The story of how I got robbed in Ecuador

Security and Safety in Ecuador - How can I be safe in Ecuador?

Safety and security is a never ending topic of discussion amongst retirees in Ecuador. It usually just takes common sense and being reasonable in your thinking to keep you safe and secure in this country full of extreme poverty. It's easy to be a victim here if you don't follow common sense advice from those that have come ahead of you.

The following is discussed in this video.
Video Index:
01:48 - If you walk into a neighborhood and don't see anyone around, get out.
02:23 - Don't flash money and jewelry, especially around a crowd
03:46 - Don't give to beggars
05:21 - Don't stop and talk to two people that approach you on a motorcycle, or even one by him/herself
06:14 - Carry your backpack on your chest when in a crowd
07:08 - When you get cash out of the ATM machine, especially in the mall, take a taxi home
07:50 - If you need to take a load of cash out of the bank and if they offer you guard escort, take it.
08:57 - If you're in a crowded market place, like Nueve Tarqui or the Mercato Centrial, keep you cell phone in your pocket, a front pocket. Don't carry things that will stick out of your pocket. And more importantly, don't flash a bunch of money.
09:48 - Don't walk the streets alone at night.
10:13 - If a taxi driver tells you, Don't go down that street, even in the daytime, listen to him.
10:44 - If you are driving a car and all of a sudden a rock comes through your window, keep going. Don't stop to investigate.
11:24 - When you are out-and-about and you have even the smallest feeling of uncertainty, get a taxi and go home.
11:34 - If you live in a building that has security (guards), make them your best friend. When they do something nice for you, like protect a package for you, or deliver something to you, reward them. A dollar or two or three goes a long ways for them.
Always (unless you have a job-specific purpose for it) always leave your passport, credit cards, cedula, and large amounts of cash at home. Take only the items (like cash) that you need for the day. Leave the rest of it at home.
13:25 - Get a small can of pepper spray and carry it with you but more importantly, KNOW how to use it first.
14:55 - Don't carry any dangerous weapons like knives or guns. You may end up on the business end of one if you don't know what you are doing.
15:53 - Be sure you have a doctor that you can call your primary care physician.
16:21 - Don't involve the police unless YOU are the victim. Other than that, stay away from them. They're not necessarily here to help you. You may find yourself sitting in a jail cell waiting for something to get done.
17:07 - Keep in touch with local friends. If something happens to you, you DON'T want to be alone. If something happens and you get hurt, you will need resources for getting the help you need. Make an agreement with someone that will check on you if they haven't heard from you in a reasonable period of time. Give them a key to your apartment so they can get in to your residence in the event you've been incapacitated.
18:10 - Don't invite beggars into your home.
18:33 - Stay away from the beach after sundown
19:10 - Guys be weary of single girls (pairs) in bars that appear to be super friendly
20:31 - Guys if you're in a bar, don't go to restroom with an unfinished drink on the table
21:06 - ALWAYS keep an eye on your credit card when using it
