Santorini's Explosive History - Volcano Caldera 🔥 💣🌋

The massive volcanic eruption of Santorini blew open what we today know as the caldera. When an earthquake ruptured the earth's crust, water seeped into the underwater crater. Heated by magma, steam caused pressure to build and eventually explode. This video was recorded while standing at the small church just below Skaros Rock in Imerovigli, Santorini.

How did a volcano make Santorini?
------------------------------

Santorini is actually a volcanic caldera formed by a massive volcanic eruption 3,600 years ago. The eruption was so powerful that it led to the collapse of the center of the island, creating Santorini's breathtaking cliffs and the iconic crescent shape.

THE VOLCANO OF SANTORINI, GREECE, 1960

In the film we watch a visit to Nea Kameni of Thira, the active volcano of Santorini. Just four years before the film was shot, the great earthquake of 1956 had occurred, and the last eruption happened 10 years earlier, in 1950. We are watching the boatman who is leading the boat out of the port of Santorini and heading to the volcano. Then we see images from the Nea Kameni, the volcanic rocks and the many fumes from the crater of the volcano. The film closes with a sunset.

Santorini | The history

Santorini | The history : Santorini is a scenic volcanic island in the middle of the Aegean Sea, about 250 kilometres southwest of Athens. The island is what is left of a colossal volcanic explosion 3,500 years ago that wiped out a flourishing prehistoric civilization.

The original name of Santorini is Thera, and by that name it was settled anew in classical times and prospered through the ages to be an important centre of Aegean shipping and trade. Santorini is a corruption of Santa Irene, or Saint Irene, which is what the Venetians called it in the Middle Ages.

IMAX Greece: Volcanic eruption Santorini

Clip from the IMAX 2006 documentary Greece: Secrets of the past (from MacGillivray Freeman Films).

The eruption at Santorini (Greece) is considered to be one of the largest in history, and certainly the most massive volcanic explosion in the last 10,000 years.

Pyroclastic flows, one of the most destructive of all volcanic processes, shattered the island of Santorini in 1646 BC.

Pyroclastic flows are terrifying avalanches of gas, rock and lava that can attain temperatures above 1,000 degrees and move at over 100 miles per hour, following the topography of the land. The flows essentially knock down, carry away, shatter or burn down any object they encounter, leaving nothing but destruction in their wake.

The boom was heard as far away as Sweden. Tsunamis rocked the ocean afterwards and the surrounding areas were dark for months.

With some 7 cubic miles of magma expelled, the volcano collapsed, leaving behind a massive crater, an unimaginably huge plume of ash and the resultant pyroclastic flows. A rush of hot, sticky mud and cataclysmic rock bombs were ejected out of the crater. Within about a week's time, some 70 meters of volcanic deposits had buried Akrotiri, perfectly preserving the town's frescoes, pots, pans and structures exactly as they were left behind.

The island is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred some 3600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep and may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km (68 mi) to the south, through a gigantic tsunami. Another popular theory holds that the Thera eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis.

Santorini, Thira or Strongyli (former name) is an island located in the southern Aegean Sea, in the archipelago of the Cyclades, south of Ios and west of Anafi. It is 128 nautical miles from Piraeus and 63 nautical miles from Crete. Its capital is Fira, while Athinios, the largest port on the island, has been created in the homonymous bay. Its area is 76.19 square kilometers. Today Santorini is one of the most famous travel destinations - tourist centers in the world.

It is known for its volcano. The last volcanic activity was in the year 1950. Parts of the volcano of Santorini are: Nea Kameni (1707-1711 AD), Palea Kameni (46-47 AD), the underwater volcano Columbus (active) ( 1650 AD), the Christian islands. Santorini belongs to the volcanic arc of the Aegean and is characterized as an active volcano along with Methana, Milos and Nisyros. Santorini as well as the islands of Thirasia and Aspronisi are remnants of the volcanic island of Strongyli. The Round was a volcanic cone. Its central part was blown up together with the crater of the volcano by the Minoan eruption that took place in 1613 BC. and resulted in the creation of what we now call the Caldera of Santorini and the destruction of the prehistoric civilization of the island. In the sea gap that formed between Thira and Thirasia, which has a depth of 1,500 meters, from time to time volcanic cones came to the surface that formed the following islands: Palea, Mikri and Nea Kameni, Kameni Georgiou AI, Kameni tou Fouke , Afrosa and Daphne. All these islands grew slowly and united, except for Palea Kameni.
