Inside GIBRALTAR: Strange British Territory in Spain????????????????

Johnny Harris geography: I traveled to Gibraltrar, in search of Bald and Bankrupt..Gibraltar is a British overseas territory in the Iberian Peninsula that borders Spain. Its geopolitical past and present and position as one of the world's richest places is what makes it unique place worth visiting. The people don't identify as British nor Spanish, they identify as Gibraltarian.. So that begs the question.. How similar to Great Britian is it? Brexit has also been an ongoing issue the last few years. Sir George Rooke captured Gibraltar for the British during the War of the Spanish Succession, and Spain formally ceded it to Britain in 1713 with the signing of the Treaty of Ultrecht. The goal of my channel is simple yet complex: I want to document and share authentic & educational content of anything related to Adventure Travel, Geography, & Language in the Spanish-speaking world. It's kind of a loaded topic, but it allows me to never exhaust my creative outlets. The truth is, I've always been extremely passionate about what I'm doing on my channel, but I never properly documented it when I started adventuring as a younger man in my college years. I've made over 150 Youtube videos in both English and Spanish, and I have aspirations to make 1000s more. If that sounds interesting to you, join the community and follow me along the way.. What Is GIBRALTAR? ????????/????????

In this video, I wander around Gibraltar and meet the local people.

Gibraltar is a small British territory that borders southern Spain. It has belonged to Great Britain longer than the U.S. has been a country.

The locals are called llanitos and they speak a mixture of Spanish and English. This is one of the most bizarre, and yet fascinating places I've been to in a while. But the best thing? The people.

Gibraltar: Why There's Wild Monkeys, WW2 Tunnels and British Forces | BFBS

When we were in Gibraltar a few months ago, we had to visit the famous monkeys up on the Rock! Turns out though, that there's a pretty cool story behind why they're still there. In this episode, we explore a little about the history of Gibraltar - and why it's British - while going on a bit of safari to find some British monkeys (Barbary macaques). Fun fact, although they don't have tails, they are still monkeys (not apes)!

The monkey population in Gibraltar is currently increasing. There are around 300 animals living in the Upper Rock area of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, and supposedly they sometimes make forays into the town.

I’m spending five weeks living and working remotely from the stunning city of Sevilla from where I am getting out every weekend to explore the surrounding region. This time, I joined a tour and left the EU for the day to visit the strange little enclave of Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory on the southern Spanish coast, from where you can spot Morocco across the ocean and cheeky monkeys playing on the famous Rock of Gibraltar.

Why You SHOULD Visit Gibraltar!

What's it like in Gibraltar? Join me on a Tour of Gibraltar on Spain’s southern coast, a region well known for its towering rock and fascinating military history. The British Overseas Territory situated at the end of the Iberian Peninsula is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, famous for it's siege tunnels and it's monkeys (actually Barbary Macaques,) Although it covers less than 3 square miles, the strategic location of Gibraltar has made it one of the most fought over places in Europe. For centuries it has withstood political manoeuvring, sieges, battles and today, with its red call boxes, Union Jacks and high street shops, Gibraltar staunchly stands as a small pocket of England in the heart of the Mediterranean.

We start the tour in Casements Square and walk in to Gibraltar town centre towards Main Street, We the pass through Grand Casements Gates and cross the street to explore Ocean Village - The famous marina and site of many bars, restaurants and coffee shops. from there we explore the rock of Gibraltar and it's many attractions including :-

Apes' Den / Barbary Macaques - Gibraltar's wild monkeys in their natural habitat
Gibraltar Nature Reserve, Upper Rock - Gibraltar's most prominent landmark and nature reserve
Mediterranean Steps - UNESCO World Heritage Site Buffer Zone
O'Hara's Battery - Highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar
Skywalk - Glass lookout with spectacular views at the top of the Rock
St Michael's Cave - A natural cave in the heart of the Rock
Windsor Suspension Bridge - A suspension bridge - not for the faint hearted

I also check out the beaches of Gibraltar including

Camp Bay & Little Bay - A former quarry turned into a lido, and a little rocky beach by the cliffs
Catalan Bay - A picturesque village by the sea located on the east side of the Rock
Eastern Beach - Gibraltar's largest beach located adjacent to the airstrip
Sandy Bay - A secluded beach with orange sand from the Sahara

And lastly Gibraltar Airport is listed as one of the most dangerous airports in the World. Not at least because of it's only 1777m long runway, but also because of the 4-lane Winston Churchill Avenue, which is crossing the runway

Visit to Gibraltar

#Gibraltar #直布罗陀 #British #Britishoverseasterrority #Spain #英国 #西班牙 #RockofGibraltar

This is an additional condensed slideshow clip to my earlier video of my trip to to Gibraltar, British Overseas Territory and Headland, on Spain's south coast, which I showcase additional and more photos that I have taken at key attractions I have visited that I didn't do video recordings. Key reasons why video recordings were not done were due to videography restrictions, lack of time (as some attractions were only photo stops) and also low battery as the powerbanks I brought along were malfunctioning. Nevertheless, I did what I could.

From Spain, you will need to clear the passport control and enter the British passport control in order to get to the island by foot (about 100m between the two passport control units). Passport is required.

The island is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, a 426m-high limestone ridge. First settled by the Moors in the Middle Ages and later ruled by Spain, the outpost was ceded to the British in 1713. Layers of fortifications include the remains of a 14th-century Moorish Castle and the 18th century Great Siege Tunnels, which were expanded in WWII.

The views are nice and scenic. The Strait of Gibraltar, also known as the Straits of Gibraltar, is a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Gibraltar and Peninsular Spain in Europe from Morocco in Africa.

During my visit there, I visited the the lookout point, the limestone caves, and many historical and WW2 buildings and tunnels. I also saw many apes around, they are lovely (for the pics, please check out at my Tripadvisor or IG/FB posts). They mainly belong to the Barbary Apes, a type of tail-less macaque which are the only wild monkeys in Europe.

Do stay tune to more of my videos in Spain and the rest of the world as I walk-around the world!

map of Gibraltar [ United Kingdom ]

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 6.7 km2 (2.6 sq mi) and is bordered to the north by Spain. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, at the foot of which is a densely populated town area, home to over 32,000 people, primarily Gibraltarians.

In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession. The territory was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. It became an important base for the Royal Navy, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II, as it controlled the narrow entrance and exit to the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, which is only 14.3 km (8.9 mi) wide. This choke point remains strategically important, with half the world's seaborne trade passing through it Gibraltar's economy is based largely on tourism, online gambling, financial services, and bunkering.
The sovereignty of Gibraltar is a point of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations, as Spain asserts a claim to the territory.] Gibraltarians overwhelmingly rejected proposals for Spanish sovereignty in a 1967 referendum, and for shared sovereignty in a 2002 referendum. Nevertheless, Gibraltar maintains close economic and cultural links with Spain, with many Gibraltarians speaking Spanish as well as a local dialect known as Llanito.

On 31 January 2020, the UK and Gibraltar left the European Union. In December 2020, the UK and Spain agreed in principle to a basis on which the UK and the EU might negotiate terms for Gibraltar to participate in aspects of the Schengen Agreement. The name is derived from Arabic: جبل طارق, romanized: Jabal Ṭāriq, lit. 'Mount of Tariq' (named after the 8th-century Moorish military leader Tariq ibn Ziyad).] That continues to be its name in Arabic. It has also been suggested that the name is a contraction of the Arabic: جبل على الطريق jabal ʽalā aṭ-ṭarīq ('mountain on the way').[citation needed , History of Gibraltar

View of the northern face of the Moorish Castle's Tower of Homage.
Prehistory and ancient history.
Evidence of Neanderthal habitation in Gibraltar from around 50,000 years ago has been discovered at Gorham's Cave. The caves of Gibraltar continued to be used by Homo sapiens after the final extinction of the Neanderthals. Stone tools, ancient hearths and animal bones dating from around 40,000 years ago to about 5,000 years ago have been found in deposits left in Gorham's Cave.

Numerous potsherds dating from the Neolithic period have been found in Gibraltar's caves, mostly of types typical of the Almerian culture found elsewhere in Andalusia, especially around the town of Almería, from which it takes its name. There is little evidence of habitation in the Bronze Age when people had largely stopped living in caves.

During ancient times, Gibraltar was regarded by the peoples of the Mediterranean as a place of religious and symbolic importance. The Phoenicians were present for several centuries since around 950 BC, apparently using Gorham's Cave as a shrine to the genius loci, as did the Carthaginians and Romans after them. Gibraltar was known as Mons Calpe, a name perhaps of Phoenician origin. Mons Calpe was considered by the ancient Greeks and Romans as one of the Pillars of Hercules, after the Greek legend of the creation of the Strait of Gibraltar by Heracles. There is no known archaeological evidence of permanent settlements from the ancient period. They settled at the head of the bay in what is today known as the Campo (hinterland) of Gibraltar. The town of Carteia, near the location of the modern Spanish town of San Roque, was founded by the Phoenicians around 950 BC on the site of an early settlement of the native Turdetani people.

Middle Ages
After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, Gibraltar came briefly under the control of the Vandals, who crossed into Africa at the invitation of Boniface, the Count (or commander) of the territory.

The area later formed part of the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania for almost 300 years, from 414 until 711 AD.

Following a raid in 710, a predominantly Berber army under the command of Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed from North Africa in April 711 and landed somewhere in the vicinity of Gibraltar (though most likely not in the bay or at the Rock itself). Tariq's expedition led to the Islamic conquest of most of the Iberian peninsula. Mons Calpe was renamed Jabal Ṭāriq (جبل طارق), the Mount of Tariq, subsequently corrupted into Gibraltar.

In 1160 the Almohad Sultan Abd al-Mu'min ordered that a permanent settlement, including a castle, be built. It received the name of Medinat al-Fath (City of the Victory). The Tower of Homage of the Moorish Castle remains standing today.
