How I Book Hotels In Thailand And Elsewhere
Having lived in Thailand since 2003, I have booked many hotels while travelling around the country. Occasionally, I have spent an enormous amount of time trying to find the best deal. However, I almost invariably end up booking through Agoda. Not only are Agoda rates almost always the lowest, but it is a company I have learnt to trust over the years. In 2023 there were stories about another large online hotel Booking company (whose name I won't mention) who failed to pay accommodation hosts and whose customers turned up at hotels to find that they did not have a reservation. I have never had any such problems with Agoda, and the few minor issues I've had have been dealt with efficiently by their customer service representatives.

My love affair with Thailand began many years ago, but the places I really enjoyed early on went downhill very quickly with the onset of mass tourism. I looked for somewhere else and in the early 2000's I found Khaolak. It really suited me and I went back several times. Even after I moved permanently to Thailand in 2003 I still visited Khaolak and I went again in September 2004.
A few months later I was in Singapore enjoying a family reunion over Christmas. On Boxing Day word started to come through that a big tsunami had occurred and that Thailand had been hit. One of the worst areas to be hit was Khaolak.
I returned to Thailand after my Christmas break and in May 2005 I returned to Khaolak for the first time after the tsunami. I wanted to see what had happened firsthand and I also wanted to check up on the Thais who I had befriended. It was quite shocking.
At the time of writing, my last visit to Khaolak was in April 2019. It is still a very pleasant place, but compared to my early visits it has changed. Whereas before there were lots of small businesses, many small business owners left and now there are lots of large hotels. The hotels are very comfortable, but a little impersonal and the character of Khaolak has changed.
This video is simply a slideshow of still photos recording my visits from around 2002 to 2019. Some photos are of the same places before and after the tsunami.

Tsunami 2004
Dear interested, for the greater majority in middle-europe it had not been obvious, up to that very catastrophe, exactly what characteristics are shown by a tsunami (for instance 3 sequential waves). The video actually depicts the third wave of the tsunami as it impacts the bay of Kathanoi, which was not directly situated in the worst hit regions (such as Kao Lak and Patong Beach). Therefore it was not apparent that a natural disaster was occurring (I believe to no one who was there at that time). After the first wave people gathered and set up their motor bikes again, normal life seemed to continue as if nothing bad happened. A second (smaller wave) came along the street. I understand your view of me being light-headed, going closer to the coastal region to make a movie. This was due to my little knowledge of how such a catastrophe takes its course and I think that many people lost their lives due to this lack of knowledge! Some were even entering the beach area. I must admit that today, as wide-spread media representation has covered this event I do not know what the hell has driven me to go there and that an enormous amount of luck, as well as the lid of the pool maintenance shaft have saved my life. LOSTPLACE Tsunami Hotel Khao Lak
Während einer Thailand- Rundreise haben wir diesen traurigen Lost Place
gefunden. Es handelt sich um ein Hotel, das nach dem verheerenden
Tsunami am 26. Dezember 2004 nicht mehr aufgebaut wurde. Die Natur...
...holt sich Stück für Stück das Land wieder zurück und eines Tages wird wohl
an die damals traumhafte Hotelanlage nichts mehr erinnern.
Nach einigen Recherchen hab ich eine Website gefunden, die das ehemalige
Resort für die Unglücks-Saison 2004 / 2005 beworben hat.
Das Theptharo Lagoon Beach Resort wurde komplett zerstört. Man findet nur
noch das Hauptgebäude. Vor dem großen Unglück gab es noch etwa zwanzig
Bungalows, die alle von der Welle vernichtet wurden. Der Großteil der Gäste
hat den Tsunami nicht überlebt, da die Anlage direkt am Strand lag und das
Wasser von zwei Seiten heranströmte.
Wir freuen uns natürlich riesig über jeden Daumen und über jeden Abonnenten. :)

Khao Lak Tsunami Memorials and Cemetery - Remembering What Happened - Thailand 2022
Thailand was one of the countries that was hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Due to proximity of the Andaman coasts of Thailand situated just about 500 km east of the earthquake epicenter, the tsunami took just 2 hours to reach and strike the western coastline of the country. The Thai government reported 4,812 confirmed deaths, 8,457 injured, and 4,499 missing after the country was hit by a tsunami caused by the Indian Ocean earthquake on 26 December 2004.
Khao Lak 80 km north of Phuket, was devastated with 3,950 confirmed deaths, however, the death toll in Khao Lak may have exceeded 4,500.
Just north of the Khao Lak area, the village of Ban Nam Khem was the worst affected in terms of devastation to the local population, with around a quarter of its population of 4,200 lost to the tsunami and 80 percent of homes destroyed.
