Gorilla Trekking in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Almost half of the planet’s remaining mountain gorillas live within the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. It’s one of only three locations left in the world where people can see these critically endangered animals in the wild. Located in Southwestern Uganda, Bwindi covers 124 square miles (320 square kilometers) of mountain forests and jungle well-known for its rich biodiversity. Besides the iconic mountain gorillas, there are about 120 species of mammals, 300 birds, and 202 species of butterflies who all live amongst the 200 different tree types and 100 types of fern.

While the park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise (typical sightings of 150 species in a single day isn’t uncommon) and has more mammal species than any other of Uganda’s national parks, travelers come to this UNESCO World Heritage Site to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

After our recent gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, we realized that our trekking guides, their families, and the community were in desperate need of supplies. We have contacts with the local clinic and can send supplies directly to them. The people that protect and care for the last remaining 700 mountain gorillas in the wild also need our help. Without these women, men, and children who tirelessly watch over these majestic animals, gorillas in the wild will go extinct. Please help the gracious community who do not have the resources they need for basic health, schooling, playtime. There aren't any deep-pocket NGOs supporting this community. They fund their own school and clinic both of which are completely drained of all imaginable resources. Remember, buying something off of this list will go directly to all the people we met in the Kahurire Village in Uganda.

⚡️ Looking for a complete itinerary for backpacking Uganda?

⚡️ For all travel guides about Uganda -

Winston Churchill once said that Uganda is the Pearl of Africa and now I can see why.

Not gonna lie, I was pretty ecstatic when I realize that I will be visiting Uganda in 2021. Since I first started traveling the world way back in 2014, it had always been a dream of mine to visit Uganda and go gorilla tracking to see these magnificent primates in their habitats with my own eyes.

There is not a whole lot of them left in the world with the current population of only around 5,000 and you can only find them in the remote mountains of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo.

Back then, I was never able to justify the trip to go gorilla tracking as it isn't exactly cheap with the permit costing over 800 USD but now that I have the means to do so and a personal mission to share off-the-beaten-path places around the world to you all, I decided to bite the bullet and finally made it happened.

After several hours of flight and a 9 hours drive from Entebbe, I finally arrived in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to many families of mountain gorillas. We spent a few hours tracking down gorillas and we eventually found a family of them hanging out not too far from the park's HQ.

We spent an hour with them and it was one of the most memorable and surreal moments of my life. They were so similar to us it was like looking into the mirror. It was both bizarre and magical at the same time.

I also spent a few weeks exploring other places in Uganda like canoeing the scenic Lake Bunyonyi, visiting Jinja and the source of the mighty river Nile, as well as going off the beaten path, and hiking around Sipi Falls in the east.

With this 3 minutes travel video, I hope you will be able to get a feel of what it is like traveling in Uganda, how surprisingly green and hilly the country is, how lovely the people are, and hopefully, you will understand by Uganda is truly the Pearl of Africa.

Location: Entebbe, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Jinja, Lake Bunyonyi, and Sipi Falls

Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge in Bwindi

Multi-award-winning Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, located in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is an epitome of bush luxury. If you're organising a Uganda safari that includes gorilla trekking, you out to ask your safari manager to include this lodge on the properties you have to stay in.

The lodge is set on a ridge with a 360-degree view of the pristine jungle, the jungle ravine, the Virunga Volcanoes across the southwestern Uganda-Rwanda-Congo border and rugged southwestern Uganda.

The lodge is just a 5-minute walk from Nkuringo Trailhead and a 30-minute drive from Rushaga trailhead.

Explore Uganda | Wildlife & Nature | Earth Adventures

Discovering Uganda: Embark on this majestic journey with me through one of the top 3 countries (Congo, Rwanda & Uganda) with a native resident gorilla population. We were lucky enough to witness these marvelous creatures in Bwindi National Park, going about their daily lives as we got in pretty close proximity to them (while still keeping enough distance not to disturb nature from taking its natural course).

We were also fortunate enough to witness the mischievous chimpanzee, getting a bit frisky with one another ;)

Uganda boasts a vast array of wildlife. Besides witnessing these amazing primates, we were also able to encounter the beautiful and lithe leopard in Murchison Falls National Park.

Watch the video to see just how amazing this experience was!

GOPRO 4K - Uganda & Rwanda (2019): Kampala, rafting the Nile, mountain gorillas, and Kigali

Navigating the hustle and bustle of urban Kampala - the epitome of East Africa's population explosion.
Grade 5 whitewater rafting on the white Nile - the most extreme rapids a non-professional can go on.
Trekking with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat - only 1,000 left in the world, all are only found in this region (border of Uganda, Rwanda, and the DR Congo), and can only be seen in the wild as they cannot be kept in captivity. Exploring Rwanda's capital, Kigali - incredibly clean and much more modern than most may think. No wonder they call it the 'Singapore of Africa'. Then had a lay-over in actual Singapore on the way back.

Tips:

East Africa:
-bring plenty of USD, tours and hotels give discounts
-there's security checkpoints everywhere (malls, hotels etc)
-powerbanks, mosquito repellent
-be prepared to do your own laundry
-need Yellow Fever vaccination certificate to get in/out of many countries

Kampala:
-get around on SafeBoda motorbike taxis (don't even need to download app just flag them down)
-central/Gadafi mosque for good view of city
-Bahai temple worth visit (only 7 in world), don't let you take photos/videos though
-walk around old Kampala in morning, try 'rolex with 2 eggs' for breakfast
-The Lawns Wild Game BBQ restaurant for all sorts of game meat
-Acacia mall for modern shopping needs

Rafting on Jinja:
-highly highly recommend grade 5 full day extreme rafting at
-So well organised and beyond the adrenalin, the Nile scenery is stunning
-bring sunscreen with you - there's another boat where they'll store it for you
-actually, wear long sleeves as you get sun burned so much
-water is slow on many parts of the Nile so expect lots of rowing!

Gorilla tour in Bwindi Impenetrable national park:
-went with Monkey Adventures ($1.3k USD) for 3 day tour (day 1 mostly drive from Kampala to Bwindi area, day 2 gorilla trek, day 3 Bunyonyi lake and drive back)
-I arranged to get driven to Kigali (quite close to Kabale, near gorilla area) instead of back to Kampala
-wear gum boots, bring rain coat
-there's chance you won't get to see gorillas, in that case they offer you to come back next day for free so keep next day free just in case

Kigali:
-get around on motorbike taxis, very safe and they quote fair price. city is small so good to walk too
-start with genocide memorial, makes you appreciate how fast and far the country has transformed since
-rooftop bar on top of Ubumwe Grand Hotel
-Shokola storytellers cafe behind Kigali library
-convention centre nice in early evening
-try fish tacos at The Hut

Scientific Gorilla Tracking Post Lockdown (Gorilla Trekking Uganda)

In this video, I take you into my experience tracking mountain Gorillas in Bwindi a world heritage site in Uganda.
Aside from the ever green vegetation cover in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP), I couldn't resist appreciating special works done to conserve nature and Gorillas in south western Uganda.

We had a fun drive from Kampala to Kanungu district where slept in a lodge in the immediate vicinity of BINP offices awesomely built and maintained by Uganda Wildlife Authority.

After a 20mins brief the following day, we set off to a location of the Gorilla family we were assigned to track. In about 45mins deep into the forests, we were able to start the trek in lookout for the already spotted location of the Habinyanja family.

Enjoy the video and see how it all went and let me know in the comments your thoughts.
Here is a copy of the blog post:

The trip couldn’t be any better without the help of our amazing tour guide Davis from Chimpanzee tours and travel.

Why You Have To Visit Mountain Gorillas In Africa

Visiting the Mountain Gorillas in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is a life changing experience. I met a complete group of mountain gorillas, including the silverback and a newborn baby. The trekking was an hour and a half and we spent about one hour with the group.

You have to keep your distance, but the young gorillas came to me several times. They don't mind us being here. It was magical to see these majestic apes of Africa, which share 98% of our DNA.

On the way to the animals I learnt to speak gorilla. The guide showed me how to do it. It is a noise to let the silverback know he is the boss. You can hear me on the video making that noise a lot. A visit to the mountain gorillas is expensive, but definitely worth the money. Your money is spent to pay the park rangers and keep the gorillas safe. So, when you visit Rwanda, do it. You won't regret it.
