The municipality includes several villages: Kleine Scheidegg (1,600 m), First (1,420 m) and Grindelwaldgletscher (2,440 m). Grindelwald includes plenty of excursions such as the first cliff walk Gindelwald.
The village lies about one kilometre from Interlaken on the other side of Lake Brienz. In summer it offers walks up to three different glacier-fed lakes with swimming possibilities as well as hiking trails which lead around mountains such as Gross Wannenhorn and Lauteraarhorn. A cog railway leads from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg and the Schynige Platte, a prominent saddle between the mountains of Jungfrau, Aletsch Glacier and Schwalhorn. Grindelwald is also popular in winter for skiing and other snow sports.
The name Grindelwald was first mentioned in records dating from 1294, but it is suspected that there was a settlement in the area from the late Roman age, when the eastern border of Switzerland was about 200 metres higher than today.
Whilst having a typical alpine town size and layout, Grindelwald's history is closely linked to its valley floor counterpart - Interlaken. In 1800 it actually became part of Interlaken itself until 1809 when it returned to being its own municipality.
