SWAKOPMUND, NAMIBIA: Africa's MOST BEAUTIFUL Town? Travel Guide to ALL SIGHTS

Welcome to Namibia! And welcome to part 3 of an incredible road trip through one of the least populated countries in the world. This country about 1,5 time the size of France mainly consists of desert landscape. In the previous two episodes we traveled along the coast of South Africa from Cape Town, to visit the first highlight of the country and the absolute number one sight: the Sossusvlei. After that we drove through no man's land to the industrial port city of Walvis Bay. We spotted flamingoes crossing the dunes in the endless desert and visited pink salt lakes.

In this episode we continue the drive along the coast to another tourist hot spot on the ocean shore. The town of Swakopmund is the most beautiful preserved colonial town, with a lot of German influences. The architecture is outstanding, but Swakopmund has more to offer. It's the beating heart of Namibian culture. We also visit the National Marine Aquarium, some shipwrecks on the so called Skeleton Coast and thousands of seals at Cape Cross. Up next will be Etosha National Park for some safari drives.

Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Then you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia and the Philippines. Zanzibar and Tanzania are already destination number 21 on the big trip. We have also been away from home for a year. Follow us on this world tour, first in Tanzania, from Zanzibar to the safari parks on the mainland and then to many more beautiful destinations in Africa! We still travel non-stop all year and film everything, with a new episode every week. Also take a look at instagram @woutoftheworld or

Magnificent Sossusvlei red sand dunes in Namib--Naukluft Park, Namibia, Southern Africa

Aerial and ground video of red sand dunes in Sossusvlei area of Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia, southern Africa.

#Sossusvlei #Namibia #SouthernAfrica

Sesriem & Sossusvlei:

Extreme landscapes of the Namib Desert - The world's highest dunes.

Namibia is a country of almost-superlatives. The second-least densely populated country in the world is also one of the newest, and is home to some of: the largest dunes, the darkest skies, the oldest cultures, the biggest conservation areas in Africa, the world's last rhinos and the most complex languages on the planet - to name but a few!

In this weekly blog series we explore some of Namibia's extremes, and share with you practical information on how you can come and discover them for yourself.

Taking on Big Daddy
Sossusvlei is surely Namibia's most iconic landscape. The rust-red dunes, bleached white pans and deep blue sky are instantly recognisable, and symbolise the country's vast, dry, uninhabited expanses. The dunes here are some of the highest in the world, and the tallest in this area - at a whopping 325 m - is the appropriately named Big Daddy.

The more popular - and widely photographed - Dune 45 is just 80m high, but people still like to climb the monster Big Daddy for two main reasons: firstly, because it overlooks the surreal landscape of Dead Vlei, a white pan filled with the dark fossils of camelthorn trees, and secondly because climbing Big Daddy gives you ultimate bragging rights.

Sossusvlei (sometimes written Sossus Vlei) is a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia. The name Sossusvlei is often used in an extended meaning to refer to the surrounding area (including other neighbouring vleis such as Deadvlei and other high dunes), which is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia.
The name Sossusvlei is of mixed origin and roughly means dead-end marsh. Vlei is the Afrikaans word for marsh, while sossus is Nama for no return or dead end. Sossusvlei owes this name to the fact that it is an endorheic drainage basin (i.e., a drainage basin without outflows) for the ephemeral Tsauchab River.

Namib Wüste: Sanddünen in Namib Naukluft National Park inkl. Deadvlei, Sossusvlei

The highest sand dunes in the world in the Namib Desert in Namibia were the highlight and the real reason for our trip to Namibia again. A visit to the Dead vlei at sunset, the flooded Sossus vlei, the bright green Sesriem Canyon, the fascinating Elim Dune, the world-famous Dune 45 - one highlight follows the other when visiting the Namib Desert and time flies by.

Although we spent twice as long as on our last trip to the Namib Naukluft National Park, we haven't discovered everything yet and look forward to returning some day.

You can find impressions from our last trip in our Namibia / Botswana video:

Slowly but surely we are approaching the end of our video series about our road trip through the Namib Desert. Which country will we introduce next?
