Snorkeling the PRISTINE waters of Hurricane Hole on St. John, USVI (Mangroves and Sea Turtles!)

Explore the Ocean With Us!
Hi! We’re Andrew and Laura – two professional scuba divers, sailors, outdoor enthusiasts, and ocean adventurers. Join us as we share wild stories, ocean views, and useful tips with you from under (and above) the sea!

With so many picturesque beaches, snorkeling is one of the favorite pastimes on St. John in the US Virgin Islands. Departing from shore, the white sand quickly tapers into beautiful coral reefs booming with life while green sea turtles graze in the seagrass beds nearby. What's not to love about that?

Well, I'm here to tell you about my favorite snorkel site on St. John that's NOT one of those white sand beaches. In fact, it's not a beach at all. Rather a forest. A mangrove forest, to be exact!

Hidden on the East End of St. John is Hurricane Hole - a series of small bays lined with mangroves. It's the best snorkeling spot on the island and one of the coolest places to visit in the US Virgin Islands.

If snorkeling isn't your thing, Hurricane Hole still provides an immense amount of beautiful scenery for boaters, kayakers, and paddleboarders. So even if you're not snorkeling, I recommend visiting!

As the name would suggest, it's a popular anchorage for sailors as they hole up in the face of hurricanes. Between the surrounding mountains and the strong root system of mangroves, the natural landscape provides the best fortification in the Virgin Islands for mariners come hurricane season.

Hurricane Hole's collection of bays and creeks consists of:
- Popilleau Bay
- Borck Creek
- Whitesand Bay
- Princess Bay
- Otter Creek
- Water Creek
- Nathaniel Bay

Towards the end of the video, we visited Lime Out VI - a floating taco stand in Coral Harbour. Before ending the day snorkeling with a green sea turtle at Hansen Bay Beach! If you haven't done a similar trip, I highly recommend you do it!

St John US Virgin Islands Travel Guide

In this St John Travel guide we explore the beaches and the countryside. We arrive on a ferry from Red Hook on St Thomas island in Cruz Bay. There are three main US Virgin Islands including St Croix, St John, St Thomas. Each island has a different feel to it.

Snorkeling Maho Bay Beach with Sea Turtles (St. Thomas to St. John by Boat) USVI

We took the boat from St. Thomas over to St. John to do some snorkeling at Maho Bay Beach. This is probably the best spot to see turtles in St. John. We saw at least 4 turtles on this day. You can also se a trunk fish in this video. I love seeing these fish when I snorkel. I'm using my new Tidal Sports snorkel which is worth paying a little extra money for. It doesn't fog up and the mouthpiece is more comfortable than my old snorkel. This keeps the muscles in your mouth and jaw from getting tired and you can stay out snorkeling longer. I hope you enjoy watching the video.

2:14 Other things to do in St Thomas
2:40 Weather

Location and How to get there
The US Virgin Islands located 40 miles east of Puerto Rico and lie between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. They consist of 4 larger Islands St Thomas, St Croix, St John, and water island. There are about 50 other smaller islands. The capital city is Charlotte Amalie which is located on the most visited island St. Thomas. Around 1.2 million people visit this island annually. St. Thomas is the most popular port of call for cruise lines with two docks for them. Also There are a number of airlines that offer direct flights from the US mainland to St Thomas and St Croix.
St John does not have an airport, however, you can easily get there from St. Thomas by short ( around 20-25 minutes) ferry ride. Also if you rent a car on St Thomas you can take a car to St. John by riding a car ferry.
There is a Seaborne seaplane that gives travelers a fast and convenient way to connect between St. Croix and St. Thomas. The flights are only 25 minutes between these 2 islands.

When to visit.
The best time to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands is April to June when you can expect mild weather and very little rainfall. The hurricane season officially lasts from June to November. The Virgin Islands lie in the main pathway of many hurricanes originating in the Atlantic ocean, so they often get hit. The peak season in the Virgin Islands runs from December to April when hotel rates are the highest.
The temperatures vary between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (21 and 32 °C), with an average of 78 °F (26 °C).
What to see
In addition to white sandy beaches and snorkeling, US Virgin Islands have a ton of other things to do.
There are many things you can do while visiting St. Thomas. You can walk and explore Charlotte Amaliya, take a historical walk at 99 steps and visit Blackbeard's castle. If you are visiting the island by cruise ship, right across from the Havensight cruise ship dock located Skyride to Paradise Point. You can take a short tram ride from the base station to 700 feet above sea level to see the spectacular views at Paradise Point. There are restaurants and shops at the top where you can relax, eat, shop, drink enjoy one of the best views in the Caribbean..
if you are traveling with kids, you should visit Coral World Ocean Park, a marine park and tourist attraction located next to Coki Beach on the East End of St. Thomas. The Park features Underwater Observatory Tower, which descends 20 feet in the ocean to allow underwater viewing. There are activities like touch pools, aquariums, watching animal feeding, and Sea Trek Helmet Dive which offers you to walk and breath underwater exploring marine life.
Park animals include sea turtles, stingrays, juvenile sharks, sea stars, conch, sea cucumbers, iguanas, sea lions and others. Many of the animals, such as the turtles, are rescued from the wild and released when possible.
The park focuses on visitor education and interaction with the animals, through touch encounters, feedings, swims, snuba, and Sea Trek.

US Virgin Islands are well known for their beaches and for a good reason. The beaches are incredible. There are a number of beaches that offer good snorkeling. You can easily spot sea turtles or stingrays by just snorkeling off the beach. According to National Geographic Magen’s Bay which is located on the northside of St. Thomas is one of the top 10 world’s best beaches in the world. This almost a mile-long beach offers amenities such as restrooms, showers, beach rentals such as chairs, kayaks, etc.
St. John is famous for its National Park and beautiful beaches. Virgin Islands National Park covers roughly 60% of the Island. Hills, valleys, and beaches are breathtaking.
If you are visiting St. Croix one of the must-do attractions is touring the rum distilleries. There are 2 world-class distilleries on the island Cruzan and Captain Morgan. For a small fee, you can take a guided tour of a rum distillery and learn the history of rum and how it’s produced, and best of all you get to enjoy tropical rum cocktails.

Conclusion
US Virgin Islands is a place that every US traveler should check out. It’s easy to access from the US, does not require a passport, and offers some of the best beaches you’ll find in the Caribbean.

ABOUT US: We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic.

The good, the bad, the ugly – and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test – one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.

Welcome to Maho Bay! The premiere spot to snorkel with sea turtles. Maho Bay is about a 20 min safari taxi ride from Cruz Bay. The road is windy and steep and I am grateful I did not rent a car. Although someday I would like to visit and rent a jeep so I could explore some remote corners of the Island.

So overall I really enjoyed Maho Bay. The beach is pretty narrow and the road is feet away from the water which is great if you need accessibility for some reason. The main attraction is the sea turtles. These turtles are huge and they have clearly been around a while. The tourists don't seem to bother them at all. In fact, I think the remora fish are more of a nuisance than the tourists.

Keep a safe distance and remember not to touch the turtles or try to ride them as they do need to come up for air on a regular basis. It was a blast getting up close and personal to these beautiful sea creates. Maho Bay is great for families and the food/bar area is a really nice bonus in case you didn't pack a lunch.

Welcome to our home in the US Virgin Islands! One of our favorite things to do is go out and snorkel at whatever bay we happen to be exploring that day.

On this particular day, we visited Salt Pond Bay on the south side of St. John to enjoy a brief snorkel session! The green sea turtle I encountered was one of the friendliest and most fearless yet. Enjoy the video of him munching away at the seagrass down below!

Best beach for Sea Turtles in St. Thomas USVI (snorkeling with turtles)

If you want to go snorkeling with sea turtles while you are in St. Thomas then this is probably your best bet. We seem to find sea turtles every time we go to this beach. I think we saw at least 5 turtles on this day. My wife also saw a spotted eagle ray and we saw several types of fish. We kept on seeing big schools of fish jumping out of the water and feeding on bait fish. So I swam out to try to get them on video. At the end of the video you can see blue runners and bonita in a feeding frenzy. It was pretty cool. I will show you where the places at Brewers beach are to snorkel and what you will see in different parts of the beach. Then you can just relax and watch some cool video of us swimming around with turtles.

ST. THOMAS USVI Vacation during COVID - February 2021

This is our St. Thomas USVI Vacation in COVID February 2021. Getting into St. Thomas was smooth. We had to get rapid COVID Test, upload the results to the St. Thomas government website, and be accepted prior to boarding a plane. We handled this all in a day. We stayed at Margaritaville Resort. Not All Inclusive. In fact, more like a hotel. They charge you a “covid fee” on every ticket at the restaurants and bars is our biggest complaint, outside of a few places needed a fresh coat of paint.

Swimming with Sea Turtles in Magens Bay!

Explore the Ocean With Us!
Hi! We’re Andrew and Laura – two professional scuba divers, sailors, outdoor enthusiasts, and ocean adventurers. Join us as we share wild stories, ocean views, and useful tips with you from under (and above) the sea!

- - -

It was our first day off from establishing our life in the islands so we decided to have a beach day before Tropical Storm Grace rolled in! Thankfully, our Airbnb we're staying at is just a short hike down the hill to the beautiful Magens Bay!

It was possibly the most unforgettable beach day we've ever had. From the warm Caribbean sun, swaying palm trees and glimmering turquoise water, we were living on a postcard. What was most impressive, though, was how many sea turtles we encountered on a brief snorkel in Magens Bay!

It was incredible - we encountered at least four sea turtles within minutes. They let us get relatively close to them (although we never touched them or got TOO close) which is always a treat. The patterns on their shells are always incredibly gorgeous.

If you're looking to swim with sea turtles during your trip to Saint Thomas, USVI, we recommend just doing it right from the beach at Magens Bay! No need to pay a big tour company to bring you somewhere. Save a buck and see all the turtles on a budget!
