Palau is an island paradise standing up to the world

The tiny island of Palau is a remote, beautiful paradise and the rest of the world knows it. But existing in a connected world can put extreme stress on small countries. The nation of just 20,000 people has seen an influx of tourists recently, but that hasn’t necessarily been a good thing.

But visitors arriving by the tens of thousands from such behemoths as Japan, South Korea, and China, put considerable stress on Palau’s environment and economy.

Quartz News travels far into the Pacific to find out how the island nation of Palau is standing up for itself against the world’s superpowers.

Gratitude & Acknowledgement:
Thank you to all the Palauans who took part in this video sharing their culture to simply helping me learn. This is what cultural immersion is all about and grateful to all of you.

Why Living Like A..?:

Living Like A Palauan was an idea I had prior to Palau had I immersed myself deeply and naturally into the culture. And because I did, that idea quickly took off with the video project underway Mid November until this week.

But Living Like A.. didnt begin in Palau, it actually began 5 years ago in the Kingdom Of Tonga????????, where I was so blessed to be able to stay in a village on the island group of Vava'u.

Little did I know, my curiosity of the ways Tongans live their lives allowed me to, in the short time that i stayed, LIVE LIKE A TONGAN.

Living Like A Tongan was my very first true culturally immersive experience in my travels and to this day is very special to me, as well as the thousands of Tongans that watch it. It opened the door to a whole new inner passion of mine and that was learning about world cultures. ????

Living Like a Tongan happened to be one of my biggest Youtube videos and has beautifully brought so many proud Tongans to my video and to my channel, thanking me for loving their culture and taking the time to show the Tongan way.

Living Like A Palaun is very much all of this with the same heart, love, and passion for culture. The only difference now, my camera gear is far better and my storytelling and post editing skills are through the roof.

Which means, the ability to extend the voices of Palau and represent a whole culture is far greater. ????????

I am Grace on Tour and travel has been my biggest passion ever since I can remember. My very first international trip was done two weeks after I was born. In the summer of 2018 I started posting on this channel as I set off on a trip around Asia before studying a semester in Taiwan. During this time my love for travel grew and I tried to travel to new places during my weekends off from university. Throughout uni I made travel a priority and worked multiple side jobs to fund my travels. After doing my thesis in Hong Kong I graduated in June 2019. At this point I decided to take a gap year and go traveling. My goal was to visit as many countries as possible. I soon realized that travel is what I love and wan´t to keep on doing. I now dream of visiting every country in the world.

Koror- home of the largest city of the same name
Rock Islands- made up of almost 300 mostly uninhabited islands, home to Jellyfish Lake, a lake with millions of jellyfish with very weak stingers where snorkelers can safely swim.
Peleliu - about 700 people live here, mostly in the village of Kloulklubed
Angaur - remote southern outpost with about 200 inhabitants, site of a major WWII naval battle and a modern day surfing destination of some repute
Sonsorol Islands - consists of Sonsorol and Hatohobei states, these islands are home to about 100 people way to the southwest of the rest of Palau.

Melekeok - is the new capital with a population of just 381 (!) This is on the island of Babeldaob and is a pleasant drive from Koror along the new road constructed by Daewoo. Head out over the bridge and the road to Melekeok is clearly signposted.
Koror - the largest city and former capital. Koror contains Palau's only real concentration of shops, restaurants, and hotels. Many of the largest dive operators are also based here.

Main Destinations

The South West islands of Palau are worth a visit if you have your own marine transport such as an ocean-going yacht. There are Sonsorol, Fana, Meriil, Hatohobei and Helen Reef, a conservation area. However be sure to take mosquito repellent if visiting Meriil as its local name is dancing island.

Exploring the Big Island of Palau with a local!

We had the opportunity to explore Babelthuap/Babeldaob/Baberudaobu To/Arrecifos (the big island of Palau) with a local guide! It was awesome! It involved new fruits, visiting popular (and not so popular) landmarks, getting a fresh coconut and laughing a lot. At first we looked into renting a car, we weren't sure how well a big tour would go. However, with Fish 'n' Fins, even if only two people signed up for a tour, they will do it! SO we basically got a private tour but only paid for a group.

It wouldn't have been what it was without the man himself - Quincy! He was awesome. Outgoing, intelligent and just fun.

We had many off camera conversations revolving around his love for his home country and the struggles it has.

We had an awesome time and felt like it really rounded out our time in Palau well.

Thank you for having us Palau!

About Us

We met in college and started a five year journey to graduate, get jobs, pay off student loans and save money to travel. After getting married we bought a one way ticket to Greece in July of 2021 and have been traveling around the Globe since. Living abroad definitely brings some unique experiences.

These laidback Youtube videos will be our way of keeping in touch with family and friends as we explore different countries, try new and strange foods (and of course pizza), and see how many times we can avoid airplane fares. These homevideos will be the only souvenir we end up with at the end (only because nothing else will fit in our bags).

Thanks for watching!

Welcome to my daily vlogs! TRAVEL. FOOD. COMEDY. SINGING. ANTS. LIFE.

I upload a new video every day at 7AM EST!

About Me:

My bio is pretty random: In short, I am a professional singer/songwriter from Toronto, Canada who moved to Manila, Philippines which sorta became my Hollywood because my first Youtube channel MIKEYBUSTOSVIDEOS grew popular due to Filipino comedy videos. Meanwhile, I'm also a big biology geek who is obsessed with ants, so I built an internationally operating ant business supported by another popular channel called ANTSCANADA, and well basically, today I travel and tour around the world doing what I love so I wanted to start this vlogging channel, in hopes to encourage you guys to follow your dreams no matter how random, by showing you what happened when I followed mine! You just never know where life will take you when you listen to the yearnings of your heart!

After landing in Port Denerau we picked up Ashley's mom and immediately booked it to windward Lau Island group. This part of Fiji is considered the most remote in Fiji. There is no customs and immigration there hence our first stop on the main island. But hey, the harder you work for something the more it is worth it right? Well our first stop, the Bay of Islands, on Vanua Balavu, was a perfect first intro to the island group. It is breathtakingly beautiful with calm and secluded anchorages and millions of shallow little bays connected by tiny passages. It was like our own personal water world. What a start to this seasons tropical cruising! Sustenance living in the villages means every family and village has a garden and they provide well for themselves. With so much growing in abundance in the warm tropical climate we were able to trade just a little bit.

World war 2 battle of Peleliu (Palau): how it looks today!

VISITING THE BATTLEFIELD OF PELELIU (Palau)

Palau today is paradise on earth. It’s clean, diverse and clear waters offer the best diving in the world. Its forests and waterfalls offer amazing hikes. It’s green hills and island are post card perfect. It’s kind people will make you feel welcome. It’s therefore almost impossible to imagine that only 80 years ago this was hell on earth. But the traces of the bloodbath are there to be seen: all you need is curiosity and a good guide to show you these hidden historical treasures.

After winning the epic battles of Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Saipan the 1st Marine Division landed on the southwest corner of Peleliu (Palau) in September 1944. The US thought they now knew how to fight the Japanese on the islands in the Pacific: the recipe was massive naval bombardment of land-based targets followed by troops arriving on shore in waves, gathering on an island’s beaches until they had abilities and numbers to push inland.

The only problem on Peleliu was that Japan had learned their lessons too.

Here, the Japanese troops took on a new strategy: Peleliu’s many caves, connected by networks of tunnels, allowed the Japanese to dig in and hunker down and emerge to fight almost unscathed from the Allied bombardment. They held out for almost a week before U.S. forces were even able to secure the southwest area of Peleliu, including the key airstrip. When the Marines turned north to begin their advance towards the Bloody nose ridge, they were targeted along the way by heavy artillery fire and a fusillade of small arms from Japanese forces that had been installed in caves. Over the next eight days, U.S. troops sustained about 50 percent casualties in some of the most vicious and costly fighting of the Pacific campaign.
