Scuba Diving emergency, out of air in a fast current! St. Lawrence River

REAL DIVING ACCIDENT CAUGHT ON CAMERA - Emergency ascent from 18 m

PLEASE TURN YOUR SOUND ON

Emergency ascent from 18 m (60 ft.) with only 200 psi left.

What happened: While we were drift diving at Playa del Carmen (Mexico), my father got too absorbed with filming a turtle and forgot to check his air gauge. Due to the strong current, he got quickly separated from our group. He only realized that he was low on air when his breathing became difficult. Although he thought he was completely out of air, he actually still had about 200-300 psi left. The problem is that he was not wearing his eyeglasses and when he saw the gauge in the red zone (less than 500 psi), he wrongly assumed the tank was empty (he could not see the numbers clearly). He tried to attract our attention, but nobody saw or heard him! He than bolted for the surface. After a while, we realized he was missing... Terrified, I tried to swim against the current to go back and look for him (not a good idea). The divemaster signalled me to reunite with the group, but I was too upset to obey. After a while, my decreasing air supply forced me to return to the group and ascend. In the mean time, my dad was alone at the surface, having drifted a considerable distance. After about 10 minutes, a boat spotted him. Everything finished well, but the whole experience could have ended really badly. Thank God for keeping my dad alive! Let this be a lesson for other novice divers.

My scuba accident - passed out! Needed CPR.

In December 2016 I went scuba diving in Hawaii and did a 80 feet dive at Molokini crater near Maui. It was only my 2nd dive after the certification with a two year gap before my certification dive. My certification dive had occurred in Cancun in 2014. I struggled throughout the dive and started to panic and struggled with my air. I quickly inflated my BCD and passed out before reaching the surface. I was loaded onto a boat and given CPR before being transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center. I've given up scuba diving temporarily, but hope I can one day try again only with the one on one guidance at a much slower learning pace. Stay safe!

My first time scuba diving! Getting in was the hardest part haha!

It was a struggle just getting in the water!

Scuba Diving in Grenada for a new Private Islands episode I filmed in West Indies!

diving panic control

Here you can see how I forgot to keep some air in my lungs to expel the water that had entered the diaphragm while it was floating free in the water. This incident took place during my open water training.

Emergency ascent from 25 m depth. Episode 235

#emergency #lastAir #AmedBali Reconstruction of 18 years old event I was participant. During my Advanced diver course in Malta I experienced a situation when I had no air left in the tank and was forced to do emergency ascent. Technically I should drop my weights and do buoyant ascent but I decided to do it controlled speed way. And I was lucky enough to do it successfully. Now 18 years later, when I improved into my diving skills, I decided to repeat it just with clear understanding about what and how I do it. Please don't repeat it without proper training!

The Vickery Shipwreck (The VIC)- Diving with Gary Comstock

The Vickery sank in 1897 under strange circumstances. Her river captain was tacking back and forth in the narrows when she struck a shoal and sank in 130' of water. Some say she is haunted. The Vic is deteriorating rapidly , so if you are an advanced diver, and are adventurous and not spooked easily, make this a bucket-list dive.

Don't dive this wreck if you are not an experienced deep diver and wreck diver. Others have come before you and learned the hard way. The descent and ascent must be perfectly planned as she lies smack dab in the middle of the shipping channel. There is NO free ascent from this wreck in an emergency!

Bad Scuba Experience, Belize. Dive Master leaves me Stranded and lost. Ep121

Ep121. Bad Scuba Experience in Belize. Dive Master leaves me stranded and lost on a dive.

In this episode of Cruising Off Duty we continue our series where we use a Cruise Ship to get around the Caribbean to go scuba diving at 3 different islands. This is the episode where we take a Dive excursion at Belize. Although the Coral was healthy with lots of colour, it was not a big and breath taking as the coral canyons and deep coral walls (that drop off into some serious deep water) like there was in Roatan.

It was still quite good and we would dive here in Belize again. We would not dive with the company that took us on this dive though. It was booked through the cruise excursion desk. It was horribly run. It was disorganized and the Dive Master we had seemed to not be paying attention to the 6 swimmers he was responsible for. He left me stranded and lost on our second dive. In this case as I was stationary and filming some fish in a coral reef and was in plain view of the Dive Master. Without tapping his tank to get everyone's attention, he swam back to the boat and left me stranded out there alone. When he got back to the boat and realized he was missing a diver, he did not swim back to look for me. He got on the boat. When I realized I could see anyone, I swam for a bit in the direction I figured they went but still did not see anyone. I had no idea which exact direction the boat was, so after a while of swimming, I eventually surfaced to be able to see where the dive boat was.

One other thing of concern was, we noticed that this dive company did not take a roll call of the returning divers by calling out their names (like the other excursion companies did) and only seemed to count heads to see if everyone came back. With people moving around on the boat it would be quite easy to count someone twice and think that everyone is back aboard and motor away and leave someone behind. That is something of nightmares, and movies have been made of just such occurrences.

So, in conclusion ..... Belize is a good place to dive, but book a private dive company and make sure they get good reviews from previous divers.

Hopefully you enjoy this episode. If so, give it a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel so you don't miss any of the future episodes. If you have any questions you can leave them in the comments under the video or for an even more detailed Q&A you can reach us at CruisingOffDuty@gmail.com

Thanks for watching,

PS - Somehow my small camera bag with my usual main camera, Panasonic GH5, and my usual Vlog Camera, Canon G7Xii, were accidentally left in the trunk of the car and didn't make the trip to the Cruise Ship. In my backpack I did have my GoPro 5 and my Mavic Pro Drone, but I ended up shooting most of this episode using my iPhone X. It actually did a pretty good job. Except when I used the front facing camera or Selfie cam to try and Vlog our thoughts. Then, the fact the front facing camera does not have image stabilization was obvious. It made me miss my G7Xii a lot. Plus the G7X is a BEAST in low light, which is always a good feature in a Vlog camera.
