KIRIBATI: THE COUNTRY THAT'S DROWNING

“There are developing countries and endangered species. The Republic of Kiribati is a dying country. Lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, this little paradise seems destined to be swallowed up by global warming. A country which is afraid of disappearing, is in the process of buying land from its neighboring country in order to be able to move all its population there… The international negotiations on the climate are not advancing…”. These words are those of Julien Blanc-Gras, a globe-trotting journalist and writer, who has returned with a new book, his 4th, entitled 'Paradise before liquidation'. Here, he evokes a land endangered by climate change. In today's video, we are going to talk about the Kiribati Islands, an endangered country.

Kiritimati or Christmas Island is a Pacific Ocean raised coral atoll in the northern Line Islands, and part of the Republic of Kiribati.

The island has the greatest land area of any coral atoll in the world: about 322 square kilometres (124 sq mi); its lagoon is about the same size. The atoll is about 150 km (93 mi) in perimeter, while the lagoon shoreline extends for over 48 km (30 mi). Christmas Island comprises over 70% of the total land area of Kiribati, a country encompassing 33 Pacific atolls and islands.

Kiritimati Island (Christmas) is well known for its world class bone fishing.[4] It also has excellent birdwatching and surfing opportunities.[5]

It lies 232 km (144 mi) north of the Equator, 6,700 km (4,200 mi) from Sydney, and 5,360 km (3,330 mi) from San Francisco. Christmas Island is in the world's farthest forward time zone, UTC+14, and Christmas Island is one of the first inhabited places on Earth to experience the New Year each year (see also Caroline Atoll, Kiribati). Despite being 2,460 km (1,530 mi) east of the 180 meridian, a 1995 realignment of the International Dateline by the Republic of Kiribati moved Christmas Island to west of the dateline.

Nuclear tests were conducted in the region around Christmas Island by the United Kingdom in the late 1950s, and by the United States in 1962. During these tests islanders were not evacuated. Subsequently British, New Zealand, and Fijian servicemen as well as local islanders have claimed to have suffered from exposure to the radiation from these blasts.

The entire island is a Wildlife Sanctuary; access to five particularly sensitive areas (see below) is restricted.

The name Kiritimati is a rather straightforward respelling of the English word Christmas in Gilbertese, in which the combination ti is pronounced s, and the name is thus pronounced [kəˈrɪsməs].

RCM72 side event: Mental health

The WHO definition of health encompasses complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Protecting and promoting mental health ensures the foundation for wellbeing throughout the life-course. It is key to enabling people to fulfill their potential, maintaining resilience and productivity, and engaging meaningfully with their community.

For the future: Towards the healthiest and safest Region articulates WHO’s vision of public health and its priorities for the years to come. It highlights mental health, across the different thematic priorities, as a significant public health issue.

As part of the 72nd Meeting of the Western Pacific Regional Committee held in Himeji, Japan, a session on mental health was organized on 27th October 2021.

The panel discussion featured decision makers, policy makers, service providers and people with lived experience from Australia, China, Japan, Kiribati, and UNICEF.

Panelists shared their views and perspectives about future directions, including promising frontiers in mental health. Interventions revolved around three main themes which are the foundations of a new Regional Framework for the Future of Mental Health in the Western Pacific:
Refocusing towards mental well-being and reaching the unreached, with innovations and solutions generated from the ground up to match the needs of communities.

Transforming mental health care with the optimal mix of services, building up human resources for mental health and enhancing quality improvement.

Embedding mental health into the settings of daily life, where communities are empowered with tools and structures that enhance protective factors and reduce risk factors across the life course and promote mental health beyond the health sector.

On the afternoon of 4 November, VisitScotland delivered an international-facing event that was attended by 185 online delegates from 50 countries around the world, from Norway and Vietnam to the US and Mauritius.

The event, led by our Industry & Destination Development directorate, enabled an interactive forum to capture the opportunities and challenges of achieving net zero in tourism.

We partnered on the event with Tourism Declares, The Future of Tourism Coalition and NECSTouR, a network of 39 European tourism authorities committed to sustainability.

Earlier in the day, the Glasgow Declaration for Climate Action in Tourism was launched, an initiative to galvanise the global travel and tourism industry to commit to a decade of climate action.

This afternoon event was designed to build on this and create a dynamic opportunity for leading tourism stakeholders around the globe to highlight good practice and innovation on the journey to net zero, while exploring the actions, enablers and barriers to achieving it. None of us individually hold all the answers, but collectively we can share our knowledge and accelerate climate action.

Environmental Transformation - Changes Through Photography

Eddo Hartmann, Netherland
The Collective Landscape

The Netherlands is known for its efficient agriculture systems but unfortunately it comes with a cost. Until recently, arable production systems on Dutch land were mainly created for their efficiency, while ecological functions were not taken into account. In fact, it is the world’s second agricultural export country, after the United States. In order to maintain this extremely high level of production on this tiny piece of earth, farmers use enormous amounts of pesticides and fertilisers. As a result the landscape has become more homogenous, sterile and empty over the past five decades. Recently we are facing more and more problems and we are not able to make a sustainable choice.

Mathias Braschler and Monika Fischer, Switzerland
“The Human Face of Climate Change”

Mathias Braschler and Monika Fischer traveled to every continent and visited 16 different countries to meet people who are directly affected by the consequences of climate change. They shot environmental portraits and recorded video/audio interviews to give these people a voice. The men and women they met told in their own words how changes in the climate have affected their lives.
In this talk Mathias and Monika tell about their experience meeting all these people around the globe who are experts in climate change because they live so close to nature and observe the acceleration in changes from a unique perspective.

Travel writing a disappearing Oceania—w/ J. Maarten Troost: Reversing Climate Change podcast S2E9

One of the many tragedies of the climate crisis is that the people least responsible will be the first to suffer. Among the regions where this is playing out is in the atoll nations of Oceania,  an area of small islands in the Pacific where it feels ‘more like being on a boat than a continent.’

J. Maarten Troost is the travel writer behind such titles as The Sex Lives of Cannibals, Getting Stoned with Savages and Headhunters on My Doorstep. He spent multiple years in Kiribati in the Equatorial Pacific as well as Fiji and Vanuatu. On this episode of the Reversing Climate Change, Maarten joins Ross to explain how he came to spend time in the region of Oceania and offer insight around the provocative titles for his books and the egalitarian nature of island culture.

Maarten goes on to describe how climate change is impacting the area, explaining why these atoll nations will be uninhabitable within 30 years and what the people there are doing to prepare for this inevitability. Listen in to understand why Maarten is pessimistic about our ability to make systemic change before it’s too late and hear his take on the role of the travel writer in the age of climate change.

Key Takeaways

[1:20] Maarten’s take on the term Oceania

Refers to islands of Pacific, South Pacific
More like being on boat than continent

[2:05] How Maarten came to travel in the region

Adventurous work as journalist in Prague
Mundane job as temp after grad school
Girlfriend got work opportunity in Kiribati

[6:24] Why Maarten chose provocative titles for his books

Racist overtones in previous books about region
Titles designed to mock Victorian mindset

[8:51] The egalitarian nature of island culture

Someone asks for something, you give it to them
Must work as team to survive

[10:28] How climate change is impacting the Pacific

King tides cover entire islands (without storm)
Coconut trees near shoreline dead from salination
Gardens only work in middle of island now
Atoll nations uninhabitable in next 30 years

[14:41] The two schools of thought in the region

Some believe God will take care of people
Others making plans to migrate to Fiji

[17:05] Why adaptation is not an option in Oceania

Atoll = finite space
Islands will be gone by 2100 with 4° increase

[18:23] Maarten’s take on so-called ‘climate porn’ tourism

Guilty of it himself (travel to Africa to see rhinos in wild)
Glaciers, atolls and certain animals will disappear

[20:11] Maarten’s pessimism re: our ability to make systemic change

Carbon emissions still on rise despite need for drastic drop
Not creating political infrastructure to mitigate climate change

[22:03] The connection between human progress and temperature

Human civilization around for 300K years
‘Didn’t do squat’ until 10K years ago when temp stabilized
Hasn’t deviated by more than 1° since then

[26:08] The role of a travel writer in the age of climate change

Travel as source of personal meaning won’t go away
Experience something novel that changes us for better

[31:19] What makes a good travel writer

Develop voice that resonates with people
Brings out ‘the human’ in any setting

[35:32] What Maarten is working on now

Some consulting work
Collaborating on TV show

[36:59] The tragedy of the loss of islands in Oceania

People among least responsible for climate change
Unique culture on each island will disappear

[39:01] Maarten’s take on social media

Creates environment of misinformation, conflict
Tweeting dumb thought can destroy life in seconds
