Dublin Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia

Dublin – where history and heritage thrive, and good cheer abounds. Check out the top sights and stories of the capital city and start planning a trip of your own!

When ready, browse vacation packages to Dublin:

Despite a long and sometimes tragic history of invasion and resistance, this thriving business capital has poetry, music and literature percolating through its cobblestones.

While #Dublin proudly honours its past, it is equally passionate about enjoying each and every new day. Nowhere is life celebrated more than in the city’s nearly 700 pubs.

Of all the gifts, Dublin has given to the world, perhaps the most intoxicating are its stories. Originally built for the sons of the Irish gentry, the ivy-covered stone buildings of Trinity College are home to some of the oldest remaining manuscripts in the world, including the 1000-year-old Book of Kells.

Dubliner Jonathan Swift, once said, “May you live all the days of your life.” There is no better way to define Dublin. Its passion for life is contagious, captivating and sure to stay with you after your #vacation here for the rest of your days.

For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Visit Dublin –Things To Do and See in Dublin, Ireland

Come travel with us and discover the best things to do in Dublin, Ireland!

More than a thousand years old, Ireland’s capital is an enthralling destination to explore. Whether you’re looking to discover Dublin’s extensive history or get a taste of the pub culture, you’ll find it all on the eastern coast of Ireland.

Begin your Dublin sightseeing by getting to know the city’s past at the Kilmainham Gaol. This former prison, which dates back to 1796, most famously incarcerated nationalist leaders associated with the major rebellions, including the 1916 Easter Rising. The prison closed in 1924, and has since been restored as a museum focused on the story of Irish nationalism. Take a step back in history and embark on a guided tour of the largest unoccupied gaol in Ireland.

For more history lessons, continue your journey to the Christ Church Cathedral. It’s considered the seat of the Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic Archbishops of Dublin, and manuscripts date it back to 1030. The establishment has experienced many changes and restorations over the years, making it a prime place to trace the city’s history. Learn about King Henry VIII’s role and the church’s long rivalry with St. Patrick Cathedral.

After dabbling in Dublin’s past, head to Temple Bar to get a sense of the city’s culture. This cobblestone strip is considered the heart of its nightlife, but truthfully, it’s captivating at any time of the day. Spend an afternoon window shopping, and then step into one of the bars for a traditional pub experience—you’ll fit right in with a pint and a plate of pub fare.

No Dublin visit is complete without exploring the Guiness® Storehouse and the Old Jameson Distillery. The Guiness® Storehouse is home to the world’s largest pint glass, but it’s also where you can learn the story behind the popular stout and sip on the brew straight from the source. To keep the good times rolling, head across the River Liffey to the Old Jameson Distillery. Here you’ll learn what three ingredients make up the famous whiskey, and you’ll even have the opportunity to sip a signature Jameson cocktail.

On your next romp to Ireland, set out on Dublin tours for a peek into the country’s largest city. For more tips and recommendations to get you excited about visiting, watch our Dublin travel guide video.

Welcome to Dublin!

Like me before my trip, you might be asking yourself “what’s the appeal outside of the bars and all that Guinness?”. well firstly, this is a young person’s city; Dublin’s boasts Europe’s youngest population, where some 50% of people living here are under the age of 25. So yes, bars, nightlife, parties and Guinness are popular, though definitely not exclusive to this demographic. And while Dublin certainly does dabauchery famously, it’s only when you visit this old and beautiful city that you really see how the Republic of Ireland’s capital is way more than hedonistic haven for hen do’s and lad’s weekends away. Just take a mosey down the cobbled streets and it’s like nothing has changed over the last hundred odd years. The greatest thing about my time Dublin was realising that this city is one with a rich and colourful history. There’s a banging food scene, and of course, there are plenty of things to see and do during your trip. Coming up, I’m gonna tell you about transport, money and some of my favorite things to do, but first, let’s take a look at getting here.

The airport is 10km outside Dublin and is the only international airport serving the city. From here, your choices for transport to the centre are bus or a taxi, as there’s no train station at the airport.

Dublin airport’s Aircoach will take you to various locations across the city, so make sure you know which stop is nearest your hotel.

Dublin is compact, which means if you’re staying in the city centre, you can pretty much walk to everything. However, if you want to get around quickly, hop on a tram. The Lewes is Dublin’s tram system; there are two lines, red and green. And the walk from the end of the green line to the red line is about 15 minutes. Don’t forget to always tap in and tap out, otherwise you’ll get charged the maximum possible fare.

If you plan on making multiple journeys, we recommend getting a Leap Card. It’s Dublin’s public transport top-up smart card and you can get them at the airport or at local shops, wherever you see the sign.

Dublin’s nightlife is legendary, and Temple Bar is the centre of it all. Yes, it’s where all the tourists go, but Temple Bar is packed with pubs, bars, live music and clubs. If you want to have a great night out in Dublin, this is where to go.

Written by Irish monks around 800AD, the Book is a decorated version of the Paul Gospels that’s kept at the centre of an exhibition in Trinity College. Just don’t expect a photo, as no cameras are allowed near the book, no even ours! However, our highlight has to be the Long Room, holding around 200,000 books, it’s a vast collection that seems to go on and on and on and on and on and on and on, forever.

Next is Kilmainham Gaol, a former Irish prison that held many of the revolutionaries of the past, in particular, the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. Abandoned in 1924 and restored in the 1960s, it now serves as a museum where you can learn all about the history of Irish independence. The gaol is 3 and a half kilometers out of the city centre, so you’ll need to get the Luas or the bus here. Tickets are available online, you book your timeslot and the website recommends arriving 15 minutes before your tour is due to start. Because the museum can only take a limited number of people at a time, booking ahead is the only way to guarantee entry on the day.

Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland as well as its most populated city. It is however a small capital and one of the most walkable I’ve ever visited. For this reason, I don’t think a public transport card is needed for visiting most main attractions in the city center. The best way to explore is on foot.

For the record, none of this sponsored content, I make it for you guys to be able to travel effortlessly. So what should you check out when you’re in Dublin? Let’s goooo!

1) Ha’ Penny Bridge
This historic bridge over the River Liffey was built back in 1816, to replace the many ferries that shuttled people back and forth between the north and south side.

2) St. Patrick’s Cathedral
Founded in 1191 it is Ireland’s largest Church and National Cathedral.
St. Patrick’s day can be a lot of fun in Dublin, as long as you are up for the crowds!

3) Christ Church Cathedral
Founded in 1030 it is older than St. Patrick’s.

4) Dublin Castle
Built in the early 13th century, the castle sits on the site of a Viking settlement and has a colorful history.

5) Temple Bar
Here you will find unconventional boutiques, Cafes and most famously, pubs! Once a neighborhood frequented by locals, it has become tourist central. However there is a lot of history here and it’s a fun place to visit.

6) The Brazen Head pub
It’s been serving ale since 1198, that’s 825 years! It’s Dublin’s oldest bar.

7) Guinness Storehouse
If you’ve already traveled all the way to Dublin, you may as well learn the history of the country’s most famous beer. And learn to pour your own Guinness while you’re at it!

8) The Irish Whiskey museum
Opt for this tour over the more popular Jameson Distillery tour -- unless you love Jameson. At this museum you'll learn about the history of Irish whiskey and sample them too!

9) Trinity College
It’s Ireland's Oldest university founded in 1592 and the home of the Book of Kells.

10) St. Stephen’s Green
The park was reopened to the public in 1880 and is a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

If you love fun facts, Dublin is rich with history! I recommend you do a free walking tour of the city where local guides take you on a journey through the streets where history unfolded pretty much right where you’re standing. Several companies offer these tours. See which suits you best and reserve your spot!

If you are already looking at flights, I’d say you can see most major attractions in 2 days, but if you don’t want to be running around from place to place, I recommend a 4-day trip. That way, you can choose a museum or two that peaks your interest.

Other things to note:
It’s a pricey city to sleep and eat.

You’ll see the Irish language written on every sign along with English. Yep, Irish is a language! “Sláinte,” meaning ‘health’ is the Irish word for cheers.

An easy and affordable way to get from the airport to the city center is
the bus service called Dublin Express.

While you’re in Ireland, don’t stop at Dublin! Get some extra days off work and take a road trip around the Ring of Kerry. More about that in my video “Ring of Kerry: The Ultimate Irish Road Trip.”

Now get out of here and go explore!

Ireland Itinerary and Tips

My Map of Ireland Hotels & Activities:
id=1wCXZWE_vFh42HtdZB8wcfjCXsELfaifB&usp=sharing

May 18th THE ARRIVAL
-Arrive in Dublin 6:45 PM
-Get Cash at Airport for Food, Snacks and Tolls
-Get car with GPS.
-MONEY SAVING TIP: If you can drive stick shift, rent a manual and you will save a lot of
money. Automatics are more expensive to rent. It is a little difficult learning to drive and use stick
on the opposite side but you will get the hang of it. It's a fun little challenge but doable. However if
you aren't good at stick remember the roads can be narrow and they use lots of roundabouts that are slightly confusing.
-8 PM Grafton Street
-8:45 St Stephens Green:
-TIP: Most people do nothing the first night of vacation. If you are looking to do as much as
possible on your trip, do something relaxing like walking grafton street. It's nice after sitting in a
plane so long.
-Check in Aberdeen lodge

May 19th DEER, SPORTS, & FOLKLORE
-11:00 AM Phoenix Park (Wild Deer):
-TIP: Sometimes finding the deer can be tricky. The area near the Popes cross is sometimes
where you'll find them but they are also found wandering throughout the park. For some reason I
normally see them on the left hand side of the road as you head towards Castleknock. You could
hire bikes at the entrance to the park and if you see any park rangers give them a friendly wave and
ask them where they've seen the deer that day.
-2 PM Experience Gaelic Games:
-5:30 PM Book of Kells and Trinity College:
-6:30 Brazen Head- Folklore
-Drive to Hotel in Northern Ireland Hotel 1:53 hour Drive:
-BallyRobin Country Lodge in Northern Ireland:
-TIP: Northern Ireland Sites get pretty busy with tourists. We drive as close as we can the
night before so we don't have to wake up extremely early and still we beat the tourists to these sites.
Any time you want to be close to a place with lots of tourists I recommend staying as close as
possible and waking early.

May 20th NORTHERN IRELAND'S BEAUTY
-1 Hour Drive Time from Hotel to Giants Causeway with tolls.
-7:30 AM Bushmills- Giants Causeway:
-TIP: The Visitors Center of Giants Causeway open at 9AM and that is when the crowds
start to come. You are allowed to get there before 9 AM. I recommend doing so. Get up REAL early
leaving around 5:30 AM and getting there around 6:30 AM.

trail down the mountain.
-9:30 AM Ballintoy- Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

place has been too renovated and has too many people to feel authentic. So if kissing the stone
doesn't sound like your thing, and it was kinda moist and gross, then I recommend going to other
castles instead. BUT I wanted to kiss the stone so we did it anyway!

Dublin Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Dublin in Ireland.
Dublin is the capital of the Irish Republic and is a city of musicians, poets and dreamers. Its Georgian buildings, whisky distilleries and historic castles are tangible and colorful reminders of bygone times. Numerous well preserved buildings, cafes, churches and idyllic canals also add to the captivating atmosphere of this fun loving city.

One of the city's main landmarks is a splendid structure, Halfpenny Bridge, which derived its name due to a toll that was once extracted from those who crossed it.

Dublin Castle is one of the city's oldest buildings. It has seen much transformation and is a combination of several building styles. After the Vikings, the Normans conquered the city and ruled over it for 700 years and under King Henry VIII, Dublin became the capital of what was then a British colony.

Trinity College is Ireland's oldest and most venerable university. It was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I. The high standard of education offered here has attracted famous pupils such as Jonathan Swift, Henry Grattan and Samuel Becket.

Dublin's General Post Office was once the site of an important historical event. Under the leadership of Padraig Pearse and James Connolly, around a hundred men occupied the post office and thus began Ireland's struggle for Independence. In Easter of 1916, the Irish Republic was born.

Bursting with pubs and music, this most hospitable city is a wonderful combination of lively city life and infectious Irish blarney!
