Marovo Lagoon in Marovo, Solomon Islands
Marovo Lagoon is the largest saltwater lagoon in the World. Located in the New Georgia Islands, surrounded by Vangunu Island and Nggatokae Island, both extinct volcanic islands. It is part of the Solomon Islands. It encompasses 700 square km and is protected by a double barrier reef system.
The word Marovo is derived from the name of the Marovo Island located in the central of the Lagoon.
The Marovo Lagoon World Heritage Area is located in the Marovo Lagoon. Sightings of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin have been confirmed in the lagoon.
Welcome to Marovo Lagoon
On New Georgia’s eastern side, Marovo Lagoon is the world’s finest double-barrier-enclosed lagoon, bordered by the large New Georgia and Vangunu Islands on one side and a double line of long barrier islands on the other. It contains hundreds of beautiful small islands, most of which are covered by coconut palms and rainforest and surrounded by coral.
Don’t expect sweeping expanses of silky sands, though. Although Marovo Lagoon boasts aquamarine water, it's not a beach-holiday destination. You come here to dive in fish soup, visit laid-back villages, picnic on deserted islands, take a lagoon tour, meet master carvers, kayak across the lagoon or take a walk through the rainforest or up awesome summits.
There are many islands in the lagoon, some of which are inhabited. The people speak the Marovo language and live mainly by subsistence agriculture and are skilled at fishing. The men from Marovo Lagoon are known to be skilled carvers, creating and designing beautiful wooded carvings made from ebony, hardwood and kerosene wood.
The lagoon is a popular destination for diving and is a tourism hub for travelers from Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the United States.
You can travel to the Lagoon from the capital city of Solomon Islands, Honiara by 1 hour on a twin otter plane or 10 hours on a weekly ferry.

Marovo Lagoon
Marovo Lagoon is the longest saltwater lagoon in the world. The two major volcanic islands of Vangunu and New Georgia bound it on its southern and western sides. The northern boundary consists of 130 kms of raised barrier reef with about 100 individual islands along its length. A smaller third volcanic island, Gatakae Island, occupies the southeastern corner. The inner lagoon also has numerous islands. With its many and complex terrestrial and marine habitats, the natural beauty and environment of Marovo Lagoon is outstanding.
Uepi Island
A classic raised barrier reef island, covered in impressive rainforest, outlined by fringing reef and sandy beach; flanked by the warm lagoon waters on one side, and the oceanic depths (6000ft/2000m) of The Slot, a deep marine abyss, on the other. Uepi Island is approximately 2.5 km long and 300 metres wide, and the whole area, aside from the resort's cultivated tropical gardens, is covered with tropical rainforest interspersed with walking tracks. Uepi Resort is the only occupier of this remote island.

In Groningen komen we toevallig terecht in de geboorteplaats van een bekende ontdekkingsreiziger, nieuwsgierig als wij zijn willen we hier alles over weten!
