How School Lunches are Made in Japan

This is how Japanese school food lunches are made in Japan called Kyushoku（給食) it’s served in all Japanese elementary and most junior high schools, it’s known for its balanced and varied menu all planned by certified nutritionist. Today, I’ve got special access to visit the Musashino City School Lunch & Dietary Education Promotion Foundation servicing 18 schools in total with 181 hard working staff, I’m going inside to one of their massive Japanese Japanese school food kitchens, so large in scale I want to call it a food factory to better capture its size. It’s so massive that it produces food for 8 different schools each and every day. Mornings start at 7:30 AM, as the food must be prepared, cooked and then shipped out all before lunch time, ready to eat for a total of 2700 students. And this entire food education system is supported by the Japanese government, meaning that on average, the monthly school lunch fee paid by parents at public schools is about 4,300 yen at elementary schools and 4,900 yen at junior high schools, about 33-38 USD dollars a month.

Musashino City School Lunch & Dietary Education Promotion Foundation in Japan prepares massive quantities of school lunches, called kyushoku, every day. Employing a staff of 70 workers, the kitchen is able to cook and package all of its meals in three hours so they can be delivered hot and fresh for lunchtime.
We got an inside look into the foundation's massive kitchen to see how cooks prepare these lunches in such big batches.

What My Japanese Wife Eats in a Day

This is what my Japanese wife normally eats when she’s at home cooking for herself. A very Typical Japanese breakfast, lunch and dinner, especially when I or my 2 year old son is not home with her. This is a day in a Japanese woman's life in Japan when eating all alone. As a Japanese mother it is sometimes difficult to eat these meals as she has to consider what the rest of the family wants to eat, but if she could, she would eat this regularly. For example, my Japanese wife makes tamagoyaki, a Japanese rolled egg omelet, typically eaten for breakfast. The seasonings vary depending on the area of Japan, usually sweeter in the east and a strong dashi with a salty appeal in the west. My wife is from Aichi which is located in the middle, so she prefers it sweet with a strong dashi flavor. And she loves natto, fermented soybeans. It has a uniquely strong scent and flavor along with a gooey texture which for many Japanese is part of their everyday meal. There are many ways to eat natto, like eating it with raw egg or mayonnaise. My wife usually prefers to mix it with one of her many Japanese condiment tubes. Today, she’s going with grated ginger.

Raising Japanese children can be quite different compared to the rest of the world. Different Japanese customs and Japanese traditions lend to a different way a Japanese baby or Japanese child is raised. As Japanese kids grow, they are typically taught empathy, how to care about Japanese group harmony and to think about others. As a Japanese baby, most of their time is spent with their Japanese mother and they grow up in the same bedroom. In fact, many Japanese don't leave the house until after they get married. Japanese children are also taught to ride public transportation like ride a Japanese train or ride a Japanese bus in the middle of Tokyo or any other large Japanese city. Behind the Counter at a local Japanese Bento Shop

This is a Japan behind the counter food tour of a local Japanese bento shop. For more than 40 years, Bento Kawano has been making delicious Japanese handmade bento lunches at the affordable price of 600yen. At this value and quality it’s no surprise everyday that the customer lunch lines wrap around the entire block. One important things about this Japanese bento shop is that they must be extra careful about food safety. Since Bentos are designed to be able to sit on the shelf for several hours without refrigeration, the food must always be fully cooked. Run by Japanese food craftsman, Inoue san, he changes the menu everyday so his customers have something to look forward to. He particularly enjoys analyzing the performance of his previous bentos and creating new ones to see how popular it will be, but ultimately he says that whatever bento he serves, he creates each one as if he’ll be sharing it with his loved ones. Interestingly, this Tokyo bento shop runs 4 rice cookers simultaneously throughout the entire day to keep up with the demand using a special hitomebore rice from Miyagi prefecture known for its exquisite taste especially when its cooled down. Even the rice at the shop was specifically selected by Inoue san. I hope you enjoy this Tokyo Hidden gem bento shop.

How 2 Million Children Are Fed Daily By The World’s Biggest Free School Meal Provider | Big Batches
The Akshaya Patra Foundation has provided 3 billion free school meals and is one of India’s largest nongovernmental organizations. It prepares freshly cooked food and nutritious meals for 2 million children every day in 65 kitchens across 14 states and two union territories in India. We visited one of its mega kitchens in Bangalore to see how cooks produce 75,000 meals in under four hours.

This is what typical Japanese babies eat. It was surprising to find out that they don't just eat applesauce from what I was originally told. These are the Japanese baby meals we prepare for our less than 1 year old Japanese baby. He started eating baby food from when he was 5 months old and it started with rice porridge and ever since then the meals have been getting more intricate. This is also how we plan and meal prep our Japanese baby food.

Thanks to Squarespace, get 10% Off: Japan tourists or foreigners coming to Japan may not understand Japanese culture because of this some Japanese dislike foreigners for not understanding Japanese manner and etiquette. As a generalization, Japanese follow the rules and get frustrated when people don't follow those rules, but often time they generally avoid confrontation when they have these sort of issues. Based on my experience, this is why Japanese don't like foreigners and tourists and what they are really thinking when foreigners break the rules. I can't stress enough that these are generalizations and not everyone is like this as everyone is unique, but for the purpose of this video and to show what Japanese may be getting pissed off about, I speak in general terms. These are my Japan tips for tourists to help them understand Japanese manners so they don't make those tourist mistakes in Japan or in that they may be unknowingly viewed as misbehaving tourists in Japan. Although some Japanese hate foreigners for doing things in the video, some other Japanese may be okay with the behavior but again I am speaking in general terms. In general, I don't think foreigners want to be rude tourists in Japan, but because they don't understand Japanese rules or Japanese manner they make the classical foreigner mistakes in Japan. These are must-know Japan tips to and a Japan guide when visiting Japan.

Day in the Life of a Japanese Natto Maker
A day in the life of a Japanese Natto Fermented Soybeans Maker in Tokyo Japan. This is what a typical day working in a Japan shop and Japanese kitchen is like for a Japanese worker in this field. Japanese work culture can not only be viewed in large Japanese companies, but also smaller Japanese business with a few staff. This Day in the Life features a Japanese natto shop called Amakusa Natto, a specialized natto store established in 2019 and how to make natto, fermented soybeans. They craft a premium high-quality natto all 100%....by hand. A relatively young company with, with only a few staff, producing some of the best handmade natto possible. Natto, aka fermented soybeans, is probably most known worldwide for its powerful smell, distinctive flavor, and gooey texture but the shop uniquely crafts their natto with less smell and gooeyness making it more palatable for customers while still maintaining its super food and extremely nutritious qualities. Regardless, 85% of the Japanese population have come to enjoy natto’s ultra unique taste and texture. Interestingly though, many may think that rice is the go-to breakfast carb choice for Japanese, but when questioned, 56% of Japanese today answered that they tend to choose bread over rice. Given the typical work day in Japan, it seems only natural for people who are in a morning rush to save time on preparing a bowl of rice. In fact, soybeans are one of the most important ingredients in Japanese cuisine, as 3.5 Million tons of soybeans are used every year and it can be found in the most common Japanese ingredients such as Tofu, soy sauce, miso, kinako powder and of course natto, included everyday in Japanese meals anytime of the day.

This is how my Japanese wife eats super cheap in a day, less $2 per meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Before I showed what My Japanese wife eats typically eats in a day, but this time I wanted share how she is able to do it on a budget for an entire day. This is a day in a Japanese woman's life in Japan when eating all alone when trying to save money. As a Japanese mother it is sometimes difficult to eat these meals as she has to consider what the rest of the family wants to eat, but when she is by herself, sometimes she can in Japan inexpensively. My Japanese wife, Maiko, born and raised in Japan, and the mother of our 2 and half year old son. First she cooks rice, as it’s one of the best ways in Japan to save, while also satisfying her stomach, as one bowl costs only about 20-30 cents. Luckily, Japanese are so passionate about their rice, including my wife, that many rice cookers can uniquely adapt to 40 different rice brands and can also be programmed for the desired result such as moistness and firmness, which allow her to eat a satisfying dish at a great price.

Featured in my Japanese Street Food Tour video in Tokyo Jujo Ginza, I'm back going behind the counter at this Japanese Fried Food Sozai shop. This Tokyo Hidden Spot Japan Food spot is definitely worth visiting if you've never had Japanese fried food before as it has everything from Japanese Fried Chickem Japanese chicken katsu, korokke and even yakitori. Aisaika nestled in Tokyo’s local Jujo Ginza shopping street, 5 minutes from Jujo station. This Japanese Deli-like Fried Food Heaven, Sozai shop, Aisaika nestled in Tokyo’s local Jujo Ginza shopping street, 5 minutes from Jujo station. Japan Sozai shops are known for their freshly made side dishes that families buy to add to their dinner table, and this shop is no exception, serving families delicious fried food and other dishes for the last 14 years. The karaage fried chicken here tastes very similar to how the owner's mother used to make it and he says that he always loved it when she put it in his school bento box as a kid. Apparently, his customers love the karrage fried chicken too as he sells about 40 to 50 kilos, 110 lbs a day! So the shop serves quite a bit of chicken dishes by design. Due to the nature of a typical Japanese sozai shops, food is displayed out in the open throughout the day and because of this beef and pork items tend to get harder over time while chicken remains soft and juicy.
