KIRIBATI: THE COUNTRY THAT'S DROWNING

“There are developing countries and endangered species. The Republic of Kiribati is a dying country. Lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, this little paradise seems destined to be swallowed up by global warming. A country which is afraid of disappearing, is in the process of buying land from its neighboring country in order to be able to move all its population there… The international negotiations on the climate are not advancing…”. These words are those of Julien Blanc-Gras, a globe-trotting journalist and writer, who has returned with a new book, his 4th, entitled 'Paradise before liquidation'. Here, he evokes a land endangered by climate change. In today's video, we are going to talk about the Kiribati Islands, an endangered country.

Tarawa Atoll, Kiribati, Pacific Ocean - the 3 major challenges facing Kiribati (Tarawa Atoll) in the Pacific Ocean. Let's go to the Republic of Kiribati (also known as the Tarawa Atoll or the Gilberts islands) and let's take a tour of this rarely visited island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean. Not only we will see some spectacular scenes from Kiribati (the Tarawa Atoll), but, we will examine the 3 huge challenges the nation of Kiribati is facing: Population explosion, garbage and rubbish environmental catastrophe and finally, yes, the rising sea levels.
Kiribati, an island republic in the Central Pacific, comprises 33 coral atolls and isles stretching along the equator. With lagoons and white-sand beaches, many of its islands are uninhabited, offering a remote setting for fishing, diving and bird-watching. The crowded capital, South Tarawa, made up of small islets, retains remnants of WWII battles fought on its shores, and is known for folk dancing and handicrafts.

MAP OF KIRIBATI

greetings my friends. this is a map of Kiribati. Kiribati consists of 32 atolls and one solitary island , (Banaba), extending into the eastern and western hemispheres, as well as the northern and southern hemispheres. Its extensive exclusive economic zone covers three, non-contiguous, traditional geographic subregions: Banaba , (Melanesian-Micronesian area), the Gilbert Islands , (Micronesia) and the Line and Phoenix Islands , (Polynesia). The groups of islands are:

Banaba: an isolated island between Nauru and the Gilbert Islands
Gilbert Islands: 16 atolls located some 1,500 kilometres north of Fiji
Phoenix Islands: 8 atolls and coral islands located some 1,800 kilometres southeast of the Gilberts
Line Islands: 8 atolls and one reef, located about 3,300 kilometres east of the Gilberts
Banaba , (or Ocean Island) , is a raised-coral island. It was once a rich source of phosphates, but was exhausted in mining before independence. The rest of the land in Kiribati consists of the sand and reef rock islets of atolls or coral islands, which rise only one or two metres above sea level.

The soil is thin and calcareous. It has a low water-holding capacity and low organic matter and nutrient content—except for calcium, sodium, and magnesium. Banaba is one of the least suitable places for agriculture in the world.

Kiritimati , (previously Christmas Island), in the Line Islands is the world's largest atoll. Based on a 1995 realignment of the International Date Line, the Line Islands were the first area to enter into a new year, including year 2000. For that reason, Caroline Island was renamed Millennium Island in 1997. The majority of Kiribati, including the capital, is not first, for example New Zealand has an earlier new year. thats all. please comment and subscribe for the best maps. goodbye.

Kiribati Tours

Kiribati Tours: Curving its way above and below the equator, the Republic of Kiribati (pronounced Kiri-bas) encompasses the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands, and was known under British rule as the Gilbert Islands. Measured by land size Kiribati is a tiny nation of just over 810 sq km, but its 33 atolls span a huge 3.5 million sq km of the Pacific. Most atolls surround turquoise lagoons and barely rise above the surrounding ocean, so its rare to be out of the sight and sound of the sea.

Kiribatis recent colonial and WWII history has had little impact on the outer islands, where the people subsist on coconuts, breadfruit and fish as they have done for centuries. Even on the main island, Tarawa, most locals live in traditional raised thatched huts. Western influence is increasing, though, in the form of cars, bars, movies and the Internet, and inevitably theres an escalating urban drift from the outer islands to Tarawa.

The people of the islands are known as I-Kiribati. Wide-eyed children may chirp a bold mauri (hello) to passing strangers, while their elders tend towards a laconic raise of an eyebrow in greeting. Nothing happens fast here, so wind down, relax and enjoy living on island time.

Enjoy Your Kiribati Tours!

COPRA FACTORY
The only significant industry in Kiribati making products for export is copra – that is processing the flesh of coconuts. People across many of the outlying islands of Kiribati make their living by collecting coconuts which grow naturally; the flesh is then sun-dried and sent to the factory in Betio for processing.
HIGHEST POINT ON TARAWA
One of the most famous sites on South Tarawa is the highest point on the atoll. You’re unlikely to need hiking boots or suffer from altitude sickness since it’s only 3 metres above sea level.
Taiwan Park
Taiwan park is most popular in Kiribati.
KIRIBATI PARLIAMENT
Kiribati is a huge country covering an area roughly the size of India – except that most of it is open ocean. Three times a year, the elected representatives from all over the country make the long journey to Tarawa to meet in the parliament building which is built on an artificial island
DRINK LIKE A LOCAL
Making use of limited natural resources is important in Kiribati, and one way people do this is by making a small cut in a branch of a palm tree and hanging a bottle underneath so that the tree sap runs down into the bottle. The resulting liquid has various uses, including being fermented to make a form of palm wine known as karewe. This lightly alcoholic drink isn’t really legal to sell so you do typically need a local contact to get hold of some, besides a strong stomach!

My country will be underwater soon -- unless we work together | Anote Tong

For the people of Kiribati, climate change isn't something to be debated, denied or legislated against -- it's an everyday reality. The low-lying Pacific island nation may soon be underwater, thanks to rising sea levels. In a personal conversation with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Kiribati President Anote Tong discusses his country's present climate catastrophe and its imperiled future. In order to deal with climate change, there's got to be sacrifice. There's got to be commitment, he says. We've got to tell people that the world has changed.<img src= height=1 width=1 alt=/>

KIRIBATI
