Oslo to Bergen, Norway by Train through the mountains and Boat through the fjords

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
We’re going to take you on one of the most spectacular train rides in all of Europe: starting in Oslo, we’re heading cross-country through fascinating mountain terrain, passing lakes and rivers and waterfalls, and then by boat through a vast fjord, finally we will be arriving later in the day at the ancient capital of Norway the town of Bergen. This special trip is called Norway in a Nutshell. Showing you a big cross-section of the country in just one day.
Please subscribe:
The scenery keeps getting more spectacular as we climb through the central regions of Norway, getting a little bit like Switzerland with tall mountains in the distance and glaciers, with lakes where the water is clear blue color.
We change trains mid-way at Myrdal and board the Flam railway which is one of the most scenic rides in Europe. It travels about four miles from the mountain tops down through seven lush valleys to the waters below in the Sognefjord, Norway’s largest fjord. There we catch a boat to Bergen through the Sognefjord. There's lots of great scenery during the boat ride, with the mountains towering high above on both sides of this chasm.

One of the most beautiful railways in the world has had one of its most successful summers on record. BERGEN, NORWAY | Best Things To Do In & Around Bergen

The city of Bergen is located along the southwestern coast of Norway. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, it’s a haven for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. But as a UNESCO World Heritage City, Bergen also combines history, culture, and an interesting urban life. This charming city might have a small-town feel, but it has tons of entertaining activities to offer. In this video, we break down our 6 favorite things to do in and around Bergen.

???? WHERE TO STAY IN BERGEN:
- Barfot Apartments (budget option with kitchen in center of town):

6. Try the local food
Norwegian culture is highly influenced by fishing and this is also visible in their cuisine. Visit Bergen’s fish market at the waterfront and you’ll see merchants selling their fresh catch of the day as they have for centuries. Other dishes Norwegians are proud of is “boller” (sweet buns) and “Pølse” (Norwegian hot dogs).

5. Visit a museum on a rainy day
Bergen has many interesting museums that you can visit, such as the Norway Fisheries Museum, the Lepra museum, and the Bergen University Museum of Natural History.

☑️ List of more museums:

4. Day hike to highest peak in Bergen municipality
Sitting between various mountains, Bergen naturally has plenty of great hiking terrain. At 987 meters tall, Gullfjellet is the highest peak in Bergen municipality and a classic for local hikers. Located a bit outside the city, this trail feels truly remote and is a great escape. The trail starts at Osavatnet and runs past a cabin (Redningshytten) on the way to the summit. To get to the trailhead, it’s best to rent a car or combine public transportation with a taxi ride.

3. Bryggen & the Hanseatic Museum
Bryggen is one of Bergen's most iconic and popular attractions. With its vibrant atmosphere, you will find plenty of things to do. You can stroll through the narrow, crooked alleyways, grab a local beer at one of the many cafés, and learn about its historic importance at the Hanseatic Museum. A free guided tour is included when visiting the museum, during which you get to know more about the Hanseatic merchants and their daily life at Bryggen.

☑️ Book your visit:

2. Hike one of the 7 peaks
Bergen is surrounded by seven peaks, and you can hike them all! The most popular ones are Mount Fløyen and Mount Ulriken, which are easily accessible by foot or bus from the city center. Both are short but steep hikes of a few kilometers each, offering spectacular views of the city, the fjord, and the ocean from the top. There is a cable car to Ulriken and a railway to Fløyen if you don't want to hike.

1. Fjord Cruise
Norway is known for its fjords, and so is Bergen. If this is your first time in Norway, make sure to go on a day tour of the fjords. Bergen offers a wide variety of guided tours, with Mostraumen being the most popular and accessible one. During a 3 hour cruise, you will see the varied western Norway fjord landscapes, consisting of steep cliffs and waterfalls. You eventually reach the Mostraumen Strait and the tiny village of Mo!

Four popular fjord cruises from Bergen, Norway

Oslo to Bergen, Norway by train along the stunning Bergensbana. A beautiful railway journey.

The train between Oslo and Bergen in Norway brings you along some pretty scenic landscapes, Europe's biggest mountain plateau, the Hardangervidda. It's not just a relaxed and sustainable way to travel between Norway's biggest cities, it's also one of the prettiest railway journeys you can imagine. Join me on board of the Bergensbanen where I'll show you Oslo Central railway station, the trains and the views from the train.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ ABOUT TICKETS ▬▬▬▬▬▬
You can book tickets on (make sure you only select trains and you select for the towns the names with station at the end, otherwise it doesn't work well) of on the website If a train is fully booked, you can try to split your ticket. The train is almost never 100% fully booked for the entire journey because people also might take this train for shorter sections of the route.

In general, if you book train tickets in advance, you have lower ticket prices (promotion fares). For fully flexible tickets, you'll pay the full price.

For this train tickets do always come including a seat reservation. I was traveling with Interrail, also for Interrail passengers it's obligaded to reserve a seat. In Norway there is no 1st class, however on some routes there is a kind of extra class, that's the pluss class om this route. For a Pluss class reservation the Interrail / Eurail surcharge is higher.

Because trains can be fully booked, the bus is the 2nd alternative to me. Busses can be booked (at least time tables can be found) via the Entur website as well.

Oslo to Bergen in Norway in a Nutshell | Most scenetic train journey in Europe | Fjords | Flame

Norway in a Nutshell: Oslo to Bergen tour might be one of the most famous rail and fjord tours in Norway. It will take you through UNESCO protected landscapes, mountains, and fjord areas.

If there’s one thing that you absolutely must do while you’re in Norway, it would be the Norway in a Nutshell excursion ;Without any sliver of doubt.

The journey begins with a train trip from Oslo to Myrdal. As we continued our journey to Bergen, the land became greener, the fjords higher, the mountain peaks snowier, and the water clearer...The further we travelled, the more beautiful the scenery became.

After 4:30 hrs of travel, we arrived in Myrdal and we changed trains for the Flåm Railway. This is where the landscape went from beautiful to mind-blowingly, insanely gorgeous.

This 20 kilometer long wild and steep train ride, has been mentioned in Lonely Planet Traveler as the best train journey in the world.

The train will now stop in front of a beautiful waterfall where you will see a lady dancing in a red dress.

After we arrived, Flåm,we boarded a cruise. By far, this was the most spectacular part of the tour, cruising through the fjords on deep blue, freezing water, past little towns built atop vibrant, green meadows and between sky-high, snow-dusted mountains. It does not get better than this.
even though it was a bit rainy, the scenery in this part of Norway was just INCREDIBLE.

Next, we arrived in Gudvangen and boarded a bus that would take us to the town of Voss.

End of the Norway in a Nutshell journey will be another train travel , this time from Voss to Bergen. You won't see any better scenery on this ride than you already have, so feel free to just sit back and relax for about an hour and 20 minutes.

After traveling with Norway in a Nutshell from Oslo to Bergen, I completely understand why this voyage is regarded as one of the most scenic train rides on the planet, and it should not be missed.

From beginning to the end, our journey from Oslo to Bergen stunned me. My jaw dropped an unthinkable amount of times in the presence of such unbelievably beautiful scenes that actually exist here, on our planet.

NORWAY'S MOST EPIC TRAIN TRIP ???? - OSLO TO BERGEN

The Bergen Railway ride from Olso to Bergen is one of the most scenic and beautiful rail rides in the world. The train travels for seven hours across some of Europe's highest plateaus, with spectacular views of Norway's scenery.

It passes through waterfalls, raging rapids of Voss, snowy peaks of Finse, and then the gateway to the fjords, Bergen. The scenery went from green fjords to winter white landscapes.

Once we reached Bergen Station, it was time to see the beautiful city of Bergen. The top activity in Bergen is the Ulriken Cable Car, which takes you to the top of Mount Ulriken, one of the seven mountains surrounding the city of Bergen. There are spectacular views of the harbor and the city center from above.
