The capital Chisinau has been in existence for over 600 years, but was almost completely destroyed during WWII. The architecture you see today was mostly built in the Soviet-era. Along with numerous wineries, the city also boasts a lively nightlife. The city’s highlights include Parcul Catedralei and the National Museum of Ethnography & Natural History, which focuses on Moldovan culture. About 15km from Chisinau is Cricova – one of the largest wine cellars in Europe with an underground winery. It is a popular day trip from Chisinau, where you can discover interesting facts about the history of Moldova’s wine culture. Orheiul Vechi (also known as Old Orhei) known for its Cave Monastery and archaeological complex which includes ruins from over 2000 years is another popular day trip from the capital.
Bendery (also known as Bender), is a riverside city and known for the Bendery fortress with its walkable ramparts and a few museums. The Ottoman fortress dates back to the 16th-century and is one of the most well-preserved monuments in Moldova. In northern Moldova, you will find the beautiful 15th-century Soroca Fortress, with its chain of bastions.
If you have heard of Moldova, it was probably because of its fine wine. Being a hidden European nation, Moldova offers a more natural and laid back vibe than its more popular neighbours. However, it is one of the least expensive European destinations, and this has sparked an interest among globetrotters to explore the charm of this tiny nation.

TV reports had been beamed back home to the UK just a day before portraying a city of unrest and protest, so what would it be like as I step out onto the streets? Join me!

Moldova | Best Wineries and Tourist Attractions | 4K
The world is finally waking up to the charms of this little nation wedged between Romania and Ukraine. Moldova was famously dubbed the world's least happy place in a bestselling book in 2008, but today it's better known for its unspoiled countryside and superb wine tours. As one of Europe’s least visited countries, Moldova retains a measure of roads-less-travelled charm. But that’s changing quickly as budget flights from Western Europe take off.
Pretty much all roads in Moldova lead to its wine-and-food loving capital. While the city’s origins date back six centuries to 1420, much of Chişinău was levelled in WWII and a tragic earthquake that struck in 1940. The Soviets rebuilt it into what you see today: grandiose Stalinist architecture mixed with gloriously brutal modernism from the later Soviet period and a smattering of pre-WWII edifices.
Chişinău is a city of parks where retirees play chess in the shade of old-growth trees, of street festivals, and of sidewalk cafes where you can have a beverage and watch the world go by. A dozen superb wineries are within a 90-minute drive of Chişinău, and the super-central location puts the entire country within a day trip. Throw in a hip and happening nightlife, and Chisinau ticks off all the boxes for an effective weekend break.

Chisinau Drone Flight: Chișinău is the capital of Eastern Europes Republic of Moldova. Amid blocks of Soviet-style architecture are landmarks including the neoclassical Nativity Cathedral. The dome-topped church anchors Chișinăus Cathedral Park, a plaza with a Triumphal Arch celebrating Russias 19th-century victory over the Ottoman Empire. Stephen the Great Central Park is named for a Moldovan prince who resisted Ottoman rule. Another park features an artificial lake, Valea Morilor, surrounded by lush foliage and walking paths. Archaeological artifacts, war relics and photographs documenting the countrys past are displayed at the National Museum of History of Moldova. The grounds of the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History include a Victorian-era botanical garden. A collection of European art, focused on Moldavian works, can be found at the National Art Museum of Moldova. High-end fashion boutiques are concentrated on Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard in the city center, where most attractions are clustered. // Moldova, an Eastern European country and former Soviet republic, has varied terrain including forests, rocky hills and vineyards. Its wine regions include Nistreana, known for reds, and Codru, home to some of the worlds largest cellars.
