Saint Helena, in the middle of the South Atlantic, has had it's share of famous visitors over the years. Napoleon was exiled here (for the second time!), Captain Cook stopped in, as did Joshua Slocum on his solo round the world voyage. And us of course!!

We stopped at Saint Helena as a mid-way break during our South Atlantic crossing and fell in love with this gorgeous island and the wonderful people known as Saints. As we sailed into the island, it looked brown and rocky. But once we got to exploring, we discovered just how green and lush it is on the inside. There were stairs to climb at Jacob's Ladder (699 of them!), sights to see, and whale sharks to swim with. If only the swell in the mooring field wasn't so bad, we might have stayed forever!

Thanks for watching!

Hidden Gems of St. Helena

It's one of the most isolated -- as well as intriguing -- places in the world. It remains a British outpost smack in the middle of nowhere, deep in the South Atlantic. And while it's difficult to get to...this is a place you definitely want to visit. Welcome to the brave...old...world of the island of St. Helena. Watch our special segment, from an upcoming edition of The Travel Detective, on PBS.

Top 10 Things to do on St Helena Island

My Top Ten Things To Do on St Helena Island

During my seven months on St Helena I have had the opportunity to explore this wonderful remote island in the South Atlantic. Only 4500 people and 1000s of miles from Brazil or Angola/Namibia. It is truly remote. The Saint people are some of the most warm and welcoming people I have ever had the pleasure or living and working with.
This is my top ten things to o on St Helena Island when you are here.

The JEWEL of the SOUTH ATLANTIC, St. Helena! - Outside Watch Vlog #24

We're back!!! We know it's been awhile since our last video but over the last couple of months we have had some big life changes (more on that in future videos) and really didn't have the time to edit. But, thats changing again and now we will be back to our regular bi-weekly videos! We still have so much amazing footage to edit and share.

In this video we finally get onshore in St Helena after a few days in quarantine and explore this unique gem of an Island. St Helena is a truly magical place with breathtaking scenery anywhere you look. We also decide to alter our sailing plans while here. Our original plan was to sail from St Helena to Angra Dos Reis in Brazil but challenging weather during the summer months had us change our minds and set our sights somewhere further north up the coast.

Napoleon's Tomb - Paris - Les Invalides

Napoleon Bonaparte is entombed in a fifteen-foot-tall red quartzite sarcophagus in the rotunda of the Royal Chapel at Les Invalides, a sprawling complex in the heart of Paris that once served as a military hospital and retirement home for France's War veterans. He was laid to rest in 1861 many years after his death in exhile on May 5, 1821 on the Island of Saint Helena.

Jamestown, St. Helena Island, South Atlantic Ocean | Part 1

St. Helena Island is one of the most remote islands located in the South Atlantic Ocean. This is my first time to travel to this part of the world and I was very excited to visit and experience what is like living in a remote island.

GoPro: Diving 100 year Old Wreck In St Helena

Gopro Diving the SS Papanui, which sank in James Bay in 1911 on her way to Australia with immigrants and a full cargo. She arrived in James Bay on fire, combustion having occurred in her coal filled holds and she sought refuge in the lee of St. Helena Island. The ship burned out and sank, but its 364 passengers and crew were rescued and looked after on the island. She is now lying in fairly shallow water and it’s easy to snorkle over her on a calm sunny day. Showing above the surface is part of her steering gear and visible below is her counter stern. Visible amidships are her four boilers, three in a row and one for’ard.

Prison Island | Noogoon | Saint Helena Island Queensland Australia

Saint Helena is located in Moreton Bay just out from Brisbane Queensland. The Cat O Nine Tails tour sets off from Manly Queensland. In the 19th century St Helena Island was a quarantine station which became one of the most profitable prisons in Queensland history. The island was used to house prisoners and staff for 65 years. Many of those involved in the 1891 Australian shearers' strike were imprisoned there along with murderers and bushrangers.

BRUCE MCNICOL, Development Direct, Mantis:
This brings us to St Helena, probably Mantis’ most challenging project to date and one of the development flagship projects. Being remotely situated 2000 nautical miles from Cape Town had its own challenges. Again drawing from the expertise of our team. We had to put in highly experienced project manager from Mantis, Graham Vass. We had a really good construction company that we had sourced from Cape Town. With a professional team pretty much being situated and located in South Africa. We didn't have much hours on the site except for the team. And a lot of that work was done by correspondence, emails, Zoom calls, which had its own challenges. However, no matter what Mantis had to continue with the project. And there was quite a lot to it. We had to develop all thirty rooms fitted out. We had to ship all components from South Africa, from Cape Town. Maurette obviously involved in the interiors, we had Sascon involved in the IT. We had to ship out kitchens, all the utensils. There was quite a lot to that project, shipping, the logistics. You know, that has its set of challenges with the Royal Mail ship RMS St Helena. Maurette, we discussed that it was quite a challenge from that point of view.

MAURETTE VAN EYSSEN, Head of Interior Design, Mantis & MI Designs
2016 was probably one of the most fascinating years because apart from the challenges, it was also the excitement. And in the back of my mind, I knew that I'd be able to see the island eventually once the stuff arrives there. So, most of the manufacturing was done in Port Elizabeth, locally. Everything was packed, crated and shipped from South Africa. We first had to get it to Cape Town, which meant that we had to track it from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. Once we got to Cape Town, obviously the containers got loaded and I think I had a total of eleven containers, plus a very small installation team consisting of myself, my husband and two assistants. And that was when the fun and the journey started when the ship sailed out of Cape Town.

Tomb of Napoleon & Military Museum - Paris, France

Napoleon Bonaparte died in 1821 in Saint Helena, where he was exiled at the time; as a result he was buried there. However, in 1840 his remains were returned to France at the request of king Louis Phillippe I, where he was given a state funeral & in 1841 was entombed in the complex known as Les Invalides, which also houses the Musée de l'Armée (Army Museum).

Amazing place to visit, to see such a grand setting for a beloved hero of France, along with the interesting army musuem, containing artifacts of all sorts from years gone by.

As is our custom, Ed did the narrations you hear, while I edited it all, etc.

St Helena: Walk to Lot

A beautiful walk to Lot on St Helena Island. Lot is one of the post box walks on the island of St Helena Island. The views down onto Sandy Bay are spectacular and it was an adventure using ropes to climb down to the base of Lot.
Highly recommend this walk if you visit to St Helena!
