the Citadel on top of the eastern Cairo hills,
this Mamluk aqueduct facilitated the transport of water from the Nile to the Citadel and revitalized the Citadel and reinforced its position as the seat of the Sultanate in Cairo.
From then on, architecture and governance flourished within the Citadel walls, starting with the Qalawoon mosque commissioned by El Nassir in his father's name.
In theory, Magra el Eyoun separated the Southern Cemetery (to its south) from the Citadel and other city quarters and neighborhoods to its north.
However, the cemetery developed around the Sayeda Nafisa Shrine proliferated the necropolis north of Magra el Eyoun whereas residential areas developed south of it centuries later.

Islamic Cairo
Islamic Cairo (قاهرة المعز), also called Historic Cairo or Medieval Cairo, refers generically to the historic areas of Cairo,
that existed before the city's modern expansion during the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly the central parts around the old walled city and around the Citadel of Cairo.
The name Islamic Cairo refers not to a greater prominence of Muslims in the area but rather to the city's rich history and heritage since its foundation in the early period of Islam,
while distinguishing it from with the nearby Ancient Egyptian sites of Giza and Memphis.
This area holds one of the largest and densest concentrations of historic architecture in the Islamic world.
It is characterized by hundreds of mosques, tombs, madrasas, mansions, caravanserais, and fortifications dating from throughout the Islamic era of Egypt.
In 1979, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed Historic Cairo a World Cultural Heritage site,
as one of the world's oldest Islamic cities, with its famous mosques, madrasas, hammams and fountains
and the new centre of the Islamic world, reaching its golden age in the 14th century.
Islamic Cairo is located in the heart of Cairo and spreads over several districts. The area encloses El Waili, el Daher, el Gamaleya, and each partially over El Darb el Ahmar and Bab el Shaareya.
The metro line M3 offers a central station in the area with Abdou Pasha. The nearest stations with El Demerdash and Ghamra on the M1 line are outside the area.

Tahrir Square
The Khedive (viceroy) Ismail Pasha was viceroy over the Ottoman province of Egypt from 1867 to 1879.
During this time, this square was built under his leadership.
Known as Ismailia Square until 1919, it was unofficially named Tahrir Square (Liberation Square) for the first time after the protest against the British occupation.
Only after the military coup of July 23, 1952 and the establishment of a republic on June 18, 1953, the square was officially renamed Tahrir Square from 1954.
The square is served by Metro Line M1 and M2. The name of the station is called Sadat.

The incredible ancient Alexandria. Immersion in the heart of the Greek-Roman history of Egypt

#Egypt #Alexandria #AlexanderTheGreat #Antiquity

Second day in Alexandria. We leave to the discovery of ancient sites that can remind us of the glorious past of the city that was the second most important city in antiquity after Rome. We start by visiting the sites of Kom el Shoqafa and Pompey's Column.

1. Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa :

The site of the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa is one of the most famous in Alexandria. In fact, Kom el Shoqafa means mound of splinters, since the area contained a mountain of fragments of terracotta objects. According to legend, it was rediscovered by a donkey that accidentally fell into one of its access pits. The funerary necropolis is located 30 meters below ground level and was dug out of the rock around the 2nd century AD. Used for burials until the 4th century, it is accessed by a circular staircase. The place is singular since the tombs show the combination of Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures.

2. Pompey's Column:

Another must-see site in Alexandria is the ruins of the Serapium, an ancient Greek temple built by Ptolemy III in 230 BC. Today, the site is better known as Pompey's Column. In fact, this column is wrongly attributed to Pompey since it was erected in honor of Emperor Diocletian around 300 CE. In the past, a statue of the Roman emperor adorned this column measuring nearly 27 meters.

As for the Serapium, it would have been closed around 325 by the emperor Constantine, and destroyed completely around 391 during religious riots. Legend attributes the destruction of the pagan temple to the Christians of Alexandria. The latter built a monastery and a church dedicated to St. John the Baptist on the site. At the beginning of the 20th century, before its excavation, the site was a Muslim cemetery.

3. The Ramparts:

It is repeated, but unlike Rome for example, there is not much left of the ancient city of Alexandria except for the few sites we visited. Even the ramparts that you see are in fact the remains of the city walls from the Muslim era. Moreover, during his Egyptian campaign, Napoleon already noted that this rampart was half preserved. Modern urbanism has done the rest of the work so that today we only find portions of the walls that once protected the city against the enemy. To see them, head to Al-Shalalat Park where archaeologists are currently conducting excavations to find the Soma, the building that housed the body of Alexander the Great in ancient times.

4. St. Mark's College:

St. Mark's College, a Catholic school founded in 1928 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The private institution, which still has French as its main language of instruction, has 2600 students. The impressive building located in the heart of the city is worth a visit. If you wish to visit the school, however, you must make an appointment in advance.

5. Shatby Tombs:

Located a short walk from St. Mark's College, Shatby Cemetery is another example of the city's necropolises. Not much remains here, but the cemetery contains the oldest known graves in the city. These tombs are believed to date back to 280 BC. A few minutes on the site is enough to take the measure of the history, the most interesting tombs being partially flooded, be careful.

6. Necropolis of Mustafa Kamal

Probably the least known of all Alexandria's archaeological sites because it is located far from the center of the city, the Necropolis of Mustafa Kamal remains one of the most fascinating discoveries of the city. Located in the Rushdie district, the site has four underground tombs that date back to the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.
