SRI LANKA - Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage - පින්නවල අලි අනාථාගාරය - is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Currently being a home to 93 elephants, the orphanage takes care not only of the abandoned babies but also of those injured within the jungle. Some travel bloggers have negatively impacted this elephant sanctuary, saying not to visit it. But Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a conservation project, as their aim is to protect Sri Lankan elephants, a species that are considered endangered and at risk of becoming extinct. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is Sri Lanka's premier center for the care of orphaned elephants. This is located in a village called Pinnawala, near the town of Rambukkana in the Kegalle District. The place attracts a large number of local and foreign tourists daily. This site was established by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1975 on an area of 25 acres. In 1987, this place was handed over to the Department of National Zoological Gardens. This place will be open to tourists from 8:30 am, and tickets will not be issued after 5:30 pm. The tamed elephants at this place are taken for bathing at a nearby place called Ma Oya river. The Ma Oya is the third largest river in Sri Lanka in terms of size and water content. Sri Lanka's South Coast | Unawatuna, Galle, Elephants, and More!
These are our moments traveling as a family of four on a round-the-world trip, moving west across Asia to the island nation of Sri Lanka.
We flew into Colombo, spent the first portion of our trip based in Kandy, followed by Ella, and now down to the southern coast. We are based in Unawatuna, but also see Galle.
