The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.

For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.
Filmed & produced in early 2023

St Helena Island - Ep. 24

The last home of Napolean and the current home of Jonathan the oldest living thing on earth! This special place isn't easy to get to, but it is worth it!!! My sources for this video are our amazing tour guide and sainthelenaisland.info. Sorry for the blank spot after the bank. I have a good photo of their currency, but something went wrong after I added the photos and uploaded the video.

Flying to St Helena Airport

This trip to the St. Helena Airport took place on 15 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. Here's a video with my thoughts on that situation:

This video is about flying to the St. Helena Airport. St. Helena Airport is one of the most challenging airports in the world. Less than ten commercial airline pilots are certified to land here!

At either end of the runway are massive cliffs, which create challenging wind conditions.

I’ve wanted to visit St. Helena for a long time. When the St. Helena Airport received its first commercial flight in 2017, the trip became far more viable for me. Before St. Helena Airport opened, a trip there required a five day boat trip just to get there.

St. Helena’s role in the Age of Exploration cannot be understated. The Portuguese used St. Helena as a secret base for restocking their ships (they left a heard of goats and planted citrus trees. It then became a key possession of the British East India Company before it was suddenly converted into a prison for the world’s most feared man – Napoleon. He died there, too. Today, it’s a fascinating British Overseas Territory accessed thanks to the St. Helena Airport.

In this video, we’ll explore the flight’s route, the passenger experience, and even peak behind the scenes at the St. Helena Airport to understand how it all works.

Here’s a link to the unedited take-off and landing footage:

Cape Town to St. Helena, Part 1 - Ep. 22

We leave Cape Town in our prop wash and head out across the Atlantic for our very first ocean crossing and it's just the two of us. See how we handle a 24 hour watch schedule with only 2 people and I tackle the worst sea sickness I have ever experienced. This is the first six days of a 13 day passage halfway across the Atlantic to St. Helena Island.

Cape Town to St. Helena Part 2 - Ep. 23

Follow as we finish up our first ocean crossing and arrive at Saint Helena Island. See what it's like to be at sea for so many days in a row and how we keep occupied so we don't go crazy. I have some bad days at sea but we still enjoy amazing sunrises and sunsets. We cross the prime meridian and find there is a dinosaur in the contour lines at the bottom of Atlantic Ocean. Learn about the mid-Atlantic ridge as we sail over it and enjoy some sights and sounds of sailing.

What To Do in St Helena

This trip to the St. Helena took place from 15 - 18 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. I do not encourage anyone to travel now. #StayHome. Here's a video with my thoughts on the current situation:

St. Helena may just be one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited. The Saints are some of the kindest people I’ve ever come across in my travels. Because I had such a great time, I thought I’d try something different for this video about St. Helena.

I normally make videos here on YouTube about airlines, but perhaps the most amazing part of aviation are the places it can take. Places like St Helena. So, in this video about St Helena, I’m trying a little experiment: Let’s check out some things on the ground in St Helena! We’ll explore some of the highlights of St. Helena and some of what I enjoyed while I was here. Let me know what you think about this experiment by leaving comments. I always appreciate feedback! And next week, I’ll post a more typical video about my return to the mainland.

St. Helena is home to epic history, out-of-this-world scenery, and incredible opportunities for intreprid travelers.

We’ll explore the infamous Jacobs Ladder, Napoleon’s two residences on St. Helena, some of the hiking available on the island, as well as some of the most amazing vistas.

This is my first attempt at a video about something unrelated to aviation, so I’d appreciate your feedback. I think it’s probably fair to say I need to expand my coverage of things like accomodations and food if I continue with this. Also, maybe I’ll do this on a separate channel. Anyway, let me know what you think of this first attempt. And, also, let me know if you’re heading to St. Helena once we can all travel again!

RMS St Helena Final Voyage - The Island Says Goodbye

Last voyage of the RMS St Helena, sailing out from Jamestown harbour on Saturday 10 February, 2018, at the end of 27 years serving as the island's lifeline to the world.
After opening its brand new airport, St Helena Island was now switching to air travel as the primary method for transporting people, so the Royal Mail Ship was no longer required.
Saying goodbye to the RMS St Helena was an emotional experience for many on St Helena as the ship had become a much-loved part of the Saint way of life.
On this February day in 2018, a flotilla of 19 small boats took to the water to bid the RMS farewell, and the Jamestown seafront was lined with hundreds of well-wishers.
For the full story of the day, complete with interviews and photographs, please visit our blog.
[update: 2021 - the ship has since been acquired by Extreme E, the electric off-road racing series, has undergone an extensive refit and now serves as their command and transportation centre]

RMS St Helena leaves the island for the final time

Saturday the 10th February 2018 was an emotional day for the people of St Helena as the ship that has served the island for the past 27 years departed the island for the final time.

The JEWEL of the SOUTH ATLANTIC, St. Helena! - Outside Watch Vlog #24

We're back!!! We know it's been awhile since our last video but over the last couple of months we have had some big life changes (more on that in future videos) and really didn't have the time to edit. But, thats changing again and now we will be back to our regular bi-weekly videos! We still have so much amazing footage to edit and share.

In this video we finally get onshore in St Helena after a few days in quarantine and explore this unique gem of an Island. St Helena is a truly magical place with breathtaking scenery anywhere you look. We also decide to alter our sailing plans while here. Our original plan was to sail from St Helena to Angra Dos Reis in Brazil but challenging weather during the summer months had us change our minds and set our sights somewhere further north up the coast.

Thanks for watching!

St. Helena to Ascension Island - Ep. 25

This sail from St. Helena to Ascension Island should have been the easiest passage yet but it was filled with loud alarms and gages not working. When it rains it pours!! UGH!! Just a hour out of St. Helena our auto pilot kept stopping and each time a very loud alarm sounded. No matter what we did we couldn't fix it, I had the manual out searching for troubleshooting ideas. We knew we couldn't hand steer all the way across the ocean and there are no repair facilities on Asension Island, so we turned around and headed back to St. Helena directly into the wind and waves. In the meantime we used the IridiumGo to reach out and ask my brother to search the internet to help solve the issue. After a stressful passage we are greeted by a pod of dolphins as we arrive to Ascension Island.
