The History of Burkina Faso
The history of Burkina Faso is a fascinating journey through the rise and fall of powerful empires, colonial rule, and a quest for independence and self-determination. The region that is now Burkina Faso was once inhabited by ancient civilizations, including the Mossi, Lobi, and Gurunsi, who established prosperous kingdoms and cultural legacies.
In the 19th century, European colonial powers began exerting influence over the area. The French established control over the region, known as French Upper Volta, in the 1958. During colonial rule, the people of Burkina Faso faced exploitation and resistance against oppressive policies.
The quest for independence intensified in the mid-20th century, and on August 5, 1960, Burkina Faso (then known as Upper Volta) gained independence from French colonial rule. Subsequent years witnessed a series of political changes, with periods of military rule and democratic transitions shaping the nation's trajectory.
In 1984, the country's name was changed to Burkina Faso, meaning Land of Incorruptible People, symbolizing a commitment to national unity and progress. Since then, Burkina Faso has faced various challenges, including political instability and security threats, but the spirit of resilience and determination continues to shape the nation's path towards a brighter future. As Burkina Faso strives to build a prosperous and harmonious society, it honors its historical roots while embracing the opportunities of the present.

A tour of a local market in Burkina Faso | WIDE

Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world nonetheless, it is also one of the most welcoming.

On this new trip, we take you to Gaoua in the southwest of the country, near the border with Côte d'Ivoire. Gaoua is a village whose inhabitants live far from the capital, Ouagadougou. The activity is partly ensured by small farmers who come to sell on the market products of their land. Very few tourists come to Gaoua and even fewer to the market.

A unique opportunity to discover what a local market in Burkina Faso looks like and what kind of wonderful delicacies one can cook with the local products!

The history of Burkina Faso | Burkina Faso documentary | World Of Knowledge ????

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa that covers an area of around 274,200 square kilometres and is surrounded by Mali, Niger; Benin, Togo, Ghana and Ivory Coast.

The July 2019 population estimate by the United Nations was 20,321,378.

The country's official language of government and business is French.

Roughly 50% of the population speaks the Mossi language natively.

A country called Republic of Upper Volta was renamed Burkina Faso on 4 August 1984 by erstwhile President Thomas Sankara.

Its citizens are known as Burkinabé .

The Republic of Upper Volta was established on 11 December 1958 as a self-governing colony within the French Community and on 5 August 1960 it gained full independence with Maurice Yaméogo as President.

After protests by students and labour union members, Yaméogo was deposed in the 1966 coup d'état, led by Sangoulé Lamizana, who became president.

His rule coincided with the Sahel drought and famine, and facing problems from the country's trade unions he was deposed in the 1980 coup d'état, led by Saye Zerbo.

Encountering resistance from trade unions again, Zerbo's government was overthrown in the 1982 coup d'état, led by Jean-Baptiste Ouédraogo.

The leader of the leftist faction of Ouédraogo's government, Thomas Sankara, was made Prime Minister but was later imprisoned.

Efforts to free him led to the 1983 coup d'état, in which he became president.

Phillipe is interested in how architecture can provide a glimpse into how people live all around the world. He travels to some of the most unique spots and culture on the planet to see what they have to offer. Starting off in Kandovan, a village in northwestern Iran, people here live in cones of rock created from thousand-year-old volcanic eruptions that are now carved out in what is called a troglodyte dwelling, some of the oldest dwellings in the world. He then moves onto northern Iran, Masuleh, an area of lush landscape, unlike the desert climate most of the country offers. In this small village, the roofs are all interconnected to form pedestrian areas. Through the rest of his journey he heads to Tiébélé in Burkina Faso to see the Royal Court of the Kassena people, Northern Togo’s Koufitigou region to discover the unique houses called takientas, a fortress-like home made of earthen materials and three regions in India to see the unique architecture that they call home.

The past few days in Antananarivo, Madagascar have been overwhelming, intense and eye-opening. And I apologize for the delays in posting these videos -- it's been nearly impossible to find decent enough wifi.

Madagascar, as a whole, is a beautiful tropical island with stunning greenery, giant baobab trees and unique wildlife (like lemurs!). It's also massive -- about twice the size of my home state of Arizona -- floating 250 miles off the southeastern part of mainland Africa.

But putting the natural beauty aside, Madagascar is one of the World's poorest countries, with the 5th lowest GDP per capita. Walking on the streets of Antananarivo, I couldn't help but observe and analyze what I was seeing --- people just barely managing to survive, working labor-intensive jobs with very little pay.

My new local friends and I took a mini road trip to some outer villages, where I learned about the daily life of people working in the markets. Here's what I discovered.

If there's any takeaway from today (and through travel in general) -- it is to appreciate the life I live. If you are reading this as well, consider yourself lucky because you have internet, which most of the people in Madagascar cannot afford.
