MUST DO IN ICELAND | Blue Lagoon & Snorkelling in Silfra

It's our first epic day here in Reykjavik, and we are just ticking off the bucket list items here in Iceland. First up we go and snorkel between two continents at Silfra which is quite possibly the coldest and clearest waters we have ever snorkelled in...

...and after a few hours on the phone to our travel insurance company we gave up on seeing what we can claim to go out and spend some time in the must do day trip - Blue Lagoon...which we can say lives up to the expectations.

We drove to Thingvellir National Park to a rift called Silfra which is a fissure between the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates. The water is nearly freezing, but we swam in it for an hour! Wearing drysuits for the first time was a fun experience and made the snorkel trip so much better. The water was unbelievably clear. This was definitely one of the best adventures we took in Iceland!!!

Silfra Snorkeling Between Two Tectonic Plates | Explore Iceland

Snorkeling or scuba diving in the Silfra fissure is an experience not to be missed. With year-round temperatures of 2-4 degrees, the water never freezes due to the constant current powered by the small spring that fuels the lake. This water is glacial and has been filtered over thousands of years to produce one of the clearest dive sites in the world; 100m deep with the immense walls of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates towering alongside.

Silfra Fissure - Dive Between Two Continental Plates

Silfra Fissure is the only place where you can dive or snorkel directly in the crack between two continental plates and is the clearest water on earth.

Silfra Fissure is located in Thingvellir National Park in Iceland, the Silfra dive site is approximately 60 kilometres (a 45-minute drive) from Reykjavik.

The Silfra fissure, is known as one of the top dive sites in the world for two main reasons.

First, the Silfra fissure is actually a crack between the North American and Eurasian continents, meaning that you dive or snorkel right where the continental plates meet and drift apart about 2cm per year.

Secondly, the underwater visibility in the Silfra fissure is over 100 meters, which creates an underwater experience that will rarely, if ever, be surpassed.

The reasons for this astounding water clarity are twofold: the water is cold (2°C – 4°C year round ) as it is melt water from the nearby Langjökull Glacier and this water is filtered through porous underground lava for 30-100 years until it reaches the north end of Thingvellir lake, seeping out from underground wells.

The Silfra water is as pristine as water can get and you can drink it at anytime during your dive or snorkel.

Thanks for watching.

#1 SILFRA SNORKEL ????
Silfra is located in Thingvellir National Park. We did an absolutely fantastic snorkeling tour at Silfra. Silfra is the crack in the Earth created by two tectonic plates. We used the company, Dive.is and they provided us with a guide, all of the equipment and suits, and entrance into Thingvellir National Park.

#3 JOKULSARLON GLACIER TOUR ????
Jokulsarlon is a glacial lagoon in southeast Iceland. The lagoon is filled with icebergs from Europe's largest glacier Vatnajokull. We took a zodiac boat tour around Jokulsarlon so that we could get up close to the giant glacier and icebergs. The company we used for the tour was Arctic Adventures. They provided the wetsuits for our trip and the bus ride to the lagoon.

04:09 Beer Spa
#4 BEER SPA ????
The Beer Spa or Bjórböðin is a unique experience that is so relaxing. Our beer spa experience started out with relaxing in their outdoor hot tubs. After the hot tub, it was our turn for the beer spa. The tub is filled with water, beer, hops, and yeast. There is a beer tap so you can drink cold beer while bathing in hot beer. The bath lasts for 25 minutes and then we headed to the relaxation room for another 25 minutes.
The Beer Spa -

05:21 Whale Watching
#5 WHALE WATCHING ????
Whale watching in Iceland is very popular in the cute village of Husavik. We went whale watching with North Sailing. Unfortunately we didn't see whales in Husavik, so we tried again the next day in Hjalteyri and we were successful! We saw a family of pilot whales and a humpback whale.

Fagradalsfjall VOLCANO HIKE ????
Although the volcano wasn't erupting on our first attempt, we tried again on our last day in Iceland and got to see fantastic eruptions.
❗Watch the full VOLCANO HIKE video
HERE: ➡️

WATERFALLS ????
SELJALANDSFOSS
Seljalandsfoss is such a special waterfall because you can actually walk directly behind it.
SKOGAFOSS
Skogafoss is one of Iceland's biggest waterfalls. We were so lucky when we arrived at Skogafoss because it was a sunny day, so we could see a rainbow.
❗Watch the full WATERFALL TOUR video
HERE: ➡️

BLACK SAND BEACHES ????
REYNISFJARA BEACH
Iceland's most famous beach is definitely Reynisfjara. You can't swim in the water because the current is very strong, but it is so popular because of its unique black sand. The sand gets its color because of volcanic ash.
DIAMOND BEACH ????
Diamond Beach is located right by Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. It is a black sand beach that is famous for the icebergs that wash up along the shore. The icebergs look like diamonds sparkling along the beach.

Iceland Tips: Diving & Snorkeling Silfra Fissure

Diving or snorkeling in Silfra is not only a must-do when you go to Iceland, it's a solid idea for your travel or life bucket list. Located in the middle of a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Silfra Fissure is a deep water crack in earth between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It's the only place in the world where you can dive between two continents. So cool - literally and figuratively! The crystal clear, blue, pristine fresh glacier water is a frigid 33-39 degrees Fahrenheit year-round (2-3 degrees Celsius).

This mesmerizing travel video will show you what it’s like under the “sea” - through the blue lagoon from Silfra Hall to Silfra Cathedral. You can also see the bright green “troll hair” algae, which is the only marine life in Silfra. Definitely make sure to add Silfra to your list if you are planning a trip to Iceland. Basically a form of liquid meditation - It’s one of the coolest (and coldest!) things I’ve ever done.

SILFRA - Diving and Snorkeling site in Iceland

SILFRA, BETWEEN THE CONTINENTS
The Geology of Silfra
Silfra is a fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates in Thingvellir National Park. The rift was formed in 1789 by the earthquakes accompanying the divergent movement of the two tectonic plates. The diving and snorkeling site at Silfra is right where the two continents meet and drift apart about 2 cm per year. Silfra is the only place in the world where you can dive or snorkel directly in a crack between two tectonic plates.

The earthquakes of 1789 opened up several fissures in the Thingvellir area, but the Silfra fissure cut into the underground spring filled with glacial meltwater from the nearby Langjökull glacier. The water is filtered through porous underground lava for 30-100 years before reaching the spring that feeds into Silfra. The water is therefore extremely pure by the time it reaches the north end of Thingvellir lake and it allows for underwater visibility of over 100 meters in Silfra. The glacial meltwater remains very cold in Silfra, but as fresh water is constantly filling the fissure, the water never freezes and remains 2°C – 4°C year round. The underwater visibility of the water in Silfra will rarely, if ever, be surpassed. Silfra is said to have the clearest water in the world; feel free to have a sip of this pristine water at any point during your dive or snorkel.

As Silfra is right at the crux between the tectontic plates, it is a very “living” dive site in that it is constantly undergoing changes, both large and small. The fissure widens incrementally, but more drastic changes to the depth profile have occurred during earthquakes in which boulders and rocks fall into the crack. This shifting of the earth creates new tunnels, caverns, and underwater terrain.
On our Diving Silfra Day Tour we offer the PADI Silfra Tectonic Specialty Course, where we dive deeper into the geology of Silfra.
