Safari Camps in Zambia’s South Luangwa

South Luangwa is Zambia’s premier wildlife destination, is home to some of Africa’s best walking safaris, and can easily be combined with a trip to Victoria Falls.

Most safari lodges in South Luangwa National Park are located on the banks of the abundant Luangwa River and there is a range of accommodation types to choose from. Whether you prefer to be in the lap of luxury at a permanent lodge, go on a mobile camping adventure, or combine the two, you will be well cared for by highly skilled game rangers and welcoming hosts. You will also be able to experience the wide range of activities on offer in South Luangwa including traditional 4x4 game drives, water-based game viewing on kayaks and boats, fishing and of course, thrilling walking safaris.

Mobile camps in South Luangwa comprise fully-furnished safari tents set up in remote locations. You may have to forgo some modern luxuries like Wi-Fi and air conditioning, but you will be rewarded with one of the most authentic experiences Africa has to offer.

After a night or two on a mobile camping adventure, check into a permanent luxury lodge like those featured in the video.

Chiawa Camp - The Pioneer and premier luxury safari camp of the Lower Zambezi National Park

THE SOUL THAT CHIAWA SAFARIS IS BUILT ON.

The family owned and operated, multi-award-winning Chiawa Camp, is the pioneer of the Lower Zambezi National Park, the first camp to settle along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. Zambia’s premier luxury safari camp, Chiawa is a gentle and unhurried experience for both wildlife and guests, while still offering up a diverse range of activities. From game drives to heart-stopping game walks as well as canoeing, boating and angling – all in the company of Africa’s finest guides.

Each of the luxury tents boast spectacular views over the Zambezi River and its vast array of resident wildlife. Elephant, lion, leopard, hippo and much more, occupy this gorgeous region of Zambia.

The creative culinary team at the Chiawa Camp ensure meals are of the highest standard, from seasonal menus developed and enhanced over time.

Along with Chiawa’s renowned dedication to its guests, staff, local communities and conservation, allow yourself to share in Chiawa’s passion, so that you can enjoy one of Africa’s finest safari camps and the wildlife adventure of a lifetime.

In the Soli language, Chiawa means ‘The one who shares’ – an appropriate name for such a camp that honours the local people and their traiditions.

The Lower Zambezi National Park, by virtue of the Zambezi River and its parallel escarpment, is one of Africa’s most scenic wildernesses, home to an impressive quantity and variety of wildlife that can be viewed not only on the more usual land-based Lower Zambezi activities, but also on a variety of water-based activities, and in the camps themselves.

In comparison to typical African safaris, the Lower Zambezi safari experience is unique: more remote, more exclusive, and experiential in nature. While both guests and guides require more patience with regards to game viewing, the results are often outstanding.

Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro are located in the middle of prime wildlife and habitat zones of the Lower Zambezi National Park, so we usually do not have to travel far to see wildlife. What’s more, often wildlife make their way into camp to visit us, providing out-of-this-world game sightings. Wildlife to be spotted includes elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, waterbuck, hippos and crocodiles.

Explore the safari activities below, all of which are included your unforgettable stay at Chiawa Camp and/or Old Mondoro.

A collaboration between its new owners, Chichele Safaris, and the Cumings Family of Chiawa Camp & Old Mondoro – the reimagined Puku Ridge is situated on one of the Park’s prime sites.

The well-known and much loved facilities, service and guiding have been upgraded to the highest of standards that the Cumings Family’s own Lower Zambezi safari camps have become renowned. Unique in design but traditional in outlook, it has been completely rebuilt with a lighter footprint.

Elements from the Luangwa bush camps of old have been combined with traditional village life and authentic, local art works complement crucial creature comforts making for one of the most appealing and welcome safari camp launches for many years.

Previous guests of the old Puku Ridge will feel that everything has changed, but nothing has changed, as many special touches from the past have been retained.

THE WORLD'S FIRST CERTIFIED CARBON NEUTRAL SAFARI CAMPS

'BEST IN AFRICA' - GUIDING TEAM

REMARKABLE CONCENTRATIONS OF WILDLIFE

The Lower Zambezi National Park
Lingering along the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe, this iconic region (which is still relatively undeveloped) is renowned for abundant wildlife in a raw and remote wilderness. From island hopping elephant and buffalo to prides of lion and prolific leopard sightings. Riverine ebony and fig tress grow thickly along the water’s edge, bordering inland floodplains with towering winterthorn and acacia. Rolling hills sit quietly as the backdrop of this just over 4,000 square kilometre park.

Best Time to Visit – from May to November (our camps are closed mid-November through April) with prime game viewing from June.

The South Luangwa National Park
A vast and pristine wilderness awaits those who visit this 9,000 sq km park. Open, grassy plains, lush valleys and mature woodlands are dramatically interrupted by the dynamic Luangwa River and her waterways, drawing an intense concentration of wildlife in search of hydration during the dry season. Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, herds of elephant and puku, and predators thrive in this captivating landscape. The most intact major river system in Africa and life-blood of the park, it is not to be missed.

Best Time to Visit – from July to October as the river attracts an exceptional number of wildlife.

Safari Activities in the South Luangwa with Puku Ridge

What can you do on a safari in the South Luangwa? Let's find out...

Zambia's South Luangwa National Park is a remote, vast and unspoiled ecosystem with varying habitats and an abundance of wildlife, making for incredibly exclusive safari experiences when you visit our luxury safari lodge, Puku Ridge.

While lacking in the water-based safari activities of our Lower Zambezi lodges Old Mondoro and Chiawa Camp, the safari experiences and activities of the South Luangwa include incredible walking safaris, photographic opportunities from the new hide at Puku Ridge, and the finest game viewing, day and night.

Check out the video for a visual immersion into what's possible on safari with us.

*Safari Activity #1*
Walking Safaris
The South Luangwa is home of the walking safari in Zambia! You will be kept on your toes as you follow in the footsteps of explorers from the 18th century where the wildlife still roams freely. A sensory safari experience and quite exhilarating. You are on THEIR turf now.

But worry not, you are in the capable hands of an experienced, highly trained safari guide and an armed Government National Parks scout. Track wildlife, from elusive Leopard and African wild dog, to the more easily spotted Puku, Giraffe, and Elephant. Amble gently, taking in the uniquely Zambian sights, scents and sounds, which feel very different when experienced on-foot than in a game vehicle.

*Safari Activity #2*
Game Drives, Day or Night

The game drive vehicles are custom built 4x4 luxury safari trucks, perfectly outfitted for guests and professional photographers alike.

The game drive is the safest and most effective way to explore this remote landscape and see its incredible wildlife - getting (comfortably) close to the animals yet leaving them undisturbed to go about their business as you simply observe.

Our safari game drive activities typically venture out for a few hours in the morning and again in the late afternoon, culminating in sundowners (a cocktail of your choice and some delicious snacks if you wish) and then returning to camp on a night drive, using filtered red spotlights to enjoy the crepuscular and nocturnal creatures.

*Safari Activity #3*
The Photographic Hide

Located right underneath the main observation deck at our luxury South Luangwa safari lodge Puku Ridge, is our new photographic hide.

A guest favorite amongst safari experiences, where one can observe (and photograph) wildlife without disturbing them from a very close vantage point. A rather serene and relaxed safari activity, where you can watch the uninhibited behavior of the animals as they make their way to our lodge-front watering hole. As they are unaware of your presence, you can truly take in the setting and scene as a quiet witness, as the wildlife go about their daily bathing and hydration.

Watch a new Elephant calf learning to roll and wallow in the mud, enjoy the constant dance of the Giraffe as it bends and dips for a quick drink, and safely view the more dangerous species such as buffalo and lion as they come for a drink.

*Safari Activity #4*
Safari Sundowners

It doesn’t get much more African than the traditional safari experience of sundowners in the bush. Our version of ‘happy hour’ out here, is often enjoyed during a break in your evening game drive, as the sun sets.A chilled drink of your choice and a delicious variety of snacks is served against the unforgettable African backdrop.

What Is The South Luangwa National Park Known For?
The South Luangwa is 9,050 square kilometres (in contrast to the North’s 4,636 sq.km) and is colloquially referred to as the “Valley of the Leopard” due to such a high density of this elusive African animal being found in the park.

Where To Stay In The South Luangwa
Chiawa Safaris is proud to offer (so far) one incredible South Luangwa accommodation option. The luxury safari camp, Puku Ridge, is fast becoming one of the most popular luxury lodges to stay at in the South Luangwa – and Zambia as a whole. Puku Ridge, recently awarded by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the 25 Top Resorts in Africa for 2022. , is wilderness refined.

ZAMBIA - From South Luangwa to the Lower Zambezi // EP.48

We are exploring some of the most beautiful wilderness in Zambia, visiting the South Luangwa National Park, and canoeing down the mighty Zambezi river.

We visit our first Safari in Africa with our own Land Rover Defender (self-drive safari). It is one of the wildest Parks in Africa and a delight as there are few visitors. We are visiting in the wet season, so it is a bit more difficult to spot animals due to the tall vegetation. But the main advantage is that we get to see the cute offspring, all the baby animals that were born weeks prior.

At the peak of the day as it gets hot the animals retrieve to the shadow, deep in the park so it is difficult to find them. We decide is a good moment to try other paths. The ranger told us it is still too wet to drive out of the main gravel path, but we still want to give it a go. We try all the paths first before the Prado attempts them, but all of them are too challenging. So much that we get our Defender stuck in the mud.

We leave the Luangwa river behind and cross the country, literally to get to our next destination. The meeting point between the Kafue and the Zambezi rivers. We are going to canoe down the Zambezi for 30km, Kayaking between hippos and crocodiles. It is a thrilling experience, and a beautiful way of being in nature, without disturbing it.

A one in a lifetime experience.

Enjoy The Ride!

Luangwa Bush Camping- Zambia

Name one of the most exclusive experiences on offer in Africa? Bush Camping with Robin Pope Safaris!

What is “bush camping”? …walking with the best of guides, dipping deeper into the bush from the fixed camps by camping out for a couple of nights, dinner and stories around the fire, simple but delicious food… When staying at Tena Tena and Nsefu you can walk between the two for two or three days, camping on the way. This is simple camping but with that extra touch of comfort. There are stand up tents, mattresses on the ground, sheets and blankets, wash basin, shared 60L bucket shower, bush loo, full bar and food service, fully serviced camp (except laundry). The walking is in one of the most lagoon rich areas of the Luangwa and hence the game is superb.
