Monsaraz ė uma povoação fortificada medieval construida após a reconquista Cristã para a consolidação da fronteira alentejana. O rei D.Afonso III tinha ido para sul e reconquistado todo a parte a sul do Tejo até ao Algarve em 1249, faltava agora proteger e consolidar a fronteira de todo este território para nascente. Muitas destas zonas fronteiriças anteriormente à reconquista, estavam ameaçadas pelas ofensivas árabes e foram confiadas às Ordens Militares. O castelo com as suas 5 torres tem início no reinado D.Afonso III com a participação dos Templários. No reinado seguinte D.Dinis constroi a Torre de Menagem e toda a cerca urbana. No reinado seguinte D.Fernando constroi a cortina interior de separação da alcaçova do castelo com o casario da vila Tal como em Nisa e outras vilas de fronteira alentejana, esta é uma Bastide, ou seja, uma vila planeada, seguindo um padrão geométrico. Isso aconteceu não só em Portugal, mas também no sul de França, leste da Alemanha, sul da Itálica e Secília e também na fronteira entre Aragão-Navarra em Espanha. Eram regiões pouco povoadas e de instabilidade política, recentemente conquistadas. Esta vila é de facto de visita obrigatória, não tanto pela arquitectura religiosa, mas sim pelos exemplares de arquitectura tradicional alentejana preservados. Na década de 1930 a vila estava a ficar em ruina e desertificada. Em 1946 a DGEMN classifica esta Vila como património Nacional e decreta uma Zona Especial de Proteção ZEP, ou seja, na prática ninguém pode construir nada sem a apreciação oficial, sendo a única forma de ter o património histórico preservado para futuras gerações. Só em 1955 é que o estado executa o restauro de Monsaraz, mas é esse restauro e a classificação como monumento nacional que dão a qualidade e visibilidade que Monsaraz tem actualmente. Na Porta da Vila estão esculpidas várias medidas utilizadas para comercio, leis e construção : a Vara e a meia Vara entre outras A Casa da Inquizição, é uma antiga casa do século 17 com um painel de azulejos da mesma época. Esta seria a casa de alguém ligado ao Santo Ofício de Évora. A Igreja matriz foi construída no séc. XVI e veio substituir a anterior que por ser pequena não permitiu o sepultamento dos habitantes que morreram durante a peste. O interior é interessante pelas suas proporções quase quadradas. A alcaçova do castelo foi transformada em praça de touros em 1830. Antes tinha poço e cisterna, casa do alcaide e armazens. No baluarte voltado a nascente Esta Ermida é o monumento mais antigo de Monsaraz sendo inicialmente um edifício fúnebre, ou um pequeno santuário muçulmano do domínio almóada (séc. XI-XII) que foi mais tarde convertido numa ermida cristã dedicada ao padroeiro dos Templários e Hospitalários : S.João Baptista. A ermida de S.Bento foi fundada com os donativos dos moradores de Monsaraz no séc. XVI. #monsaraz #alentejo #portugal #arquitetura

Hoje o destino é uma vila medieval cercada por uma muralha e guardada por um imponente castelo na região do Alentejo, ao sul de Portugal, já bem próximo da fronteira com a Espanha, às margens do rio Guadiana, represado pela Barragem de Alqueva. Estamos falando de Monsaraz, mas é preciso não confundir com Reguengos de Monsaraz!
Daqui, é possível ter uma vista panorâmica das planícies alentejanas, tão marcadas pelos seus campos dourados, oliveiras e sobreiros (ou chaparros), que são as árvores das quais é extraída a cortiça.
Monsaraz tem uma rica história, muito caracterizada por vitórias militares, conquistas e reconquistas, além de resguardo das fronteiras portuguesas frente ao então reino de Castela. Com uma posição estratégica, ao longo dos tempos, o castelo de Monsaraz teve uma função histórica de defesa, protegendo a integridade territorial e a soberania de Portugal.
Esta construção do século XIII não só é muito bonita, mas também impecavelmente preservada! Dá mesmo pra sentir uma atmosfera de Idade Média por aqui...

In The Mood for Alentejo: Part 1 | Underrated Region in Portugal | Evora & Monsaraz
This is Alentejo, a rural, sparsely populated region in Portugal that's quietly whispered between conversations about Portuguese destinations. Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, all seem to be winning laurels, but Alentejo is winning hearts. It's the largest region in the country, covering about a third of entire mainland Portugal, and offering vast swathes of farmlands, idyllic countryside, from flatlands to rolling hills, from ancient cities to magical, untouched villages overlooking horizons of incredibly vast landscapes.
On the first part of this Alentejo series, I explored the mystical city of Évora, the gateway to the Alto Alentejo (Upper Alentejo), discovering the city's ancient charms, Roman structures, gothic cathedrals and grisly catacombs. And then went beyond the city to explore one of the most breathtaking hilltop villages I've ever seen, the magical Monsaraz, the village near the sky.

Monsaraz Alentejo Portugal: Defensive Hilltop Town
An AV of the beautiful hilltop town of Monsaraz in Southern Portugal. We stopped off for a couple of hours on a trip down to the Algarve and wow, this place is a must see! High on a hill with a 360 degree view of the surrounding fields, river and the Spanish border. I'm determined to go back and stay over night, for dawn and dusk images, as the photographic potential here is considerable.

Alqueva Lake is the largest artificial lake in Europe, located in the Alentejo region of Portugal. O Lago Alqueva é o maior lago artificial da Europa, localizado na região do Alentejo, em Portugal. Este impressionante corpo de água foi criado pela construção da barragem de Alqueva no rio Guadiana. The Alentejo Region in Portugal has some elegant towns to explore. Public transport is extremely limited, and even a taxi might get you stuck in these remote locations. You will need to rent a car to travel to these areas.
Corval de Pedro is a cute little town outside of Evora. It is around a 30-minute drive from Evora, so it's not too bad of a drive. When I was out this way, there had been quite a bit of rain. So, the grass was extremely green, and the weather was much milder than the summer heat of 100+ degrees F/40+ degrees C.
Monsaraz is about another 15 minutes away from Corval de Pedro and an elegant location. I hope to explore this area more as I did not get to see the lake up close and personal.

The transport to the winery is refrigerated, to preserve the characteristics of the fresh and ripe grape, where it will then be subjected to a highly controlled winemaking process. It is also in the cellar that technology and modernity, knowledge and tradition are combined.
