TOP TIPS on Adjusting to Life in Portugal

Josh from ExpatsEverywhere sits down with Jim, a lawyer from the US, who decided to move his family to Portugal. Why did they decide to move? Was it because of money? Was it for a better work/life balance? He explains the reasons for moving and gives insight as to what that move was like with kids. He and his family live in Lisbon and have found the adjustment period difficult. They are still working on the language so Jim recommends finding someone to help you navigate the cultural and language barriers. He gives great tips on what things were like for their visa process, how to adapt and do things when you first arrive to Portugal, certain realistic things to expect, the pros and cons for a recent move from the US, and much more.

Oftentimes in life, things don't turn out as planned. We have ideas of how things should go, but the Universe will intervene, and instead take us down a different path, as if that's the experience we were meant to have.

Are there always lessons in that to be learned? Who really knows, but it's definitely a different version than what we had in mind.

Which is exactly what happened to us, as we traveled to the US to submit our Portuguese visas and then to Mexico to spend a couple of months awaiting the processing.

Boy, did things end up differently than we ever imagined!

Not only the experience itself of traveling through so many cities, but the fact that we came to realize that Portugal wasn't the right fit for us.

What followed will surprise you...

49 Strange Differences This American Noticed about Portugal!

#portugal #expats #americanexpats #algarve

As American ex-pats living in Portugal, we've noticed a number of differences between what we're used to in the United States and what things are like here. If you're moving to Portugal from the United States, we hope our observations can help you adjust to your new home faster than we did (though the adjustment was more good than bad, we promise). Some differences between life in the United States and life in Portugal are great. For example, it's so nice going to a grocery store that is located in a mall – it allows us to get all of our errands done in one spot.

None of the observations made are intended as criticisms. Just things we've noticed. After all, it'd be weird to go to another country and expect everything to be done like we're used to them being done in the United States.

If you're looking for more information on what it's like to live and travel in Portugal, be sure to check out our Americans Living in Portugal playlist:

You close your eyes for just a second to focus on the scent of the salty air, the fresh bread, and the orange blossoms…

The roar of the ocean gets louder as you approach the cliff, and the din from the town melts away.

The sea breeze is a little stronger in the morning, but it’s invigorating.

Reaching your favorite spot, your gaze captures the entire scene…

Glittering blue water flows gently onto a slice of pristine beach directly below you. To your left and right, almost impossibly, the same water crashes against the painted rocks in frothy white torrents.

The sandstone here has been battered this same way for a very, very long time—with its weird shapes, arches, and hidden coves, it looks almost alien.

Indeed, this is more than some postcard beach…

This is unique. Special. Better.

This could be what you experience every day if you retire in Portugal.
