In this second episode of my journey through Saudi Arabia I travel to the Edge of the World, located in the rocky deserts, an adventurous day trip from Riyadh. This is arguably one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Saudi Arabia, and part of the much larger Tuwaiq Escarpment. It earned its nickname because of the clear uninterrupted views of the horizon.
I traveled here with a tourist guide (Mr. Ismael) who explained me more about this fascinating place. There are no clear pathways and signs, so if you travel to this region please be very careful. After hiking around the Edge of the World, we also visited a cave hidden in the ground, and eventually a camel market on the way back to Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia is mostly known in the ‘Western world’ for its petroleum export, the birthplace of Islam, and unfortunately also poor human rights record. But as I discover there is much more to this massive country than first meets the eye. In these series I hope to give a glimpse into what was once an almost ‘forbidden place’ in the Middle East for independent travelers, and is now open for visitors from around the world.

I flew to Riyadh on a whim. After a few days in the mega city, I was ready to see the vast deserts of Arabia that you picture. Fortunately, just about an hour roadtrip from the city, you can stand on the edge of the earth overlooking the vast nothingness of the desert. It's an epic sight, with dramatic cliffs diving into the depths of an ancient ocean that has been turned into dust. There are none of the usual safety precautions, instead you are faced with the rugged beauty and danger of nature. It was a great taste of the deserts that awaited me in Saudi Arabia, and here is how it went.

Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Jeddah, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, and the Red Sea coast.
In this video I travel to Riyadh, the capital city in the center of the country. After visiting a mosque for Friday prayer and eating lunch with the locals, I tour to modern shopping malls, museums, traditional bazaars, a construction site with migrant workers, the famous Sky Bridge Kingdom Tower, and finally the Riyadh Season Festival, designed to promote tourism and culture. While I spent almost 3 days in Riyadh, I comprised the video to make it into one single day.

One of the major attractions in Riyadh is the Edge Of The World. It is Riyadh's version of the Grand Canyon. It's a 45-60 minute ride from the city center and is only accessible by 4x4.

Hi, friends we visited Edge of the world early morning so that it has not crowded so that we can take the video freely. 'Edge of the world' is part of Tuwaiq Escarpments that runs through the central region. The gorgeous sight of the cliffs and endless panoramic view of the plains below make it an unforgettable tourist attraction. It is an exciting experience to walk along the cliffs. Care should be taken not to slip off as there are no signboards of warning or iron fencing. It is not so difficult to walk up to the heads of these twin rocks

One of my most memorable activities in Saudi Arabia was a trip to Edge of the World in Riyadh. Along with Madain Saleh in Al Ula and the Al Balad district of Jeddah, the Edge of the World, officially named Jebel Fihrayn, is one of the top popular destinations in Saudi Arabia.

There’s a new route to Edge of the world which small cars can also easily go and explore the most popular destination in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
If you really love adventure trips, then don’t wait...
visit this must visit place in Riyadh with your car even if it’s small but at your own risk. Only problem in this route is that : in between this route there are some sandy roads which you can divert to alternative roads next to that as it’s a desert. Any 2WD can easily cross this route.

The Edge Of The World - Saudi Arabia
At the tail end of 2019 I managed to get the chance to visit the edge of the world in Saudi Arabia. Standing at an impressive 300m high, this is easily one of the most amazing places on the planet. Making the journey out of the capital city Riyadh, through the desert to the Edge to watch the sun go down here was an unbelievable experience and something I will never forget.

3 Jan 2020 - I've been thinking of going to the Edge of the World, but we were lack of desert driving experience. Therefore, during the first weekend of 2020, we went in a group together with an experienced guide, MJ. He's originally from Sri Lanka and has been in Saudi Arabia for 10 years.
This is an adventurous day trip from Riyadh. Our itinerary is as follows:
10:15am - left Riyadh, made a few stops along the way
13:00pm - reached Edge of the World & started hiking
15:15pm - reached campsite, had BBQ lunch
17:00pm - sunset hike
18:00pm - back to the campsite
21:00pm - headed home
23:00pm - reached Riyadh
It was a great trip with fun people from different countries and continents!

The top day trip from Riyadh is to the Edge of the World and it is a must do for all travellers to Riyadh, and people from Riyadh.
I went on this Riyadh day trip with Riyadh Hiking ( who run this tour every Friday and Saturday. We all met at a starbucks in the city and then were taken into the desert near Riyadh and arrived at the Edge of the World within 1.5 hours.
We got to walk for 1-2 hours along the edge and take photos in many different places, including what is also known as Shawarma Mountain (haha) until the sunset and then we headed to camp.
Once at camp we were cooked a BBQ, got to go inside a cave to see bats and ride on quad bikes, all whilst meeting and chatting to new people.
Overall it was a great way to see the amazing views of Edge of the World which cannot be missed when visiting Riyadh, and meet new people from Saudi, Riyadh and other countries.

EDGE OF THE WORLD | Best Places to Visit in Riyadh | Riyadh | Saudi Arabia | April Tejerero
The Edge of the World (whose real name is Jebel Fihrayn) has become one of the most popular destinations around Riyadh. This nickname was given because of its main attraction that are the stunning viewpoints from the top of the 300 meter high cliffs overlooking the surrounding plain. Those cliffs are the result of the tectonic movement of the Arabian plate towards the north east because of the spread of the Red Sea rift located 1000 kilometers to the west of Tuwaiq. The clear cut it generated in the sedimentary grounds of Riyadh area reveals the layers of sediments that accumulated there when the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula was a shallow tropical sea during Jurassic period (150 million years ago).

Wonder what to do in Saudi Arabia? Looking for things to do in Riyadh? Look no further! This travel vlog episode features my day tour to the Edge of the World, an amazing natural wonder that is little known outside of Saudi Arabia. The Edge of the World is however a must-see Middle East Travel and sightseeing destination when in Riyadh and Saudi Arabia. The gigantic rock formation in the Arabian desert is a must-see when you visit Saudi Arabia nature. It is located about 2 hours from Riyadh, taking a desert drive through the Saudi Arabia desert.
I went with a tour operator and the video also shows an amazing Saudi desert campsite dinner and a cool (and somewhat spooky) bat cave visit at the end. The bat cave entrance was basically a hole with a ladder that led to the bat cave. Despite it being on a desert storm day or sand storm day, it was an amazing, unforgettable day and definitely a highlight of my trip to KSA. So if you plan to visit Saudi Arabia and you are looking for what to do when in riyadh, this is definitely a great sightseeing tip for an amazing Riyadh experience!
