Top things to see & do in SARAJEVO, Bosnia & Herzegovina!!

Join us as we continue our Balkans road trip and explore the beautiful city of Sarajevo!

The first stop on our road trip was the small town of Jablanica. This small town is well known for its roasted lamb and we were recommended to stop there by a few locals. This town is also home to a Unesco site, the Bridge on the Neretva. This bridge is dedicated to a famous WW2 battle and definitely worth a stop!

We continued on and made it to Sarajevo. Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On our first day exploring the city we drove up Mount Trebivic, visited an abandoned bob sled track from the 1984 Olympics, and an old observatory tower. Afterwards, we headed back down into town to do a walking tour of the city.

Sarajevo offers several free walking tours of the city. We choose the walking tour called “War scars & new times. This war tour covers many important sights like Sniper Alley, Sarajevo Roses, The Children Memorial, and Markale Market. We were so impressed by this tour and would recommend it when visiting the city. You can find the link to this tour here :

We spent our last day in Sarajevo walking the old town, trying Bosnian coffee, and visiting the eclectic bar called Zlatna Ribica.

Why You Should Visit SARAJEVO Bosnia - Things To Do In Sarajevo

Why You Should Visit SARAJEVO Bosnia - Things To Do In Sarajevo. I’m Rok and I’ve spent last 8 years travelling around Europe as a tour guide. I want to show you Things To do in Sarajevo. This is The City of 1984 Winter Olympic Games and the longest besieged capital in the history of modern warfare. Sarajevo attractions are result of melting pot of east and west. This Sarajevo travel guide will show you things to do and what to see in Sarajevo.

Assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo started world war 1. Capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina is charming and amazing place where east meets west. Despite the Bosnian war in the 1990s you can still see churches of four different religions on the same street. Sarajevo still remains a melting pot of different religions, of past and modern and it is one of the most interesting cities on the Balkans you can visit.

Sarajevo (Bosnia) ⭐Top 13 things to see/do/eat in 2 days [2019] ????????

History, culture, gastronomy... Sarajevo is one of the most interesting cities in the Balkans/Europe, with so much to see and do. Discover the best way you can spend 2 days in Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital city, with 13 of the top things to see/do/eat in Sarajevo through my travel vlog.

Sarajevo (and Bosnia & Herzegovina) is not the easiest of places to really get to grips with, and not the most comfortable. But it has a remarkable, if rather dark, history and the people are extremely friendly and hospitable. Definitely a fascinating country to visit.

Top 13 things to do in Sarajevo:
1) Funky Tours FREE Walking Tour: Get your bearings and enjoy true Bosnian hospitality
2) Baščaršija (Old Town/Bazaar): Visit Kazandžiluk (Coppersmiths) Street
3) Bosnian Burek / Pita: Flaky filo pastry stuffed with meat, cheese, spinach, etc
4) Bosnian Ćevapi: Traditional mini grilled minced meat kebabs with flatbread and onions
5) Sarajevsko Beer: Drink it at the Pivnica HS traditional tavern right next to the brewery
6) Bosnian coffee: Similar but different to Turkish coffee. Get your caffeine and sugar hit
7) Tunnel of Hope Museum: Learn about the Siege of Sarajevo, see how people survived
8) Yellow Bastion / Fortress: Best sunset viewpoint and panoramic view of Sarajevo
9) Galerija 11/07/95: Understand the Srebenica genocide
10) Latin Bridge: Stand in the place where World War I started
11) Mount Trebević Cable Car (Sarajevska žičara): Ride up the famous mountain
12) Abandoned Olympic Bobsled & Luge Track: Insta photo worthy but also horrific history
13) Bistrik Tower Urban Exploration (Urbex): Near the bottom of the bobsled track

Highly recommended tours by Sarajevo Funky Tours ( especially the Free Walking Tour. Thanks to my guides Adnan and Damir. Note: I was not sponsored for these tours and paid full price as any member of the public.

Sarajevo's a city that we guarantee you'll fall in love with. From the Old Town, to the stories of resilience, to the FOOD - this city will leave such a lasting impression on anyone who visits. Come along as we explore the best things to do in Sarajevo!

We started off by grabbing some traditional Bosnian coffee at a really cool place called Ministry of Ćejf. This small little shop in Old Town has a really cool look/feel to it. Although it was a bit different from what we're used to, make sure to try it when visiting Sarajevo!

Next up was a stop in Baščaršija. This is considered the cultural & historical center of the city and dates back to the 15th century. You’ll find all kinds of shops, tea houses, and restaurants. At the center is is Sebilj Fountain, a pseudo-Moorish fountain that’s one of the city’s most recognizable symbols. It attracts people as well as pigeons, which is why it’s often referred to as Pigeon Square.
3. Visit the Latin Bridge/Museum of Sarajevo
After walking through the bazaar we headed over toward the Latin Bridge to the Museum of Sarajevo. This museum has a very notable location as it sits on the corner where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914. This event is widely considered as the moment that lead tensions toward the beginning of WWI in Europe.

Next up were two museums centered around the Bosnia War in the 90s. The first is the Museum of Crimes against Humanity & Genocide. This museum displays the personal belongings of victims while exploring the darker history of the Bosnian War. The second museum we visited was the Gallery 11/07/95. This museum highlights the Srebrenica genocide. This genocide took place in and around the town of Srebrenica in July of 1995 where over 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were killed. These are extremely sad & sobering museums and exhibits, but they’re vital to fully understand the strength and resolve of the people in Bosnia.

In the same square as Gallery 11/07/95 is the catholic Neo-gothic church Sacred Heart Cathedral. Completed in 1887, it was damaged in the Siege of Sarajevo, but not completely destroyed. This is the largest cathedral in Bosnia & Herzegovina & is positioned right in the center of Old Town.

Sarajevo's got a huge muslim community & the city is dotted with stunning mosques. Gazi Huzrev-beg Mosque, or Bey’s Mosque, is a 16th century Ottoman mosque in Old Town and is the largest mosque in the country. Although it suffered significant damage during the war, it’s been reconstructed and is seen as the most important architectural monument from the time of Ottoman rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

One other really interesting building close by is Sarajevo City Hall, or Vijećnica. This building dates back to 1896, when Bosnia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was built in a pseudo-Moorish style is a tribute to the Muslim heritage here in the city. It’s functioned as a city hall, a Parliament House, and during the communist period, a library. At the time the library contained over 1.2 million books, but only 10-15% of the books were saved from the Siege of Sarajevo.

Bosnia REALLY knows how to cook, & you can't find much better food than at Klopa. We absolutely LOVED this restaurant and highly recommend it!

Vječna Vatra is the eternal flame of Sarajevo, and is such a perfect symbol of the spirit of the people here. It's an excellent reminder that no matter what the people of Sarajevo have gone through, they're an extraordinarily resilient people who remember their history in order to never repeat it.

We can't say enough how much we loved Sarajevo. We hope this helps you in case you ever visit, we know we will again! Thanks so much for watching & see you in a couple of days!

What to See & Eat in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

???? WATCH: The Best of Athens
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

In this episode David takes us to the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina to discover Sarajevo’s sights, sounds, and tastes. Sarajevo is a bustling capital with several historical, cultural and gastronomic stops to experience.

David starts off in the city center where he meets up with his local guide Raza to begin the tour. The best place to start is the Eternal Flame, located in the city center. It has burned continuously since 1946 except during the Bosnian War 1992-1995. It is on display for everyone to see.

David and Raza then take a walk along Ferhadija, Sarajevo’s main pedestrian street that links the two different parts of the city – the 19th century buildings dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Medieval district dating back to Ottoman occupation. In the mix there are also several communist-era buildings when Bosnia existed as a republic in the Social Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Yugoslavia, for short).

At the point when Ferhadija Street meets the Ottoman quarter, there is line on the floor that shows the split. All along Ferhadija Street there are shops, restaurants, cafés, and banks. It is also where the Eternal Flame is located.

Before Raza and David head into Bascarsija (Ottoman district), they make a quick stop at the square of the Sacred Heart Cathedral. In Bascarsija they visit the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, which was built 1530. Afterwards, Raza shows David the different ways to drink a traditional Bosnian coffee at a local Kafana. After fueling up, David stops by Sebilj fountain to have a sip of water. Legend has it that anyone who drinks from the fountain will return to Sarajevo, so we’ll see if David makes his way back one day to experience more of what to see and eat in Sarajevo!

Now time for a little souvenir shopping down Coppersmith Street. Raza shows David the most typical gift one could buy here – a copper coffee pot used to serve Bosnian coffee. All this walking around made them work up quite an appetite, so they head to a bakery to try some delicious pies (cheese, spinach, and meat). The pies are baked over a coal oven and are the perfect fast food. They are also very inexpensive.

Next thing David tries is cevapi (pronounced che-vap-ee), which is pretty much the unofficial national dish of the country. Day 2 takes David and Raza to see the city from a magnificent lookout point, Zuta Tabija, or “yellow fortress.” David recommends driving or taking a taxi there because the climb to the top is quite steep. From here you can see the center of the city and the rolling green hills in the background (in case you didn’t know, Bosnia is one of Europe’s most lush and verdant countries).

After quickly seeing Emperor’s Mosque, Raza takes David to see the exact spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie, were assassinated on June 28, 1914. At the time David visited (2014) it was the 100th year anniversary of their untimely deaths. The assassination triggered the start of the First World War. After revisiting such a pivotal point in European history, David gets curious to see where all the bread he’s been eating comes from so Raza takes him to a nearby bakery, Pekara Alifakovac. They specialize in Somun bread, which is what is served with cevapi. This family-owned bakery churns out hundreds of Somun breads each day, and they have a pick-up window for customers on the go. It’s very hot inside but the experience was well worth it, especially since they allowed David to eat a piece of freshly baked bread.

Last but not least, David heads outside of the city center to visit one of the most culturally significant places in Bosnia, the Sarajevo Tunnel or Tunnel of Hope. Visitors can now see a portion of a tunnel that allowed Bosnians to smuggle in weapons and supplies during the Siege of Sarajevo (May 1992 through November 1995).

And there you have it, a brief intro about what to see and eat in Sarajevo. We hoped you liked it!

Even though the scars of the past are still visible all over the city this is now a place where different cultures and religions are living together peacefully. Churches, mosques and synagogues can be found almost next to each other which is why Sarajevo is often called “European Jerusalem”.

One of our favorite Things to do in Sarajevo was walking around the beautiful old town. We recommend trying the local food, checking out the works of the craftsmen and drinking a typical bosnian coffee.

More info on all spots can be found within the Sarajevo Travel Guide:

Sarajevo Bosnia ???????? Top Things To See & Do in the Jerusalem of Europe | 197 Countries, 3 Kids

Join us as we visit Sarajevo - the capital and cultural center of Bosnia and Herzegovina with a rich history and beautiful landscapes.

Lying along the Miljacka River and surrounded by the Dinaric Alps, Sarajevo is known as the “Jerusalem of Europe” for its religious diversity. This scenic city has a long and rich history of religious and cultural diversity with Muslims, Orthodox Christians, Catholics and Jews coexisting peacefully for centuries.

We really enjoyed exploring the Old Town (Baščaršija) with its cobbled streets, mosques, iconic fountain, and Oriental style shops. It will take you back to the Ottoman times in the 15th century and you could easily mistake it for Istanbul! The legends said that if you drink water from their fountain, you will come back again to Sarajevo! So, we drank the water and hope to return one day soon :-)

For Lunch, we enjoyed a meal at the restaurant called Brasserie August Braun. It was named after the Austrian emperor August Braun who visited here in 1800 and built a palace for his wife Maria. The neighbourhood is still called Marijin Dvor.

Sarajevo is a beautiful city with lots of indoor and outdoor activities. Featuring a friendly and multicultural atmosphere, Sarajevo also played an important part in world history.

We visited an iconic Latin Bridge where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, triggering the first World War. The city also has multiple museums dedicated to the war and history of the nation.

Outside the city, Sarajevo has many outdoor attractions, including the Trebević mountain, hiking trails along the surrounding hills with spectacular view of the city, footpaths through the peaceful Vrelo Bosne park, multiple ski resorts, and more!
