Svalbard Global Seed Vault Norway seed from all the world is hold there Google Earth Map

info from:

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Norwegian: Svalbard globale frøhvelv) is a secure seed bank on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen near Longyearbyen in the remote Arctic Svalbard archipelago, about 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) from the North Pole.[4] Conservationist Cary Fowler, in association with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR),[5] started the vault to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds that are duplicate samples, or spare copies, of seeds held in gene banks worldwide. The seed vault is an attempt to insure against the loss of seeds in other genebanks during large-scale regional or global crises. The seed vault is managed under terms spelled out in a tripartite agreement between the Norwegian government, the Global Crop Diversity Trust (GCDT) and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen).[6]
The Norwegian government entirely funded the vault's approximately NOK 45 million (US$9 million) construction.[7] Storing seeds in the vault is free to end users, with Norway and the Global Crop Diversity Trust paying for operational costs. Primary funding for the Trust comes from such organisations as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and from various governments worldwide.

The Doomsday Seed Vault, officially known as the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, is a remarkable facility located on the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, approximately 1,300 kilometers from the North Pole. Often referred to as the Doomsday Vault, its purpose is to serve as a global repository for seeds, safeguarding the genetic diversity of vital food crops in the event of a global catastrophe.

Conceived as a collaborative effort among the Norwegian government, the Global Crop Diversity Trust, and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault was officially opened on February 26, 2008. Its remote location was chosen strategically to ensure the preservation of seeds even in the face of natural or man-made disasters, such as war, climate change, or other catastrophic events that could threaten global agriculture.

The facility is situated within a mountain on the island of Spitsbergen, providing natural insulation and permafrost conditions that help maintain a consistently low temperature, ideal for seed preservation. The vault's design includes multiple security layers, including blast-proof doors and motion sensors, to protect its precious contents.

The primary objective of the Doomsday Seed Vault is to store duplicate samples of seeds from gene banks around the world. These seeds represent a diverse array of essential crops, ranging from grains and vegetables to fruits and herbs. By preserving a wide variety of seeds, the vault acts as a global insurance policy, ensuring the availability of genetic resources for future generations and potential post-catastrophe rebuilding efforts.

The seed vault operates under the principle of free and equal access to all countries and organizations contributing seeds. It does not claim ownership of the deposited seeds, and withdrawals are only allowed by the contributing gene banks or seed repositories in the case of a documented need, such as the loss of seeds from their own collections.

Since its inception, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault has received contributions from countries worldwide, making it a truly international initiative. The ongoing commitment to preserving the world's agricultural biodiversity highlights the significance of this facility in safeguarding the foundation of global food security and resilience in the face of uncertain future challenges. The Doomsday Seed Vault stands as a testament to human foresight and collaboration in the pursuit of ensuring the sustainability of our planet's vital resources.

Polar night EXPLAINED | Four months of darkness on Svalbard

Svalbard globale frøhvelv / Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Norwegian Language) - Unravel Travel TV

Deep inside a mountain on a remote island in the Svalbard archipelago, halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, lies the Global Seed Vault. It is a fail-safe seed storage facility, built to stand the test of time and the challenge of natural or man-made disasters. The Seed Vault represents the world’s largest collection of crop diversity. Worldwide, more than 1,700 genebanks hold collections of food crops for safekeeping, yet many of these are vulnerable, exposed not only to natural catastrophes and war, but also to avoidable disasters, such as lack of funding or poor management. Something as mundane as a poorly functioning freezer can ruin an entire collection. And the loss of a crop variety is as irreversible as the extinction of a dinosaur, animal or any form of life. It was the recognition of the vulnerability of the world’s genebanks that sparked the idea of establishing a global seed vault to serve as a backup storage facility. The purpose of the Vault is to store duplicates (backups) of seed samples from the world’s crop collections.

Permafrost and thick rock ensure that the seed samples will remain frozen even without power. The Vault is the ultimate insurance policy for the world’s food supply, offering options for future generations to overcome the challenges of climate change and population growth. It will secure, for centuries, millions of seeds representing every important crop variety available in the world today. It is the final back up.

Del 2: Roland von Bothmer, Senior Advisor, Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
