What To Do In Vientiane Laos | Travel In Laos

For this travel in Laos video, it goes into things to do in Vientiane Laos. I was in Vientiane for a little less than a week. I went to see Pha That Luang, Patuxai, Doi Ka Noi, Night Market, Talat Sao, and ate a lot of Lao food. There are a lot of things to do in Vientiane and many attractions to visit so make sure you spend your time wisely. After seeing the main attractions, I went vlogging and captured moments of my friends outdoor Lao kitchen and then we got to eat amazing fermented khao poon. I end my time in Vientiane by finding a stall that served delicious khao piek. I hope you all try traveling to Laos and enjoy these Vientiane attractions!

We had an unexpected 24 hours here so we thought we would find out the top things to do in Vientiane. A search for the Top things to do in Vientiane actually didn't show up much, but we did find that there were a few interesting sights to see.

This was all in the lead up to our journey from Vientiane to Luang Prabang by bus. The trip actually turned out to not be that bad and travelling from Vientiane to Luang Prabang Sleeper Bus style does work out quite nicely.

We have since been told that travelling by bus from Vientiane to Luang Prabang is lovely in the day because of the view, but we were happy to sleep through most of the journey.

Laos Travel Guide

Hey, guys. So today's video on the tiny Southeast Asian nation of Laos. I'll be taking you through the must-see places and experiences in the backpacker's haven of Vang Vieng.

- Upon entry to Laos, you must certainly pay a visa that usually costs around $36 depending on your nationality
- You'll mostly likely land in the capital, Vientiane
- It's a sleepy city not worth staying in, so take the long 4 hour bus to Vang Vieng from the terminal
- Buses depart between 7am - 2pm
- Vang Vieng is known for outdoor activities as it is naturally blessed
- Stay at Vieng Tara Villas - it's a stunning place
- Take the steep 30-minute hike up to the Pha Ngern Viewpoint
- Cool off at the Blue Lagoon and enjoy the outdoor grilling scene
- For nightlife, check out Sakura Bar in the main town
- The currency used in Laos is Lao Kip; $1 = roughly 8,800 Kip
- Be advised that Laos is communist and has certain regulations on tourist behavior. Act respectfully

Khob chai, amigos.

10 Things To Do in Vientiane, Laos on your VACATION!

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Vientiane is the capital city of Laos but many visitors here say that it feels more like a small village than a bustling central hub. Vientiane has a relaxed and serene vibe to it and you will find a number of attractions here that make it the perfect place to spend a few days before you head off to other places around the country.

Welcome to ThingsToDo Channel, today we’re going to list 10 things to do in Vientiane.

Explore the Lao Textile Museum.

This small museum used to be privately owned by a local family who also own the Kanchana Boutique. Nowadays however it has morphed to become one of the key cultural sights in Vientiane and is located around a gorgeous little Laotian compound. Here you will find a typical wooden house which is filled with ancient weaving tools and looms, and there are also antique textiles here that represent the various ethnic groups in Laos. If you want to get hands-on them you can also take a textile painting class.

Go on a cycling tour.

Bicycle touring around Vientiane has become increasingly popular in recent years and you can now sign up for a tour with several companies like Vientiane ByCycle. You can usually opt for half-day or full-day tours and a local tour guide will take you around the city to out of the way spots such as villages, temples, and markets.

Check out the National Ethnic Cultural Park.

The National Ethnic Cultural Park is on the outskirts of Vientiane and is known for having models of traditional houses that represent all the different ethnic groups in Laos. You can tour the different houses at the park as well as check out some statues of dinosaurs and visit the small zoo here.

Go for a massage.

Laos is known for its local massage technique which uses herbal sauna and steam rooms. Local plants and herbs are boiled in a traditional Laotian bathhouse in a sealed room to create a steamy environment and this is then followed by a relaxing massage.

Admire Wat Si Saket.

Wat Si Saket has the claim to fame of being the only surviving temple in Laos from before the invasion of Siam in 1828. Unfortunately, much of the city was razed to the ground at this time, but the temple managed to avoid being demolished and you can come here to check out the 5,000 sculptures of the Buddha for which it is also famous.

Discover Wat Si Muang.

Wat Si Muang is one of the most popular temples in Vientiane and is a great place to visit if you want to see some of the finest Laotian Buddhist design work in the country.

Learn some history at the Lao National Museum.

If you want to know more about the history and culture of Laos, then you need to head to the Lao National Museum, also sometimes referred to simply as The National Museum. The museum is actually housed inside a building that was constructed during the French colonial period and you will find a huge number of interesting exhibits on sale here.

Eat at Vientiane Night Market.

Vientiane Night Market is located along the scenic waterfront in the city. The market usually gets going around sunset and you can come here to buy a range of items like clothes, textiles, accessories, handicrafts, paintings and myriad souvenirs.

Stroll around Patuxai Victory Monument.

Patuxai Victory Monument is one of the best-known landmarks in Vientiane and was designed to resemble the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It is however also carved with symbols of Hindu Gods and has an additional five towers which resemble traditional Laotian buildings making this something of an East meets West kind of attraction. The monument is part of the wider Patuxai Park and this is a great place to come if you want to go for a serene walk at sunset. You can also take in the views across Vientiane from the top of the Patuxai Victory Monument either by climbing a set of stairs to the viewing platform or using an elevator.

Xieng Khuan.

Xieng Khuan is also known as Buddha Park and is some 25 kilometers outside Vientiane. As you would guess from the name, it is known for having more than 200 religious statues which are scattered all over the lush grounds. The piece de resistance here is a sculpture of a reclining Buddha which is some 40 meters high and the park was the brainchild of a monk who designed the area in 1958 and who was interested in both Hindu and Buddhist sculpture, which is why you will find a mix of different influences here. As you walk around to make sure to look out for the sculpture of Indra who is atop a three-headed elephant and who is considered to be the king of the gods in Hinduism.

Local Street Vendors in Vientiane Laos

Street vendors are an integral part of urban economies around the world, offering easy access to a wide range of goods and services in public spaces. These #StreetVendors i'm going to show in this video sell everything from fresh vegetables to prepared foods.

Most of them provide the main source of income for their households, bringing food to their families and paying school fees for their children.

Street vendors create jobs, not only for themselves but for porters, security guards, transport operators, storage providers, and others.

See in Vientiane is the capital of Laos.
=========================
Lao National Museum (Revolutionary Museum ພິພິຕະພັນແຫ່ງຊາດ), Thanon Samsenthai (next to Lao Plaza Hotel). 08:00-12:00, then 13:00-16:00. Update as of May 2019: the old national museum on Thanon Samsenthai is closed now. There is a new national museum a few km away but it isn't opened yet. This means as of now you can't visit any national museum. Formerly the Lao Revolutionary Museum by name, the historical exhibits on the first floor are modest though very interesting in depicting some of the early history. They include one of the original Jars from the Plain of Jars and various stone and bronze age implements. The second floor provides us with a great insight into the 18th Century Laotian Kingdom and the customs of the day. It would appear that the Loatians didn't treat their guests quite as well in those days, often keeping them from leaving the country for several months. The floor builds up to a fervently revolutionary pitch as it documents the heroic struggle of the Lao against the Siamese (Thai), French and American imperialists. Exhibits include items such as socks worn by Politburo members when they escaped from prison and Kaysone Phomvihane's chest expander. The final rooms, on post-revolutionary Laos, are mostly a photo gallery of pressing topics such as the comrades of the 7th Plenary Session of the Laos People's Congress inspecting fertilizer production processes. The final rooms provide an insight into some of the modern advancements, though these are fairly dowdy and uninspiring. A guestbook regularly features amusing arguments between young western visitors on the subject of communism. Most exhibits are labelled in English, though some French labelling remains, occasionally to the exclusion of English. Foreigner: 10,000 kip, Laotian: 2m000.

A local rendition of Paris' Arc de Triomphe. Besides the elaborate Buddhist embellishment, it differs from the original in having four gates instead of two and being just a bit higher (to trump the French). Reasonably impressive from afar, a surprisingly frank English sign inside the monument labels it a monster of concrete when seen up close - and the concrete in question was donated by the US, although it was supposed to go towards a new airport instead: hence the nickname the Vertical Runway. The monument itself aside, the palm tree-lined park around it complete with fountains is quite pleasant though lacking of shade during the day time. You can climb up to the 7th story for a nice view of central Vientiane and three levels of souvenir shops with less than enthusiastic sales people sitting about. Features a musical fountain nearby that attracts visitors from around Laos and Asia, as well as a World Peace gong presented by Indonesia. Roving cameramen will be happy to charge you for photos near these attractions. 3000 kip (to climb).

COPE Visitor Centre, Khou Vieng Road (1km from Talat Sao (Morning Market) Opposite Green Park Hotel), 09:00-18:00. The Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise, or COPE, is a local not for profit organisation that provides orthotic, prosthetic, rehabilitation and advocacy services for survivors of UXO accidents and other people with disabilities in Laos. During the Vietnam War (1964-1973), conflict spilled over into Laos in a secret war where more than 500,000 bombing missions dropped over two million tons of ordnance on the country. The COPE Visitor Centre provides visitors with the opportunity to understand the impact of UXO on Lao PDR, issues related to disability in developing countries and the work of the COPE project through a free permanent exhibition.

The Art of Silk, Manthatourath Road, Lao Women's Union, ☎ 7719798 or 2202547. Mon-Fri 9am-4pm. A local magazine says Phone before visiting as there is no permanent staff. free(?).

Kaysone Phomvihane Museum, km6 Dongdok Road, ☎ 911215. Tue-Sun 09:00-16:00. Museum about Kaysone Phomvihane. Foreigner: 5,000 kip, Laotian: 2,000 kip.

Lao People's Army History Museum, Kaysone Phomvihane Road, Ban Nongsangthong, ☎ 900662. Tue-Sun 08:30-16:30. Museum about the army. Foreigner: 5000, Laotian: 2000.

Memorial of president Souphanouvong, Kaysone Phomvihane Road, Ban Phonsa-art. Tue-Sun 08:30-16:00. Foreigner: 5000, Laotian: free.
