RIO CARNIVAL! EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Rio Carnival, held in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, is one of the most famous cultural events in the world. The festival typically takes place in February or March and lasts for several days, leading up to the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. The origins of the carnival date back to the 18th century, when Portuguese immigrants brought the tradition of holding masquerade balls and street parties to Brazil.

Today, Rio Carnival attracts millions of visitors each year from all over the world. The festival is renowned for its colorful parades, music, dancing, and elaborate costumes. Each year, samba schools in Rio de Janeiro spend months preparing for the carnival, creating their own themes, costumes, and dance routines. The parade takes place in the Sambadrome, a large stadium built specifically for the event, where the samba schools compete with each other for the top prize.

Rio Carnival is not just a celebration of music and dance, but also a time for social and political commentary. Many of the parades floats and costumes feature satirical representations of current events or political figures. In addition to the main parade, there are also numerous street parties and blocos, which are impromptu parades that take place throughout the city.

The energy and vibrancy of Rio Carnival are truly unforgettable. The festival is a celebration of Brazil's unique culture and heritage, and it represents an opportunity for people from all over the world to come together and experience the joy and spirit of the Brazilian people.

Here are some interesting facts you probably didn’t know about Carnaval. Number 8 is my favorite.
Every year Brazil’s Carnaval brings millions of people to this incredible festival full of parades, culture, excitement, public street parties and celebrations. Carnaval is the biggest week long party in the world. Video 113
1. Rio De Janeiro’s Carnival is registered in the Guiness Book as the biggest carnival in the world.
2. In Brazilian Portuguese, it’s written as ‘Carnaval’ but for the majority of the rest of the world, it’s written as ‘Carnival’; and both are correct!
3. In Salvador alone, estimations state that approximately 2.5 million people participate in the festivities every year (1.5 million being tourists). This festival has a large positive impact on Salvador’s local economy.
4. Salvador is the “the biggest African city outside Africa” with 83% of the people claiming black ancestry. The difference between Carnaval in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro is that Salvador is an incredibly vibrant public street party with huge blocos and cultural events. While Rio’s main event is the parade in the Sambadromo where spectators watch elaborate floats.
5.In Rio’s Sambodromo, the Samba schools are judged on their elaborate floats, costumes, dancing and music. This is a very important competition and some schools spend over 4 million dollars on outfits and preparations.
6.The Carnaval in Brazil is always held 40 days before Easter, ending at noon on Ash Wednesday.
7. There are more than 2 million people on the streets every day during the carnaval.
8. Brazilian Samba derived from a mixture of African and European influences. Brazilian Samba is one the most popular dances in South America. The dance has evolved over time to become a cultural identity for Brazilians. And I recommend you try it. Don’t worry if you can’t samba; just move your feet, have fun and smile. Brazilians want you to enjoy their culture so don’t be shy.
9. Carnaval is celebrated all over Brazil in their own unique ways. But the biggest celebrations are held in Rio, Sao Paulo, Salvador, Recife, Olinda and Manaus.
10. The word Carnaval is represented as the last period of feasting and celebration before the strict spiritual period of Lent. So, all that dancing, parading and fun is really just to say goodbye to steak dinners for a while.
Carnival is a chance to let people set aside their everyday lives, adorn themselves with costumes, masks and allow themselves to experience an amplified sense of social unity, art, music, and excitement. We are an American family living in Salvador, Brazil. I know from experience that Brazilians want to share their culture and beauty with you. So put Brazil’s Carnival on your bucket list and make it a priority to come and experience the world’s biggest party.

This is Pelourinho, the historical district in Salvador. This is my favorite place to go for Carnaval and to take visiting family or friends during other times of the year. It tops the charts for one of the best afro Brazilian cultural experiences. It’s also the most unique, vibrant, colorful, celebration and is great for families and kids. I highly recommend it.

How the Favelas shaped Samba and Carnival in Brazil

In the city of Rio De Janeiro, around 23-24% of the population live in the Favelas and within these makeshift neighbourhoods, is where the origins of Samba lies. Despite the dangerous environment it somehow gave the country of Brazil it’s most recognisable sound and shaped the biggest carnival in the world.

About Rio de Janeiro: Rio de Janeiro, or simply Rio, is the second-most populous city in Brazil and the sixth-most populous in the Americas. Rio de Janeiro is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazils third-most populous state, after São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Part of the city has been designated as a World Heritage Site, named Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea, by UNESCO on 1 July 2012 as a Cultural Landscape. Founded in 1565 by the Portuguese, the city was initially the seat of the Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro, a domain of the Portuguese Empire. Later, in 1763, it became the capital of the State of Brazil, a state of the Portuguese Empire. In 1808, when the Portuguese Royal Court transferred itself from Portugal to Brazil, Rio de Janeiro became the chosen seat of the court of Queen Maria I of Portugal, who subsequently, in 1815, under the leadership of her son, the prince regent, and future King João VI of Portugal, raised Brazil to the dignity of a kingdom, within the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and Algarves. Rio stayed the capital of the pluricontinental Lusitanian monarchy until 1822, when the War of Brazilian Independence began. This is one of the few instances in history... Rio de Janeiro subsequently served as the capital of the independent monarchy, the Empire of Brazil, until 1889, and then the capital of a republican Brazil until 1960 when the capital was transferred to Brasília. My Experience at the Amazing Rio Carnival - Brazil Travel

My Experience of the Amazing Rio Carnival - What Happens During Carnival in Rio | Brazil Travel ????????

The Rio Carnival in Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese: Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro) is a festival held every year before Lent; it is considered the biggest carnival in the world, with two million people per day on the streets. The first Carnival festival in Rio occurred in 1723.

Rio Carnival is meant to celebrate the beginning of Catholic Lent; it's perhaps most well-known for being an incredible spectacle of samba dancing, live music in the streets, world-class parades, colorful costumes, and vibrant revelry.

Rio Carnival takes place in February or March (depending on the calendar), which is also the middle of summer in Brazil. Bring on the heat and humidity! It encompasses elaborate costumes filled with extravagant feathers, sequins, and glitter. Parades are the main event of the Rio Carnival festivities. The energetic, colorful parades consist of floats, dancing, and elaborate costumes.

The Carnival festival happens over a few days, usually just before Lent, in February or March. Because traditionally, many people go on a fast during Lent, giving up meat, sugar, or other foods and drink, the carnival is an opportunity to enjoy these treats for the last time.

Benefits of Carnival - Social benefits - self-esteem; social integration; leadership skill development; physical health and healthy habits; education and learning; volunteerism and community spirit; dedication; spread of the carnival work ethic.

Sambadrome is the name given to an exhibition place for the Samba schools parades during Carnaval in Brazil. A sambadrome generally consists of tiered spectator viewing areas surrounding a long alley for the schools to parade down.

Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí is a concrete-built stadium located in the City of Rio de Janeiro, specially constructed and designed to host the annual parade of Samba Schools during Rio's Carnival. Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí's first appearance in Rio was right after when Linda, who has been looking for the missing Blu and Jewel with Tulio, accidentally wandered into and got into the back of one of the Carnival's float trucks and lifted up on the upper platform as the truck approached the alleyway. Finding herself in a wrong position, Linda (helped by Tulio) desperately tried to get out of the situation and continue with her search for the two missing Spix's Macaw. At the same time, Blu, Luiz, Rafael, Nico, and Pedro had arrived at the Carnival, chasing after Jewel who was kidnapped by Nigel and caged inside the Smugglers's float. Sliding on one of the dancers' skateboard, Blu finally caught up with the smuggler's truck and went inside, hoping to rescue Jewel, but eventually obstructed and got himself locked up in a cage by Nigel. Linda and Tulio, who finally broke free from the parade and the crowd, luckily spotted Fernando on the truck and went right after the smugglers. When the smuggler's truck was about to leave Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí, Linda - realizing the impossibility of running after the truck - stole one of the unboarded float truck and told Tulio to get aboard, driving after Blu and Jewel until they reached the airport.
