Hello, fellow adventurers!
Today is day 29 and we have got to São Tomé, it is a little tropical island, actually, there's a couple of them, and they are on the west shore of Africa. They were discovered by the Portuguese, when there was no other inhabitants on them, in the fifteenth century.
Slaves were brought over for Africa to work in the sugar plantations. Later on, after sugar fell out of vogue, they put in coffee and cacao, which were much more popular to sell.
The locals here won their independence in the 1970s from the Portuguese.
The Portuguese had been in São Tomé, approximately just under 500 years. There was a lot of infrastructure built and roads, as you can imagine, with any kind of colony that you wanted to grow.
The population São Tomé and Príncipe, which is the other island, is about 190,000. They have been struggling since their independence because I think that it's pretty hard to imagine how hard it is to run a country with a small amount of people - being on a tropical island - a couple of hundred miles from Africa.
It is very expensive to bring in oil and all kinds of services and goods that are required when you were such a small island state. It becomes very expensive to run a country, provide services, and take care of your people.
We visited a rain forest and also went to a plantation that is no longer active, but they did process cacao and coffee which our exports, but there is very little tourism.
In fact, there's only about three ships a year that come to São Tomé and Príncipe and they will need to develop tour guides and the whole infrastructure to bring in tourism and the money that it can bring - so that they could create other industries for their people to have incomes and live off of.
I wish the best for all the people in São Tomé and Príncipe, that they will find solutions for their challenges in the future.
Next, we're going to Namibia and Namibia is one of the top destinations in Africa today.
A friend of ours, Dale Moses, told us to go to Sossusvlei and it isn't the desert Namibia. We have no idea what we're going to see there, but we're very excited to go.
