Lisbon is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Europe. After exploring Portugals capital for altogether more than a week I want to use this video to give you a few recommendations of things to do in lisbon that are more off the beaten track.
With these alternative things to do in Lisbon you get away from the busy touristic hotspots of the city and get to know another side of the Portugals capital!
There are many more alternative things to do in the area of Lisbon, therefore I decided to split them up in 2 videos. So...In the next episode I’ll introduce you to Cascais which is just a 30 minute drive from central Lisbon and awaits with a number of impressive sights as well as some great spots for surfing.

Lisbon is a vibrant capital city, located in western Portugal on the estuary of the Tagus River. As one of the oldest cities in western Europe, Lisbon has a rich, turbulent history. By the 15th century, the port of Lisbon became one of the most important in the world. But unfortunately, the city center was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. Today, it has been reconstructed into a bustling modern city blended with traditional heritage. In this video, we highlight 10 awesome things to do in Lisbon:
10. Try the traditional food
Things to try include: bacalhau à brás, pastéis de bacalhau, bifana, bifinhos com natas e cogumelos, ginjinha, pastéis de nata

A 7km route connects Martim Moniz Square with Campo Ourique, while passing through Lisbon’s most historic districts. We recommend starting your journey at Campo Ourique and riding it until the end.
8. Experience Fado and the nightlife at Bairro Alto
Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre, known for its expressive and melancholic sound. Recommended bar: Tasca do Chico
7. Visit St. George’s Castle
Castelo de São Jorge stands on top of the tallest hill in Lisbon and served for different purposes throughout history.

Lisbon's best viewpoints include: Santa Luzia, Portas do Sol, São Pedro de Alcântara, and Monte Agudo.

There are a few things you can’t miss: Torre de Belém, Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Tropical Botanical Gardens, Pasteis de Belém bakery, and the Jerónimos Monastery.
4. Walk around the Alfama District
Another great thing to do in Lisbon is to stroll around the Alfama District. This neighborhood was the only one to survive the 1775 earthquake, making it the oldest area of Lisbon.
3. Go on a sunset cruise on the Tagus River
During a two-hour sailing adventure you’ll pass under the iconic San Francisco-lookalike bridge and take in the views of the most impressive monuments in Belém and the historic center.

20 Things to do in Lisbon, Portugal Travel Video Transcript:
We feel like we know this city well, so in this Lisbon travel guide we’re going to show you around what we think are some of the best attractions. We only had 3 days in the city this time around, so this Lisbon itinerary will be perfect for any of you visiting on a long weekend escape.
We kicked off our first morning with a ride on Lisbon’s most iconic tram line:#28 bound for panoramic vistas and a hilltop castle. After postcard perfect views looking down over Alfama we went towards the castle, with a little detour offering a bit of street art.
St George Castle is a Moorish castle that looks down over the historic centre and the Tagus River. It’s one of the main tourist landmarks in the city and you get great views of Lisbon.
We circled back to visit the Jeronimos Monastery. Construction of this monastery was ordered by King Manuel, who selected the religious order of Hieronymite monks to occupy the monastery.
Pastéis de nata were created by the monks at the Jerónimos Monastery, and seeing as we were right next door, this was a very logical stop. After browsing at the Sunday Market we walked over to the Santa Justa Elevator, which is the only street lift in Lisbon for public service.

In the history of Lisbon there are several before and after. The most important event was certainly the earthquake of 1 November 1755 when a series of violent shocks, followed by a tsunami, destroyed a large part of the city.

The fact is, however, that from the rubble of the earthquake emerged a city even more beautiful than it was, with a sui generis charm that in the following centuries was an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists and writers.
The successful democratic transition, in addition to returning the Portuguese nation to Europe, gave Lisbon back the international prestige it deserved, and which still characterizes it today compared to the rest of the country.
