Gibraltar is a tiny British territory located on the southern tip of Spain just 14 km north of Morocco.
It is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar and is commonly known as, The Rock.
We took a drive down from Marbella Spain to see this iconic landmark and to enjoy a little slice of Britain in the far south of Europe. We started with a Gibraltar Street walk from Spain to cross the border into the British territory of Gibraltar.
Our first stop was the top of the rock observation deck that offered stunning panoramic views of Gibraltar. We not only saw Gibraltar, but we saw across straight of Gibraltar to Morocco in Africa and Spain’s Costa del Sol. It is truly spectacular. But the star attraction is definitely the rock of Gibraltar itself.
One of the star attractions of Gibraltar is the Ape’s Den where you’ll find a group of monkeys who have decided to call this place home at the cable car’s mid-station. But the Gibraltar monkeys are everywhere. Legend has it that as long as the macaques inhabit Gibraltar, the British will remain.
The monkeys were so important to the British, that they were placed under the armies protection and Winston Churchill even ordered more monkeys from Morocco when their numbers were on the decline. They can be very feisty though so make sure to keep your distance.
The Skywalk is a glass walking dangling 340 meters above sea level. It offers panoramic views of three countries and two continents and is said to be able to withstand the weight of 5 asian elephants.
It’s an amazing hike through the rock of Gibraltar and we followed the rocky trails from one attraction to another. Gibraltar was heavily fortified and there are plenty of ruins, guard stations and old lookouts to explore.

This video is about Lower St Michaels Cave 2014 Filmed by me using a GoPro 3+, Oct 2014.
One of the main tourist attraction are the caves, with an extensive underground system, the most interesting being St. Michael's Cave, Gorham's Cave and many other smaller caves. St. Michael's Cave are especially of great interest, with cave formations beautifully lit, forming an overwhelming experience. It is also a concert and cultural events venue in its upper part, while the lower galleries are more adventurous. Gorham's cave is a marine cave where important artifacts and fossils have been found. The upper Rock has a large system of tunnels and galleries dug during the Great Siege and the Second World War, many of them being open for visiting and extremely inciting.
Saint Michael's Cave, Gibraltar
Gibraltar is full of caves.
The Phoenicians called Gibraltar Calpe (meaning “hollow”), and the Romans expanded this to Mons Calpe or Hollow Mountain. Due to erosion of the limestone rock, there are more than 200 caves, both sea and inland caverns.
St Michael’s Cave is a massive cavern in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, most easily accessible to visitors close to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. More than 700 feet deep, it is full of stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone formations.
St Michael’s Cave was well known in classical times, but the discovery of Neanderthal artifacts and remains shows that it was in use much earlier.
Since the Moors occupied the Rock in the Middle Ages, it was used for military purposes. It became a hospital and ammunition store during the Second World War. Today a sizeable Upper Cavern natural auditorium hosts concerts and private events.

St.Michael's Cave is in fact a network of caves formed in the limestone rock over thousands of years, located in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve at a height of over 300 metres above sea level - it takes it's name from a similar grotto in Monte Gargano, Apulia, Italy where it is said the archangel Michael appeared.
In the largest of it's caves a natural auditorium has been carved out of the rock and has played host to many concerts, Breed 77 has played here and I held my Paul Isola & Friends Concert here.

Climbing into New St. Michael's Cave Gibraltar
The New St. Michael's Cave Gibraltar is an amazing experience. Go deep inside The Rock of Gibraltar and see what the inside looks like. What an incredible experience to see inside the caves at Gibraltar.
The upper caves are open for tourists who have purchased the entrance into the Upper Reserve at The Rock of Gibraltar. If you take a van tour you will more than likely get to tour the inside of St. Michael's Cave.
This tour, however, is private and has to be set up outside of the normal entrance prices. I'm not sure how that works, as I was invited to join on this particular day. And it was literally one of the best experiences of my life!
The group I was with was lots of fun, polite and helpful. We all had a blast, and I think all of us were quite surprised at just how difficult it was climbing through these caves. Overall, this was an awesome time with lots of fun and excitement throughout the 2 hour climb into St. Michael's Cave at Gibraltar.

It is a small cave compared to many of the ones we have explored, but it is still awesome to see.
