Mongolia's geography is characterized by great diversity.
From north to south, it can be divided into four zones: the mountain forest, the alpine steppe and in the far south the semi-desert and the desert.
The mountains and dense forests predominate central and northern Mongolia and grasslands cover large areas of this region.
The eastern part of the country is covered by vast expanses of the Asian steppe.
The steppe is blurred in the Gobi Desert, which extends into southern Mongolia from East to West.

About Mongolia: Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia. Its area is roughly equivalent with the historical territory of Outer Mongolia, which is sometimes used to refer to the current state. It is situated between Russia to the north and China to the south, where it neighbours the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Ulaanbaatar, the capital and largest city, is home to about 45% of the countrys population. It is also ranked the coldest capital city alongside Moscow, Ottawa, and Nur-Sultan. Approximately 30% of the population is nomadic or semi-nomadic; horse culture remains integral. Buddhism is the majority religion, with the nonreligious being the second-largest group. Islam is the second-largest religion, concentrated among ethnic Kazakhs. Exploring Mongolia (from the Gobi desert to Khuvsgul lake)
The landscapes of Mongolia amazed us. The steppe was a vast open plain under an endless blue sky. The Gobi dessert contained colossal sand dunes that towered over thirsty scrub-lands. Khuvsgul lake was a crystal blue eye amidst the lush forests and mountains that surrounded it. However, it was the people that made our trip unforgettable. The nomads who welcomed us into their gers were extraordinarily kind and generous. The tour guides and drivers we followed were experienced, fun and friendly. Also, we felt very lucky to be placed on tours with two amazing groups of travellers. If you hadn't thought about visiting Mongolia before, make sure you add it to your bucket list!
MONGOLIA | 4K (ULTRA HD)
► Mongolia is a country bordered by China and Russia. It is known for its large wilderness and nomadic culture. Ulaanbaatar, its capital, is centered on the place Genghis Khan, named after the illustrious founder of the Mongol Empire of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The city also includes the National Museum of Mongolia, which displays historical and ethnographic objects, and the restored monastery of Gandantegchinlin, which dates from 1830.
► This year I travelled to Mongolia for three weeks filming for a documentary focusing on the changing climate and how it is affecting the way of life for the Mongolian people. While I was there we visited some of the most incredible places I've been and had some amazing experiences, meeting the local people and getting a glimpse into their lives.

Khovsgol Lake
One of the largest lakes in the whole of Mongolia, Khövsgöl is often nicknamed ‘the younger sister,’ due to its proximity to the famous Lake Baikal that lies around 200 kilometers to its northeast in Russia. Surrounded by a glorious national park of the same name that is home to lots of towering mountains and sweeping valleys, Khövsgöl Lake is set in a stunning location.
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park
Covering a vast expanse of territory that includes everything from the Tavan Bogd massif to the glittering lakes of Dayan, Khoton, and Khurgan, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park will delight nature lovers and outdoor aficionados alike. Located in the western corner of the country, the national park is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in Mongolia. The towering Tavan Bogd Mountains loom over the three large freshwater lakes that lie among them.
Genghis Khan Statue Complex
Simply breathtaking, the gigantic statue of Genghis Khan atop his horse glimmers in the light as he imperiously looks out over all the steppe and mountains surrounding the complex. Towering to a height of 40 meters, the statue was built in 2008 to honor the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Mongol Empire. Its sheer size and scale are certainly fitting of the man who rose to rule such a huge swathe of territory and is a national hero in the country.
Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur
Meaning ‘Great White Lake’ in English, Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur is aptly named, as its reflective waters beautifully mirror the skies and clouds above. Stretching into the distance, the lake’s tranquil waters are surrounded by gently rolling hills, and the idyllic scenery is perfectly complemented by the white yurts and scatterings of horses that line its shores.

Un viaggio straordinario per chiunque voglia scoprire questa terra sconfinata che ha segnato la storia dell'umanità e che ancora oggi preserva tracce indelebili di un passato glorioso. Nonostante le distanze, grazie ad un programma studiato accuratamente e una logistica comprovata è possibile visitare gran parte dei più acclamati siti. Adatto a chi visita la Mongolia per la prima volta: la nostra è una proposta di una bella visione d'insieme.
Attraverseremo con MINI VAN e JEEP tratte stradali di buona parte delle regioni più caratteristiche della Mongolia, visiteremo importanti Parchi Naturali e siti Etno/Storici, come la valle dell'Orkhon (sito UNESCO). Con volo dall'Italia, raggiungeremo la capitale della Mongola, UlaanBaator, da dove inizierà la nostra eccitante avventura mongola. Quasi ogni giorno cambieremo località spostandoci comodamente e traguardando spettacolari scenari. Pasteggeremo in locali caratteristici e a volte saremo ospiti graditi di famiglie locali. Pernotteremo spesso in 'ger' predisposte per gli ospiti stranieri, perciò piuttosto comode con camere a noi riservate da 2-3-4 posti letto, talvolta con bagni e docce privati e arredi autentici. Sarà riservata particolare attenzione alla pulizia e ad una funzionalità che ci farà sentire a nostro agio in mezzo all'immensità. Saremo sempre in contatto con una umanità forte e gentile e una natura incontaminata . Queste caratteristiche rappresenteranno l'aspetto dominante di un viaggio che rimarrà per sempre dentro di noi.
