9 Norwegian Words that can help you to understand Norway better.

Understand Norwegian lifestyle, culture and traditions better with these very Norwegian words.
The Norwegian language has some pretty neat words that don’t really exist in English at all – or any other language, for that matter. Here you will find 9 Norwegian words, like for example, friluftsliv or koselig. The last one is a classic. Far from meaning simply “cosy”, it’s the appropriate adjective for pretty much any nice, pleasant, likeable, and/or friendly person or situation. Add the intensifier “skikkelig” (as in “skikkelig koselig”), and you’ll pass for a true Norwegian.

What is your favourite Norwegian word?

What NOT to Do in Sweden | Avoid These 10 Mistakes!

Swedish people are often polite and friendly, and they don't show their dislike very openly. But there are some things that Swedes HATE above all others! Avoid these pitfalls if you visit Sweden.

This list includes some common and some more unexpected items. They might be especially unexpected if you come from a very different culture compared to the Nordics and Scandinavia.

These are the ten things discussed in this video:

10. Buying a round of drinks for everyone at the table. It might sound like a common thing to do, but you should be wary of that in Sweden.
9. Asking about people's salaries. This is still a very taboo topic in Sweden, so avoid it.
8. Boasting is rude in almost every culture, but it's especially rude in Sweden due to the Law of Jante (Jantelagen).
7. If you mix up Sweden and Denmark, or Sweden and Norway, then you've really gone and annoyed us Swedes...
6. Don't stand on the wrong side of the escalator. Really. This is something only extremely ignorant or rude people do.
5. Many people are atheist or agnostic in Sweden, so discussing your religion is seen as....quite odd.
4. It's common to speak loudly in many cultures. Sweden is NOT one of those cultures.
3. Give people some space! Do not walk too close to people.
2. Here's a silly one that I just had to include: don't talk about the Finnish hockey team. We've been beaten a few too many times by them.
1. And finally, the most important thing not to do: do not EVER cut in line. Seriously. Don't even think about it.

How Norway Destroyed My Sea Sami Culture And Identity

Based on my broken childhood as native Norwegian I tell the story in a satirical way of the intervention by the Norwegian authorities in all parts of my upbringing. It controlled the way we ate, decorated, washed, cleaned, thought and said – and it crawled all the way into my dreams and believes. All social situations in the family, between me and my granny were poisoned by the Norwegianization. In this hysterical and sarcastic video, you will learn more about five efficient methods that were used to erase the Sea Sami culture.

The Sami people are native, indigenous people of the Nordic countries, including parts of Russia. For several centuries, the Norwegian authorities have pursued a harsh and brutal Norwegianization policy. The goal was for all Sami to become Norwegians and forget, keep quiet and hide their Sami identity, language and religion. Today, only a few groups of reindeer herding Sami have retained their original culture and customs. While my tribe, the Sea Sami, was completely and effectively crushed and ruined after the second World War.

The sad and quite comical thing was that my poor grandmother had to be Norway's representative and police authority when it came to my transformation from a fish loving Sea Sami to a boring and lax Norwegian. Of course, she only had a vague idea of what being a Norwegian was, since she herself was a Sea Sami deep inside. But she tried to fake it as best she could. This is our tribute of her and her struggles.

The consequences of the Norwegianization in my childhood, performed by my loved ones who pretended to be Norwegian were a total mess. I spent my childhood desperately trying to be something me and my family really had no clue about. The result: We never got it right. It just got weird and cringe. This is the hilarious and self-deprecating story of how I was Norwegianized.

In this video full of sketches, Mads is the Norwegian authorities. Which never give us peace. No matter what nice things my grandmother and I do together, Mads comes in and destroys the situations with cruel punishments. Ronald is humiliated with the Norwegian flag and the national anthem. He is beaten, whipped and stabbed. You can see that Mads enjoy playing this authoritarian and creepy role.
This is fiction and dramatized content.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Sailed Norwegian Cruise Line

When it comes to the major cruise lines, there's what I consider the big three -- Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian. There are a lot of similarities between those three, but if I'm being honest, NCL stands out as an outlier from the other two.

The cruise line has a lot of things going on that I didn't realize until I sailed multiple times across different ships.

I'm talking about things like how the atmosphere on the ship is different than other rivals... how your day in port isn't a guarantee... and how one of the most popular sales in cruising has some fine print to know.

Travellers from all over the world dream of seeing: fjords, glaciers, waterfalls, and small wooden houses against the backdrop of all this. 10 Things To Do in Norway after the Pandemic

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Norway is one of the most affluent countries in Europe, so you can expect high-quality facilities if you travel here such as a good range of public transport options. Norway is also known for being incredibly safe, so it’s a good option for solo female travelers who can travel around the country with ease. Blessed with a fascinating history, you certainly won’t be short of activities here, from museums to other attractions such as glaciers.

Welcome to ThingsToDo Channel we publish new content every day, so be sure to subscribe and don't forget to ring the bell to be updated on our latest videos.

Let’s explore ten things to do in Norway.

Take a train journey.

Norway has some great rail routes which are comprehensive and easy to use, so one of the best ways to enjoy the country is by train. There are over 2,000 miles of tracks here and the scenic journeys mean that you get to take in Norway from an entirely different perspective.

Explore Mount Floyen.

If you want to get the best vistas across Bergen then you need to come to Mount Floyen which is a 399-meter summit that overlooks the city. If you are feeling lazy you can easily take the funicular railway to the top which takes 8 minutes and affords you views over Bergen and its notable fjords.

Visit Oslo Cathedral.

Oslo Cathedral is one of the main draws in the city and would have been built in its original form in the 11th century. The style of the church is baroque and it was the first church to have ever been established in Norway.

Take a ferry.

Another great way to check out the country is to take a trip on the Hurtigruten ferry which will take you to some of the less explored parts of Norway.

Explore the Geirangerfjord region.

Geirangerfjord is part of the massive Fjord Norway Network and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stretches across many miles but some of the highlights include Alesund in the north which is known for its icy Norwegian scenery.

Marvel at the Arctic Cathedral.

The Arctic Cathedral is the work of a Norwegian architect called Jan Inge Hovig and dates from 1965. As a result, this is one of the newer cathedrals in the country and is built in a dramatic style. The structure is meant to look like large blocks of ice and you will find sparkling mosaics inside as well as the iconic façade which is made of glass and marked with a large crucifix. During the wintertime, the cathedral is lit up from the outside making it appear even more spectacular.

Tour Akershus Castle.

Akershus Castle was built during the medieval period in 1299 and was meant to protect Oslo from an enemy invasion. Over the years it has taken on many uses including operating as a renaissance castle and a prison in more modern times. Now it is used by the Norwegian Ministry of Defense and you can visit and take in some of the pretty rooms here such as the banquet rooms and the chapel.

Visit the Arctic Circle.

Many people don’t realize that much of Norway is located in the Arctic Circle and this means that it is the best place to look for the Midnight Sun. This natural phenomenon happens every year around the summer solstice when the sun never sets and it is permanently day time. Another key feature of the Arctic Circle is the presence of the famous Northern Lights which are made by particles from the sun entering the earth’s atmosphere.

Travel along the Atlantic Ocean Road.

A trip along the Atlantic Ocean Road in Norway is not to be missed. The route spans 5 miles of rugged yet spectacular coastline and will take you past charming fishing villages as well as picturesque sights like ancient churches. There is a set route you can follow as this is now one of the top attractions in Norway and one of the main points of interest is the iconic Troll’s Church Cave.

Go skiing in the Lyngen Alps.

The stunning Lyngen Alps are located in the Arctic Circle and encompass a mountain range that stretches for 90 kilometers to the border with Sweden. The area is covered in fjords, glaciers, and rivers and you will find soaring peaks as well as scenic gorges. Popular pastimes in the Alps include dog sledding or signing up for a snow safari, and there is also a high chance of seeing the northern lights here.
