Timor-Leste
Country in Asia
Timor-Leste, or East Timor, a Southeast Asian nation occupying half the island of Timor, is ringed by coral reefs teeming with marine life. Landmarks in the capital, Dili, speak to the country's struggles for independence from Portugal in 1975 and then Indonesia in 2002. The iconic 27m-tall Cristo Rei de Dili statue sits on a hilltop high over the city, with sweeping views of the surrounding bay. ― Google

Atauro Island Timor - Leste 2023 HD 1080p

The first new sovereign state of the 21st century was Timor-Leste formerly East Timor. The name stems from the Indonesian/Malay word “timur” meaning east and “leste” which is the Portuguese word for “east”, East East. Timore-Leste is one of the poorest countries in the world with more than 40% of its 1.3 million population living on or below the poverty line. Timor-Leste GDP at purchasing power parity, PPP, per capita is USD 4,828. As a comparison, USA: $75,000. Australia: $62,000. UK: $56,000. Luxembourg: $141,000.

The Portuguese first settled Timor in 1520. The Dutch East India Company took possession of the western portion of the island from Portugal in 1640 renaming West Timor, Dutch Timor. The Dutch relinquished control of what is now called Indonesia in 1945. West Timor was absorbed into Indonesia in 1949. Portugal regained sovereignty of East Timor in 1945. East Timor declared Independence from Portugal in 1975. Nine days later Indonesia invaded East Timor on the pretext of anti-colonialism and anti-communist. The UN General Assembly condemned the invasion. Australia was the only country to abstain from condemning the invasion at the UN General Assembly vote. Over the next 24 years an estimated 300,000 East Timorese, 40% of the population, were murdered, endured forced starvation or disappeared at the hands of the Indonesian military. Britain, Canada, America, India and Japan were tacit in their response to the invasion and subsequent occupation. Britain, America and Canada sold arms to Indonesia prior to the invasion and throughout the occupation. In 1991 East Timorese resistance leader Xanana Gusmão wrote to the Australian parliament: Australia has been an accomplice in the genocide perpetrated by the occupation forces...

By 1999 due to increasing international pressure Indonesia accepted a UN brokered and internationally supervised referendum on Independence. In August 1999, 98% of registered East Timorese voters went to the polls, 78.5% chose independence from Indonesia. Prior to and following the referendum the Indonesian military supported militia, murdered hundreds of East Timorese, destroyed 80% of the country’s infrastructure and forcibly removed 250,000 East Timorese into West Timor. September 1999 the UN peacekeeping force involving 22 nations lead by Australia restored order. In October 1999, the Indonesian Government formally recognised the result of the referendum. On the 20th of May 2002, after 3 years of UN Interim Administration, Timor-Leste was free from 400 years of Portuguese colonialism, 3 years of Japanese brutality and 24 years of barbarity and genocide at the hands of Indonesia.

24 kilometers north of Dili across the Suva Sea sits the island of Atauro. Atauro, meaning goat in the local language, was a former Indonesian prison for East Timorese resistance fighters. Trade winds and the currents generated trap vast quantities of water in the Pacific Ocean northeast of the Indonesian archipelago causing a 20cm above average sea level in the Pacific. Similar forces acting in the opposite direction in the Indian Ocean cause a 10cm below average sea level. The 30cm height disparity between the two oceans creates a current named the Indonesian Flowthrough. The Indonesian seas provide a gateway from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean via a myriad of narrow channels, connecting seas and basins of varying depth. An estimated 22,000,000 cubic metres of water per second weaves its way through the complex underwater topography of the Coral Triangle at 4kph towards the Indian Ocean. This movement of water is so vast, that if the flow stopped there would be 23 hours in our day. In the middle of this current sits Atauro Island with its breathtaking, shallow and pristine coral reefs fed by the nutrient rich cooler water rising from a depth of 3,500 metres thanks to the Indonesian Flowthrough. Atauro Island has the enviable distinction of having the most diverse waters on our planet.

Despite its proximity to the well-known hectic tourist destinations of Indonesia and a short 90 min. flight from Darwin to Dili, few people, 24,000 in 2022, visit this resilient country. Timor-Leste is a place of stunning natural beauty, pristine deserted beaches, towering mountains, lush jungle and outstanding diving. The people are incredibly friendly and welcoming with a rich cultural heritage dating back more 43,000 years.

TIMOR LESTE

East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until 28 November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin) declared the territory's independence. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by the Indonesian military, and was declared as the country's 27th province the following year. The Indonesian occupation of East Timor was characterised by a highly violent, decades-long conflict between separatist groups (especially Fretilin) and the Indonesian military. East Timor - Officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste,Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a country in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island surrounded by Indonesian West Timor. Australia is the country's southern neighbour, separated by the Timor Sea. The country's size is about 15,007 km2 (5,794 sq mi)
Indonesian occupation (1975–1999) Indonesia's occupation of East Timor was marked by violence and brutality. A detailed statistical report prepared for the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation in East Timor cited a minimum bound of 102,800 conflict-related deaths in the period 1974–1999, namely, approximately 18,600 killings and 84,200 excess deaths from hunger and illness, with an estimated figure based on Portuguese, Indonesian and Catholic Church data of approximately 200,000 deaths. The East Timorese guerrilla force (Forças Armadas da Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste, Falintil) fought a campaign against the Indonesian forces from 1975 to 1998. José Ramos-Horta, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner, second President of East Timor The 1991 Dili Massacre was a turning point for the independence cause and an East Timor solidarity movement grew in Portugal, the Philippines, Australia, and other Western countries. Following the resignation of Indonesian President Suharto, a UN-sponsored agreement between Indonesia and Portugal allowed for a UN-supervised popular referendum in August 1999. A clear vote for independence was met with a punitive campaign of violence by East Timorese pro-integration

A Tourist's Guide to Dili, East Timor/Timor Leste

How to spend 24-hours in Dili, capital of one of the newest countries in the world.

After a short hop aboard Nam Air from Bali, I land in sleepy Dili. The Hotel Timor is a good base to explore the city on foot, where I see the Presidential Palace, the Santa Cruz Massacre Memorial, the port area and a church. I see lots of great statues along the way, too.

Then I catch a taxi to the Christ monument, and make it to the top to admire the view. After a brief stop by Dili Lighthouse, I end my day in Timor Plaza, where I enjoy a cooling beer in a rooftop restaurant.

Portuguese legacy and RICH HISTORY of a small Asian capital: exploring Dili, Timor-Leste

I've spent a day on November 6, 2022 exploring Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, learning its rich history while admiring Portuguese colonial legacy.
Started my walk at the Government Palace, I walked to Motael Church and took a taxi to Timor Plaza. In the evening I visited Colmera neighborhood.
The other day, on November 9, 2022, I visited Santa Cruz cemetery to learn about how some sad events changed the history of the country towards independence.
Stayed in a Plaza Hotel Dili for $76 a night. Shown my spacious room in the end of the video.
