Micronesia | Yap | Betel Nut Heaven
Yap is around 400 kilometers north of Palau. It is barely untouched and is highly traditional.
Betel Nut has a long history in the Pacific Islands, its use can be traced back as far as 2,000 years.
Betel Nut chewing and its customary red smile amongst the population is a common sight in Yap.
Many people chew betel nut for the energy it produces. This is likely due to the nut's natural alkaloids, which releases adrenaline. Its commonly chewed after being ground up or sliced or wrapped in leaves of the Piper Belle vine that has been coated with lime.
It is one of the most popular psychoactive substances in the world.

The history of Micronesia. Micronesia documentary. World Of Knowledge
Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania, comprising thousands of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean.
It has a close shared cultural history with three other island regions—the Philippines to the west, Polynesia to the east, and Melanesia to the south—as well as with the wider community of Austronesian peoples.
The region has a tropical marine climate and is part of the Oceanian realm.
It includes four main archipelagos—the Caroline Islands, the Gilbert Islands, the Mariana Islands, and the Marshall Islands—as well as numerous islands that are not part of any archipelago.
Political control of areas within Micronesia varies depending on the island, and is distributed among six sovereign nations.
Some of the Caroline Islands are part of the Republic of Palau and some are part of the Federated States of Micronesia .
The Gilbert Islands comprise the Republic of Kiribati.
The Mariana Islands are affiliated with the United States; some of them belong to the U.S.
Territory of Guam and the rest belong to the U.S.
Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The island of Nauru is its own sovereign nation.
The Marshall Islands all belong to the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

WOWOWOW! Have you ever heard of Nan Madol? It's my favorite place in the Pacific Islands so far (and top 10 site in the world).
Nan Madol is an ancient city built some 2,000+ years ago out of volcanic rock and sea coral on the Eastern shore of Pohnpei island in the country of Micronesia ???????? It’s something like Angkor Wat but on the middle of a remote island...
It was a place for royalty gatherings as well as the burial site for the king and queen. I honestly hadn’t heard about it until a week ago when my friend mentioned it to me in Nauru, and I am completely blown away by what I have seen here. My friend and I were we were the ONLY ones around to explore and it is just fascinating.
Have you ever heard of Nan Madol before? Add it to your list!

A Dream Relationship with the Land in Micronesia
The Federated States of Micronesia and specifically Pohnpei was one of my favourite places so far for so many reasons! It also introduced me to a whole new world in terms of understanding what conservation can look like and here it's what can you do when everyone is both a fisherman and a farmer. Being invited to a massive feast was the pinnacle of this, not really what you would associate with living sustainably...
*Travelling all over the Pacific with a focus on conservation was a massive eye-opener for me. It brought my attention to a whole new meaning of conservation, understanding peoples dynamic and shifting relationship with nature, ingrained in their culture and practices for generations and generations.
The vulnerability of these island nations to climate changed biodiversity loss, and the direct effect this has on their livelihoods was a big shock for me. It really made me rethink the level of urgency needed for the world to tackle these problems.
So the next 3 videos (2/3) are a sort of natural response to me trying to understand these dynamics, mainly being wow'd by indigenous methods of conservation and the disastrous consequences of what life could be like if we don't get our priorities straight.*
