West England

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2016 | The quintessence of charming England is the “West Country”: quaint Cotswold villages with their fine churches, manor homes, and gastropubs; Wells, England’s smallest cathedral town; and the New Age capital of Glastonbury, with its legends of the Holy Grail and King Arthur. We'll finish by pondering the dramatic prehistoric stone circles of Stonehenge and Avebury. #england #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope

Lacock, England, a beautiful village and morning walk.

This video was filmed at dawn on 6th March 2021. England is in lockdown and people are permitted to go out for one piece of exercise a day. No travel restrictions were breached while filming this video.

An alternate version of the text below is captioned within the start of the video if you enable CC (subtitles).

Hello. I hope you enjoy this calm relaxing walking video.

This morning we are up with the lark and walking around the beautiful streets and lanes of Lacock village in Wiltshire.

The sun is rising and we start our walk on the footpath from Reybridge to Lacock. We then journey down a single-track lane towards the centre of the village. Before we arrive in the village we will pass Lacock’s flowing ford. It is quiet today but during the summer you will see children dipping their toes in the water or playing Poohsticks on the bridge.

Lacock is well known for its abbey and cloisters as well as a museum dedicated to William Fox Talbot, one of the fathers of modern photography. Lacock is mentioned in the Domesday Book and Lacock Abbey was founded in the early 13th century. Many of the houses in the village are from the 18th century or earlier.

The village has been used as a filming location for TV shows and movies such as: Pride and Prejudice, Cranford, Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts, Beauty and the Beast and The Other Boleyn Girl.

As we walk around it is early and very quiet. During our walk we pass some friendly dog walkers and a runner out catching the fresh morning air. See if you can spot the cat on the lane towards the end of the video.

As well as the flowing ford we can hear lots of waking birds calling out in appreciation of the morning sunrise. Lacock doesn’t have much passing traffic but we do see and hear the occasional car. There is a busier A-road close-by that we can sometimes hear.

We are particular fortunate this morning to have such a lovely sky and light that bounces off the lovely tones of the ancient brickwork on the buildings. If you have never been to Lacock I hope this video helps you feel a little closer to it. Please sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of this video.

10 Poorest Places in The UK

What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

A guide to the towns and villages of South West England | Visit Britain

map of South West England

South West England is one of nine official regions of England. It consists of the counties of Bristol, Cornwall (including the Isles of Scilly), Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. Large cities and towns in the region include Bristol, Bournemouth, Cheltenham, Exeter, Gloucester, Plymouth and Swindon. It is geographically the largest of the nine regions of England covering 9,200 square miles (23,800 km2), but the third-least populous, with approximately five million residents.

The region includes the West Country and much of the ancient kingdom of Wessex. It includes two entire national parks, Dartmoor and Exmoor (a small part of the New Forest is also within the region); and four World Heritage Sites: Stonehenge, the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape, the Jurassic Coast and the City of Bath. The northern part of Gloucestershire, near Chipping Campden, is as close to the Scottish border as it is to the tip of Cornwall. The region has by far the longest coastline of any English region.

Following the abolition of the South West Regional Assembly in 2008 and Government Office in 2011, South West Councils provide local government coordination in the region. Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and Bath and North East Somerset are part of the West of England Combined Authority.

The region is known for its rich folklore, including the legend of King Arthur and Glastonbury Tor, as well as its traditions and customs. Cornwall has its own language, Cornish, and some regard it as a Celtic nation. The South West is known for Cheddar cheese, which originated in the Somerset village of Cheddar; Devon cream teas, crabs, Cornish pasties, and cider. It is home to the Eden Project, Aardman Animations, the Glastonbury Festival, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, trip hop music and Cornwall's surfing beaches. The region has also been home to some of Britain's most renowned writers, including Daphne du Maurier, Agatha Christie and Enid Blyton, all of whom set many of their works here, and the South West is also the location of Thomas Hardy's Wessex, the setting for many of his best-known novels.Map Ceremonial county Shire county / unitary Districts

South West Regional Assembly

Durdle Door in Dorset is part of the Jurassic Coast, England's only natural World Heritage Site.
Although referendums had been planned on whether elected assemblies should be set up in some of the regions, none was planned in the South West. The South West Regional Assembly (SWRA) was the regional assembly for the South West region, established in 1999. It was based in Exeter and Taunton. The SWRA was a partnership of councillors from all local authorities in the region and representatives of various sectors with a role in the region's economic, social and environmental well-being. There was much opposition to the formation of the SWRA with critics saying it was an unelected unrepresentative and unaccountable quango. The Regional Assembly was wound up in May 2009, and its functions taken on by the Strategic Leaders' Board (SLB) of South West Councils. #swengland #swenglandmap #southwestenglandmap

HIGHAM: West Suffolk Parish #6 of 103

WEST SUFFOLK PARISH #6: HIGHAM

Higham – “High Enclosure”

This week in West Suffolk we’re in Higham, a peaceful, rural estate village located just to the East of Newmarket close to the A14. Its northern boundary is coincidental with the Icknield Way, and its crossed by the Ipswich to Ely railway line, upon which Higham used to have a station. The village is split into three distinct mini settlements, namely Lower Green, Middle Green and Upper Green, and bang in the middle of them all is St Stephen’s church, the work of Sir George Gilbert Scott.

The major part of the parish and its buildings are the property of the Higham Estate, acquired by the Barclay family in the early 19th century. Before they arrived, Higham was associated with Denham and the Dukes of Gloucester. The local population was few and dispersed, engaged mainly in agriculture and dairy farming with some horse breeding and poultry. The Barclay family would change that somewhat, engaging in a programme of welfare and social improvement.

Much of the population soon found themselves employed directly or indirectly by the Higham Estate who built cottages for them at Middle Green and Lower Green. They also built three not just one, but three schools. So lets have a look at what its like today. Spoiler alert though folks, its a pretty one!

Let’s go!
