In response to the new Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus and in an effort to stop the spread, the United States is restricting travel from certain countries in the African region exposed to the Omicron variant.
The new restriction started on 29 November 2021 and will remain in effect until terminated by the president.
The new rules come three weeks after the US lifted strict pandemic travel rules that prohibited entry to foreign visitors from the UK, Brazil, India, South Africa, and nearly 30 other nations.

Previously, citizens of banned countries can apply for National Interest Exception (NIE) to travel to the US.
The new rule also includes a provision that allows the secretary of state and the DHS secretary
to lay out criteria that would set forth an NIE for those travelling from one of the eight African countries.
The NIE is limited to those seeking to provide vital support for critical infrastructure or those who provide vital support or executive direction for significant economic activity in the US.

3:42 Testing for International Travel
The United States intends to toughen testing requirements for international travellers, including both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in a statement that officials are working on a plan that would require international travellers to be tested for Covid-19 within a day before their flight to the US.
Currently, fully vaccinated travellers can test for Covid-19 up to three days before their trip.
President Biden is also planning to extend the mask mandate until
mid-March.
Travellers are required to wear masks on airplanes, trains and buses and at airports and transit stations.

Italy has updated its Covid travel rules from the United States and other countries and will roll out new rules on December 6, 2021. It's new travel restrictions are in light of the rising cases and Omicron variant detected within its boards. What does that mean for travelling to Italy and to Europe with a CDC vaccination card or a EU green pass? The US President, Joe Biden, already last week toughened its rules for those entering the USA. Now Europe amid fears of a Europe lockdown is implementing several of its own rules with winter numbers going up thanks to the Delta variant and colder temperatures and now the Omicron variant.

Several countries acted on Friday to restrict travelers from southern Africa in an effort to slow the spread of a new coronavirus variant. South Africans complained the travel bans were unfair.

The discovery of a new and potentially more transmissible coronavirus variant by South African health authorities has sparked a forceful reaction across the world, with a number of countries banning travelers from several southern African countries.
The World Health Organization announced Friday it has designated the newly identified coronavirus variant, B.1.1.529, as a variant of concern, named Omicron.
Besides South Africa, the newly identified variant has been detected in Botswana, Hong Kong and Belgium.
It appears to be spreading rapidly in parts of South Africa and scientists are concerned its unusually high number of mutations could make it more transmissible and result in immune evasion.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said there is a high to very high risk the new variant will spread in Europe.
WHO's Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE), an independent group of experts, met Friday to discuss the variant, a WHO statement said.
The advisers recommended WHO designate the variant as of concern, referencing the variant's large number of mutations, the possibility of increased risk of reinfection and other evidence.
A number of studies are underway, and WHO will update member states and the public as needed, the WHO statement said.
WHO called on countries to enhance their surveillance and sequencing efforts to better understand coronavirus variants.
Initially it looked like some cluster outbreaks, but from yesterday, the indication came from our scientists from the Network of Genomic Surveillance that they were observing a new variant, Joe Phaahla, South Africa's Minister of Health, said Thursday, stressing it is currently unclear where the variant first emerged.
South African officials initially said there was one confirmed case in a traveler from South Africa to Hong Kong. Then Hong Kong health authorities on Friday identified a second case of the B.1.1.529 variant among returning travelers on the same floor of a designated quarantine hotel.
Also on Friday, the Belgian government said one individual who had recently arrived from abroad, and was not vaccinated, had tested positive for the new variant, marking the first case in Europe.
Tulio de Oliveira, the director of South Africa's Center for Epidemic Response and Innovation, said the variant has many more mutations than we have expected, adding it is spreading very fast, and we expect to see pressure in the health system in the next few days and weeks.
Viruses, including the one that causes Covid-19, mutate regularly and most new mutations do not have significant impact on the virus's behavior and the illness they cause.
Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University's School of Public Health, told CNN the variant was acting differently, however, and it looks like it's much more contagious than even the Delta variant.
A number of countries, among them the United States, have imposed new travel restrictions and markets in the US, Asia and Europe fell sharply following the news of its discovery.
Acting on advice from US health officials, US President Joe Biden will restrict travel from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi, administration officials told CNN.
This does not apply to American citizens and lawful permanent residents. As with all international travelers, they must still test negative prior to travel.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 27) — The government is discussing the possible expansion of the travel ban meant to prevent the spread of Omicron, a new COVID-19 variant of concern, a health official said Saturday.

She made the remark after being asked whether the country will also suspend inbound flights from Hong Kong since it has two Omicron cases.
South Africa, where Omicron was first detected, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, and Mozambique are currently included in the ban, which is in effect until Dec. 15.
Passengers who arrive before 12:01 a.m. of Nov. 28 despite staying in the abovementioned countries for the past 14 days will still be allowed to enter the Philippines. However, they will be subject to a 14-day facility-based quarantine.
Other countries also imposed new travel restrictions shortly after the world learned about the new Omicron variant.
While studies are ongoing to determine how dangerous Omicron is, some of its mutations are concerning, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Preliminary evidence also suggests an increased risk of reinfection with Omicron, as compared to other variants of concern, WHO added.
In light of the new variant, DOH's Ho reminded everyone that fighting COVID-19 variants is a shared responsibility. She advised people to get vaccinated if they have not yet done so and continue following the government-prescribed minimum health standards to protect themselves and their families.

England has added ten southern African countries to their red list and will reintroduce PCR tests and self-isolation until travellers receive a negative result.
The return of the red list comes after the Omicron variant was detected in South Africa and Botswana.
There are currently reported cases of the variant in the UK, The Netherlands, Germany, South Africa, Hong Kong, and Botswana.
Travellers arriving from South Africa and nine other southern African nations will now have to quarantine on arrival in the UK.

Day 2 PCR tests for everyone entering the UK will be re-introduced on 30 November and all arrivals will need to self-isolate until they receive a negative test result and all contacts of new variant cases will have to self-isolate for 10 days, even if fully vaccinated.
But Boris Johnson said Christmas would be considerably better than in 2020.

South Africa denounced the imposition of travel restrictions, calling it draconian, unscientific, and contrary to WHO advice.

There are no direct flights to Canada from the seven nations listed in the ban.
