Why Kolinsky Sable Brushes Are So Expensive | So Expensive

Originally created on the request of Queen Victoria, Winsor & Newton Series 7 brushes were first made in 1866, and were designed to be the finest possible brush for watercolor painting. But making a Series 7 Kolinsky Sable watercolor brush isn’t easy, and the largest size brush can take almost a week and a half to make.

Special thanks to Winsor & Newton:

Intermediate Painter Compares Six Different Brands of High-end Natural Sable Brushes for Minatures

In this video I tried out six brand new brushes for painting miniatures, all high-end natural sable hair. (Not 7 as I said, I had two sizes of the Escoda but only tested the size 1 here.) Interesting findings! All brushes were excellent quality, but the Isabey and the Da Vinci Maestro had issues discussed that would make them not my first choice. Sorry for the amateur set up, but thought this was information worth sharing for any mid-level painter considering high-end brushes for their models. If I had to rank them based on only a few minutes:

1. Escoda Reserva Kolinsky Tajmyr
2. WN Series 7
3. Da Vinci Ussuri Sable (Best Value, cheapest brush tested!)
4. Raphael 8404 (Most Expensive)
5. Da Vinci Meastro
6. Isabey

Why Camel Milk Is So Expensive | So Expensive

Camel milk can cost you $30 per liter. Compare that to cow's milk, and it’s almost 30 times the price.

The Ultimate Guide To Ultralight Plein Air Art Hiking

Am I the Hiking Bob Ross? More Alwyn Crawshaw please! Black! Black! BLACK!!!

A different sort of video - as requested an extended video from my recent trip to the South Downs Way, with extended art sequences and also a video on what plein air art gear I take with me on these trips - for indeed, that's the reason I do these art hiking trips after all!

Yes I lug all of this stuff with me on hikes, but like my ultralight hiking gear I've been whittling down what I use to create my work, which has been a much harder process. Also a few tips on how to create reusable and dual use things and gear for art hikes - even if you're just a normal plein air artist not a crazy extreme watercolourist like me, perched on cliffs, snow and cold hills!

I demonstrate the gear with two watercolour landscape plein air pieces - and unlike the hiking version, explain in voiceover what I was trying to do, and my creative process with each work with some DVD style commentary - which is additional to the faster sequences in the main video - so it's worth a rewatch since I slowed the timelapses down this time.

The full South Downs Way video where this was filmed:

Gear mentioned/used:

NOTE - a lot of my gear I got fairly cheaply pre-pandemic, pre-sanctions....nowadays sable and Japanese imports have shot up in price because of Brexit VAT/Import duty or war. So these aren't all exactly 'budget' anymore...like the sable brushes I use - £20-30 in 2019 and 2020. Now £60-100! But you get what you pay for when it comes to paper, paint and brushes, although there are some cheaper options I use as well, or that I suggest - like the Hero 395 pens are currently 75p over at Aliexpress!

And unlike the hiking gear where I can get by with budget chinese gear, in my experience that's a false economy with most art gear. But like anything, you use what you can afford. That said, if I ever lose my sable brush and finish my stack of Fabriano paper, I'll likely not replace them at current prices and go for the cheaper synthetic/less cotton options.

Wood 15 Grid palette with clip cheaper over at eBay or Aliexpress
Helix Neon Jumbo Pencil Case
Frank Herring Compact Palette
Platinum Preppy pens
Kuretake DT-140 brush pen - yes pre-Brexit it was cheaper and easier to get Japanese pens, it's a Japanese import I'm afraid so try sellers on eBay e.g.
DAM2-99 Sable replacement head -
Escoda 1214 Reserva Kolinsky Travel Brush size 8 - the version I have isn't sold anymore, and the new gold version with better sable costs nearly £100 (!) (I paid £27 in 2019) - closest is the Optimo Sable - still over £60. These brushes have gotten VERY expensive in 4 years!
Escoda Versatil - much cheaper and almost as good as the sable, I'd start here
DeAtramentis Document ink
roTring Technical Pen ink
roTring Pens - vintage, but some are still made to this day!
Faber Castell TG1 pens - vintage but still made
Pilot V-Tech V7 cartridge pen
Derwent water brush
Hero 395 pen or
Fabriano Mixed Media Sketchbook or
Daler Rowney Graduate Mixed Media pads
Daler Rowney A3 Jumbo Aquarelle Pad
Fabriano Artistico paper 300gsm
Artway Studio 35∞ Cotton paper
Poundland water bottle
Royal Talens Rembrandt Cobalt Violet watercolour tube
Winsor Professional Violet Dioxazine tube - 37ml is cheaper in bulk
Royal Talens Rembrandt Cerulean tube 20ml
Selfie Tripod

As always - I try and find the cheapest options, it's not always Amazon but affiliate links help the channel. If you find it elsewhere then please send me some of what you saved if you found it via me :-)

What It Takes To Be A Cruise Ship Performer

Aboard the world’s largest cruise ship, being a performer is not always smooth sailing. Sure, you get to travel the world, but performers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas are actually serious athletes. We went behind the scenes with the main character in the ship’s water show to see what the job is really like.
