I spent more than 2 weeks in Kyrgyzstan working together with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the local tourism board to show you an interesting mix of the best things to do in Kyrgyzstan from outdoor adventures and cultural insights to overwhelming food experiences.

Beside checking out the local attractions I got the chance to stay like a local in a yurt camp, went hiking with locals and horse trekking like a true nomad ;)

Even though I spent quite some time in the country I could only focus on the western part and couldn’t go as deep into the mountains as I wanted to as the infrastructure isn’t as developed yet.

- Alamuu Yurt Camp

Trekking Tian Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan 2017

July/August 2017: After spending some time in Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek, we drove to Karakol at Lake Issy-Kul. The next day jeeps brought us into the Tian Shan mountain range where we experienced an early drop-off due to a landslide that completely erased the driveway. This is where our trekking along and on the Inyltschek glacier started. After a week on the glacier and reaching Khan Tengri Basecamp (South Inyltschek) next to the Chinese Boarder, an old military helicopter flew us out of the mountains to Karkara, boardering Kazhakstan, followed by a two-days busride back to Bishkek.

Trekking in Kyrgyzstan

We completed an amazing 4-day hike in Kyrgystan's Tian Shan mountain range. Initially, we were planning on doing the 7 day Ak Su Transverse trek that goes to Ala Kul Lake, however, due to a huge storm we didn't complete the last three days.

Our journey started with a bus from Karakol to the village of Jyrgalan, we then completed 60km over four days to reach Alytn-Arashan. We stayed in one yurt camp and wild camped the rest of the way.

We saw nomads on horses, passed by yurts, goats and cows, and some beautiful snow-covered mountains.

Read here how to do his by yourself

The trek to Ala-Kul lake is one of the most famous in Kyrgyzstan and because I thought it would be a tourist trap I was almost going to skip it. I decided to go for this 3-day trek anyway and I have no regrets whatsoever.

Day 3:
After a quick stop at the 'natural' hotsprings we made our way to Ak-Suu where we took a 25 Som marshrutka (minibus) back to Karakol.

Tian Shan Gorge Trek, Kyrgyzstan

A trek from gorge to gorge in the Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan. We wild camped from the start in Juukuchak Gorge until Jety-Oguz yurt camp, then used fixed camps for the rest of the way to the end at Altyn Arashan. The trek included two high passes, Telety Pass (3800 m) and Ala-Kul Pass (3900 m) as well as Lake Ala-Kul and views of Karakol Peak. After a tour of the capital city Bishkek, our outward road trip to the start of the trek paused to see the Burana Tower and to spend some time on the shore of the beautiful Lake Issyk Kul. After the trek we had a tour of Karakol before the return road trip pausing at Cholpon-Ata to see the petroglyphs. 8 - 23/07/23.

Virgin Nature of Kyrgyzstan in 4K - Scenic Landscapes of Tien Shan Mountains - Relaxation Video

Our filmmaker Alexey Romanov went on a journey to film the amazingly beautiful country of #Kyrgyzstan. Back in 1995, this country became a landmark place for Alexey. Here in the Tien Shan there is everything: Great opportunities for trekking and mountaineering, magnificent mountains, the opportunity to forget and just enjoy the phenomenal beauty of nature at any time of the year. Kyrgyzstan is probably the richest in natural wonders country. Aleksey started this journey in May 2021 with a clear plan to visit exactly these places, presented in this 4K relaxation video. Staying in hotels for the night, from early morning until late in the evening, he spent time shooting the most stunning mountain landscapes. In Ala Archa National Park, he spent 5 days living in a tent, although frequent chilly rains with hail did not allow him to fully enjoy the magnificence of the surrounding nature. Nevertheless, just look at these shots! Breathtaking from the incredible power of the mountains! The Tien Shan Mountains located in the west of Kyrgyzstan is an incredible place! The sounds of nature that you heard in this 4K relax video were recorded by Alexey himself at the shooting location.

3 Days Trekking ALONE Through the Mountains of KYRGYZSTAN ????????

Welcome to another Kyrgyzstan Travel Vlog, where I spend 3 days trekking alone through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. This Kyrgyzstan Vlog is the story of the craziest adventure of my entire life as I set out on a solo trek in rural Kyrgyzstan with no internet and no familiar faces to accompany me. Not far from the city of Karakol, I started my Kyrgyzstan trek in the town of Ak-Suu, located in north east Kyrgyzstan. My plan for my solo trek in Kyrgyzstan was to reach the Ala Kul Pass for incredible views of the Ala Kul Lake located 13,000 feet or 4,000 meters above sea level. I knew that this was going to be quite the adventure, but I didn’t know exactly what I was in for until it all began.

On day 1 of my trekking in Kyrgyzstan, I solo hiked ~5 hours from the town of Ak-Suu to the village of Altyn Arashan. Along the way, I was met with jaw dropping views of rivers, mountains, trees, and nature. I experienced several river crossings, some more dangerous than others, and I came across tons of cows and horses. My first day solo trekking in Kyrgyzstan to the Ala Kul Pass went really well and I arrived at my home for the night in Altyn Arashan before sundown. After a quick trip to the natural hot springs of Altyn Arashan to relax my muscles after a long day of hiking, I had the unique opportunity to eat and sleep with a nomadic family in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyzstan nomadic people live in the mountains in the summer months, sleeping in traditional yurts, and move back to the city of in the winter to escape the cold temperatures.

After a cold night in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, I set off on day 2 to summit the Ala Kul Pass for beautiful views of the Ala Kul Lake. I knew that this day would be the most challenging, summiting to 13,000 feet or 4,000 meters above sea level, but it was way more challenging than I anticipated. My solo trek on day 2 started off well, with incredible views of the Kyrgyz nature and a steady incline. However, about 4-5 hours into my solo trek on day 2, I was met with an extremely steep climb that proved to be very dangerous. To summit the Ala Kul Pass, I had to climb on my hands and knees straight up the mountain for 1-2 hours on loose gravel to reach the top. There were times during this climb that I was scared and times where I fell and feared for my life, but at the top, it was all worth it! The views from the top of the Ala Kul Pass are absolutely spectacular. The blue water of the Ala Kul Lake with the snow capped peaks in the background were stunning, and it was an image I had never seen before in my life. The struggle both mentally and physically made my summit a true story of triumph. After descending the steep mountain and returning to Altyn Arashan after a long day, I quickly ate some dinner and fell asleep to recover from the strenuous journey.

Day 3 of my solo trek through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan was a challenging one. Despite only having a 5-6 hour trek descending back to the town of Ak-Suu, the challenge of the previous day made Day 3 a difficult one. But, luckily I was surrounded by beautiful scenery and mountains of Kyrgyzstan to keep me going to the end of my trek.

My solo trek through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan was one of my favorite adventures of my entire life. It was a difficult journey, but the beauty, perseverance, and kind nomadic people I met along the way, made it an unforgettable experience!

KYRGYZSTAN- trekking in Alay, Lenin Peak base camp, Tian Shan

Our first trek starting in Sary Mogol and ending in Kojokelen is one of the best Kyrgyz treks,
which shows much of what trekking in Alay is all about: high mountains, spectacular views and, except for the locals, deserted mountains.
Along the mountain rivers you can see wide valleys covered with green meadows. You will certainly not be bored along the way. From June to August, shepherds go to the mountains,
and so you will constantly meet a lot of nice and helpful people along the way. You will see traditional yurts and tents or mud huts. As a reward for conquering the pass
Sary Mogol are glacier-fed moraine lakes and black walls of ominous rock. The trek will take you about 4 days, to overcome the Sara Mogol pass (4300 m.a.s.l.)
it's not an easy walk. We recommend going to Kyrgyzstan in July-August, otherwise you will probably have to deal with snowfall.

We chose Tulpar lake and Pik Lenin base camp as our second stop. The compensation for the cold June weather was the views of the seven thousand peaks of the mountains,
which we had all to ourselves. By the lake, the locals were building yurts as accommodation for tourists. In turn, the first mountaineering camps were established in the base camp.

Before flying home, we visited the town of Arslanbob where we trekked for 3 days in the Tian Shan Mountains. In addition to the mountains, the largest walnut forest is also a tourist attraction
in the world. Legend has it that the first nut was given to the gardener by the Prophet Muhammad himself, who commissioned him to plant the nut and create paradise on earth.

Thanks for every support and feedback in the comments.

How To Do The Ala-Kul Trek In Kyrgyzstan | Indiahikes Deep Dive Series | Trek With Swathi

The Ala-Kul or the Ala-Kol trek in Kyrgyzstan is a grand crossover trek that takes you close to the most beautiful glacial lake we have seen outside India, the Ala-Kul. Kul or Kol in Kyrgyz means a ‘lake’, hence the name literally means the ‘Ala Lake’ trek.

This challenging trek takes you through the most beautiful coniferous forests and grasslands of the Altyn Arashan and Karakol Valleys, where the landscape is dotted with wildflowers of varying colours and gushing rivers.

As you gain altitude, the lush green valley opens up to alpine meadows sprinkled with juniper shrubs, moraine and scree. This combination of scenery is rarely seen elsewhere. It’s like a combination of our treks from Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand, where you get to walk on the green carpet of meadows lined with coniferous trees, see snow-capped mountains, witness a glacier, and camp next to a glacier-fed lake.

Two Weeks in Kyrgyzstan Mountains | Ak Suu Traverse Thruhike

In 2022 we decided to travel to Kyrgyzstan and hike one of its most demanding routes - Ak Suu Traverse. Heavy backpacks, fever, river crossings and high altitude were challenging but the views and memories in exchange are more than rewarding.

This video maps our two-weeks journey with sweet end in the waters of Isyk-Kul. Since there is not many information or footage especially from the first part of the trail available, hope this helps someone to get motivated or provides good image what to expect.

Endless valleys with no people just the gusting wind and scenic panoramas of Tian Shan mountains became really addicting.

Hiking in Kyrgyzstan adventure travel with Trekking Union

On our last day in Kyrgyzstan we decided to have a little bit of an adventure by going on a day trip hiking. Hiking in Kyrgyzstan is worldclass and a couple of weeks prior we got a bit of taste of that with some horse-trekking that really wetted our appetite for more. Hooking up with the Kyrgyzstan Trekking Union we were able to hop in a van with a bunch of other hikers to tackle Issyk-Ata Gorge. If you're in Kyrgyzstan we definitely recommend you try trekking outdoors. The scenery is breathtaking and you won't feel too crowded like in some other popular destinations in Central Asia. To arrange something with the Trekking Union check out their site:

Hiking in Kyrgyzstan adventure travel with Trekking Union Video Transcript:

Well good morning. It is Saturday here in Bishkek (Бишкéк) and it is our last day in the city so we figured why not get out of the city get close to nature. So we're going to be doing some hiking. Yeah, it is basically a day trip. We're joining like a hiking group. Yeah, the Trekking Union. Yeah, they go every week and we're just going to be doing like I think it is a pretty leisurely hike but it is going to be really scenic. I really hope so. Fingers crossed. So ending off here in Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан) on a high note hopefully. Let's go.

It is go time. We have arrived at the starting point. Today we're hiking Issyk-Ata Gorge. And now get this. We signed up for what we thought was a thirteen kilometer hike. They've just told us it is twenty five and we're going to be out all day. So I feel like this is a bit extreme. We're not that fit. We're not that prepared so it'll be interesting that is for sure. I hope we have enough water.

Status update. Status update. We've been hiking for like twenty minutes and it is getting really steep and we've lost our group because we're too slow apparently.

So two funny things. We had to sign a waiver in order to join this trek and there were two particular points that kind of jumped out at us. First, we had to agree that we wouldn't run away during the hike but it is like. You know how much we like to do that so. That was almost a sticking point. Where are we going to run?

And number two we had to promise we wouldn't drink alcohol. Haha. But again alcohol on a twenty five kilometer hike. I feel like that is just asking for trouble and we barely have enough water so. In other words we have to dump out the moonshine that is in my backpack, right? Ha.

Time for a status update. So we've been hiking for a while and the weather really changed on us quickly. It started raining, the winds started coming and this is a really fast hiking group so we've really had to pick up the pace so we haven't had many updates but we're taking a little break here and the group is way ahead of us but we don't care at this point.

So as far as hiking in Kyrgyzstan is concerned it is amazing. It is like world class. You have all of this rugged scenery and there is not a lot of people hiking here so it is an amazing opportunity for anyone who is looking for kind of an off-the-beaten-path type of destination.

So we're actually going to start heading back now for two reasons. First of all the weather is changing rapidly and it looks like it is going to start raining. Yeah, and we've also lost our group. Yeah, they disappeared. We were a little bit slow-pokey because we were taking photos and we just got left behind and now it is time for us I think we need to head back so yeah there is a few other straddlers. Like four of us who are slowly making our way back to the van trying to retrace our steps. So I think that is it for today's outing. Overall, a really good day of hiking. Tata.

Trekking in Kyrgyzstan is an amazingly beautiful experience. In the start of my 8-day trek out of Karakol, we pass through the Almalu Valley and summit four passes in three days!

We see nomads on horses, pass by yurts, goats on the trail, and some beautiful snow-covered mountains.

This trek goes through Kyrgyzstan's Tian Shan Mountains and passes by the famous Ala Kul lake. In days 1-4, we make our way there passing several valleys with horses, goats, and sheep.

Travel in the mountains. Trekking to Lake Sary Chelek (Western Tien Shan, Kyrgyzstan), June 2015

Our company organised a hike (informative walking tour) to high-altitude Lake Sary Chelek for 11 representatives of different tourism agencies from Brazil, Spain, Great Britain, Chile and Russia, who, together with our united team, had a nice time of it in the country of turquoise lakes, deep gorges and picturesque mountain passes, away from the civilization, in the very heart of the Sary Chelek Nature Reserve.

The expedition participants enjoyed the beauty of primeval nature, admired the simplicity of the local people’s life, participated in various master classes and partook of oriental food prepared by our professional cooks, while our team ensured a stable functioning of the camps.

Simple but filled with fairytale landscapes and bright impressions, a mountain tour like this is the best version of a team building event! Activities in the mountains tend to reveal a person’s potential completely, while difficulties and joys that people experience together make them naturally closer!

Trekking in Kyrgyzstan is so gorgeous, plus it's not that crowded! In the second part of my 8-day trek out of Karakol, we summit the toughest pass yet and finally see the famous Ala Kul lake, which is framed by glaciers and is the color of the sky.

We also descend into Karakol National Park, find a little bar hidden in a forest, and make some friends with the 'locals'.

This trek goes through Kyrgyzstan's Tian Shan Mountains in Central Asia and passes by the famous Ala Kul lake. In days 5-8, we finally see the lake, fly the drone over it, and finish the trek over the next couple of days.
