Guatemala City- Travel Day with Kids

Our kids loved this charming town - Antigua Guatemala #familytravel

After staying in our favorite hotel in Guatemala - Hobbitenango we drove down the volcano slope to a magical little town of Antigua Guatemala.
It is a popular tourist attraction that hasn't been really discovered yet.
We loved the ruins, the architecture, the authentic feel to the town but the people are the ones that truly stole our hearts.
Every moment in Antigua made us fall more in love with Guatemala.
We met a group of students from IMEPCEP school in Villa Nueva, Guatemala.
Antigua Guatemala has only one McDonald's in town and it's the most beautiful McDonald's we've ever seen! Check it out!

3 Day Family Trip to Guatemala Vlog! Visit Antigua and Lake Atitlan!

In November 2018, we made a very random and impromptu plan to travel to Guatemala. This country had never been on our bucket list. We had never even remotely thought about it as our travel destination. We were just searching for cheap tickets for a quick 3 day trip, and we found great flight deals for Guatemala City from Houston. After consulting a Guatemalan coworker, we were directed to Nahual Tours, a tour company based in Guatemala, that specializes in organizing guided tours of various parts of the country. They have many different packages to choose from. The tour guides are very friendly and helpful! Our guide was Rodrigo Chun, and he was a lot of fun and very considerate.

We landed in Guatemala City, but we did not stay there. We were very short on time, so we could only fit in so much to our trip. After visiting the beautiful country, we have realized there are so many things we still have to do and see there. On our future bucket list in Guatemala is Tikal, the famous Mayan Ruins. Also, very high on our list is the tour of Volcan Pacaya. We would love to revisit Antigua and enjoy the cobblestone streets, the colorful colonial buildings and the lush greenery!

Here are the names and links of the places mentioned in the video, should you want to more info:

Antigua Guatemala Travel Guide - Step Into Europe in Central America | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to Antigua Guatemala, a colorful and elegant little town in Central America.

It is a small city that used to be a part of the Spanish colony. Famous for its well-preserved Baroque-influenced architecture, as well as colonial churches ruins, it used to be the capital city. After a hazardous earthquake in 1773, the Spanish crown decided to move it to a new place which is today known as Guatemala city. Some people refused to leave and what was left was renamed into “Antigua Guatemala” meaning Old Guatemala.

Today, it only has around 30 000 inhabitants, but it is a calm and cultural place with the buildings of vivid colors, clean cobblestone streets and breath-taking architecture, very popular for tourists. It is a really cute place which is also under UNESCO’s protection.

Walking around the city, there are views of the imposing Volcán de Agua to the south and the twin peaks of Volcán de Fuego and Acatenango to the west. There are many lined with farm-to-table restaurants, contemporary art galleries, and design studios. The whole town seems so sophisticated, but in such an unusual way, since it is a combination of vivid colors, Spanish culture, rich history, and Guatemalan spirit and surrounding nature.

With its booming coffee scene and boutique hotels, Antigua is quickly garnering appeal as one of the most alluring cities in Central America and we can now see why.

Exploring Colonial Antigua, Guatemala with kids

We are going to jump ahead here a few months because we are now traveling in Central America. I'll go back and finish the last couple from Ireland and some from Montana and Wyoming in a bit but I wanted to get these next couple from Antigua, Guatemala up because we've been having such a good time.
Antigua is a small colonial city about an hour from Guatemala City and is ringed by volcanos. It's history is one of Spanish Colonialism but there is a strong mayan influence as well. Our accommodation in the area was at Hostel La Quinta which was both affordable and perfectly nice and had a decent restaurant as well including an outdoor eating courtyard. Our first day we got our SIM cards from Tigo, went for a little hike down Las Cruces where we had great views of two of the volcanos, had lunch at a chocolate museum, visited a church, and went to Cafe No Se which is a speak easy type bar light by candles.
We finished with a great local dinner and headed home to get rest for the next day's hike up a volcano with Old Town Outfitters. I hope to get that one done in the next two days.

Lake Atitlan Guatemala Travel Guide | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Lake Atitlan is one of the most popular places to visit in Guatemala, and for good reason. Imagine a huge lake surrounded by volcanoes and dotted with traditional villages and small towns, each with their own personality.

Being that Lake Atitlan is easily accessible from the travel hub of Antigua, many travelers add a stay at the lake to their Guatemala trip.

You'll mingle with locals, backpackers, yogis and church groups on mission trips. You can choose to spend your time relaxing, hiking, volunteering, getting off the grid, hanging out with other foreigners, drinking a beer on the lake, cleansing your body and soul, or all of the above!

There are lots of things to do in Lake Atitlan, plus it’s perfect environment to get away from it all and simply relax. It's no surprise that people often end up staying around Lake Atitlan for much longer than expected.

Enjoy the video and make sure to let us know where you're watching from!

The GUATEMALA CITY they DON’T tell YOU about! (con subtitulos)

What comes to mind when you hear Guatemala City or Guatemala in general? Is it danger? That it is an unsafe travel destination? Well unfortunately for many who haven’t visited this beautiful country those are the words they use to describe it, especially when it comes to Guatemala City. Guatemala City is not only the capital of Guatemala but it is the largest city in Central America. Most tourists choose to skip it all together based on it’s bad reputation but over our years of traveling we have come to know to not believe everything you hear or read on the internet so we have made it a point to seek the truth. Is Guatemala City a good place to visit? Are there fun things to do in Guatemala City or is it a place you should stay away from? Well we hope that this video gives you a bit of an inside scoop as to what Guatemala City is like so the next time you fly into Guatemala you can give it a chance or not! #guatemalacity #guatemala

EVERYONE TOLD US NOT TO TRAVEL HERE: GUATEMALA CITY

In this video, we visit the infamous Guatemala City… a city everyone told us NOT to travel to. Everyone we spoke to, locals and travelers, told us that Guatemala City is extremely dangerous and that there is nothing to do. However, people telling us this made us want to visit even more! As full time travelers, we constantly remind ourselves that there are always many perspectives and sides to every story. Instead of listening to others, we decided to explore Guatemala City for ourselves. We hope you ENJOY :) Have you even been to Guatemala City?

Exploring Antigua Guatemala with Kids + Lake Atitlán Day Trip

Want to know more about what to do with kids in Antigua, Guatemala, where to stay and places we loved? We list it all for you here:

Where we Stayed:

* 5 bedroom Rental in Antigua Guatemala (Carlos was a great host - we booked through VRBO)

Places we Loved:

* Caoba Farm (we went every single saturday - they have a shuttle from one of the plazas that comes every 30 mins or so; they have free outdoor yoga classes overlooking the veggie gardens; art area for kids to paint and draw; a store with delicious select of healthy foods; fruits, veggies and vendors with breads and jewelry and soaps and even coconut yogurts & kimchi and such!)

* De La Gente Tours: We did the Peanut Butter Workshop, although all their programs look amazing. They work with local farmers/families so you really get an authentic experience while supporting the local community. The Peanut Butter workshop was so fun and interesting. Watch our video for more!

* Trip to Lake Atitlan: We hired a driver for the day - went to Lake Atitlan; when we arrived in Panajachel, we hired a private boat to take us to San Juan (where, upon arrival we hired a tuk-tuk to take us around to visit a local artist, local textile co-op (amazing to see how they get vibrant natural colors from insects and plants), local bee farm and local medicinal herb garden. (if we had more time we would have loved to stop at the chocolate making too); We then took our boat to San Pedro (although we only ate a late lunch there and didn't have much time to walk around the town).
(** TIP: Take the boat earlier in the day because after 3pm, the water gets very choppy. We found it easy to hire a boat/driver upon arrival- it cost us around $100 for the entire day.)

* Spanish School we'd recommend for Kids (& Adults):
Mundo Spanish School ; it was US$15 for both kids for 1.5 hrs. The teacher was wonderful with the kids - doing lots of arts and crafts. We stayed on sight while they were at class. The entire staff was wondeful.

* Masseuse:
Deet Lewis - This lady is amazing. If you are looking for a true body worker, she's wonderful. She works out of her home and only charges ~$20 for an hour. You can contact her at deetlew60@gmail.com

* Choco Museo:
(We accidentally booked the longer chocolate making tour but it ended up being a blessing and I'd highly recommend it (Bean to Bar Workshop)... even with kids! You learn so much about the Mayan history of chocolate making and various ways chocolate was made- into tea and drinks and grinding chooclate, tasting it all along the way...and then finally making our own chocolates, topping them with everything you can imagine!

Restaurants we Loved:

* Acai by Juanjo y Elena (the couple that owns this restaurant and everyone that works here are super friendly; great vegetarian and vegan food options, salads, sandwiches, smoothie bowls and juices!)

* Canela - best bakery in Antigua (We met the couple that owned this gem of a bakery at Caoba Farm - they have the most delicious breads and bagels and cookies... and vegan ice cream. Oh and the soups and sandwiches... everything was delicious. But hands down, mama's favorite was the vegan keylime ice cream pie!!)

* Market: The main market is actually open everyday - which makes it easy to go get fresh veggies and fruit and fresh tortillas daily! The market days', which tend to be an experience itself are more crowded and have more vendors on Thursdays, Saturdays & Mondays.

La Union Spanish School with Kids - Guatemala Daily Travel Vlog # 8 / 18

La Union Spanish School with Kids - Guatemala Daily Travel Vlog # 8 / 18
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you ever wanted to learn a second language but weren’t sure where to start?

On our first full day in Antigua, we headed to La Union Spanish School. I booked 3 days with them for our week-long stay in Antigua. We chose to use La Union because of their experience-based curriculum!

We started our day with an hour long Spanish lesson, each of us with our individual tutors. The kids had an awesome play space and very accommodating teachers who played and did lots of fun crafts with them.

After our morning Spanish lesson, we took the chicken bus to San Juan del Obispo for an artisanal chocolate-making workshop at D.Taza. We loved seeing how the chocolate was made from growth to roast to shell and so on!

When we finished our chocolate workshop, we broke off for lunch before heading back to La Union for an afternoon tortilla-making class!

This school taught us so much through the 1-on-1 lessons, epic field trips, and cultural experiences! We absolutely loved it here and totally recommend this Spanish School if you’re traveling to Antigua.

They offer daily plans as well as weekly plans. Everything is totally customizable. They can also pair you with a host family for a homestay, offer accommodations on site, and can hook you up with some volunteer opportunities as well! Check out La Union:

Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss any videos as we explore Antigua for the next week while worldschooling our 5.5 and 4 year olds. ????
