What is so special about Niger! Niger has stunning natural beauty, especially in the Mountain ranges in the north of the country, but also houses a few old trading centers in the Sahara, such as Agadez and Zinder, that have a distinct mixture of arab/tuareg and black african culture.

Watch all the beautiful places recommended in Wikitravel.

Agadez — A mecca of trade along trans-Saharan trade routes for over five centuries, home to a magnificent palace and several mosques and a gateway to the nearby Air Mountains
Ayorou — Along picturesque section of the River Niger with one of Niger's best markets, and a starting point for river trips to Gaya
Diffa — Peul town between shifting sand dunes and disappearing swampland which serves as the gateway to SE Niger & Lake Chad
Dosso — has a small ethnic museum, colorful market and even more colorful chief's palace
Maradi — Center of agriculture (especially peanuts), home to a colorful chief's palace, and near seasonal rivers/floodplains which have caused interesting land formations to the south
Tahoua — Stop en route to Agadez
Zinder — The cultural capital of Niger, this Peul-Hausa city has perhaps the most colorful craft markets (pottery & tanning are local specialties) as well as a noteworthy regional museum and sultan's palace

Main Destinations

W National Park — magnificent National Park, easiest accessed from Niamey

Niger Overland - Niamey to Parc W

Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, and this was apparent as we drove through Niger from Mali, following the Niger river.

We stayed in Niamey (the capital city of Niger) while applying for our visa to enter Chad and visiting Parc W, our first wildlife experience on our overland Africa journey driving from the UK to South Africa in our land rover Defender TDI.

What we didn't expect was to meet a group of French students in Parc W, and to be invited out to join them in their research of hippos. The motto of the story? Don't trust students!

Land Rover Africa Overland
--------------------------------------------
Twenty years ago my wife and I packed up our life in the UK and set off to drive overland in our Land Rover Defender with the aim of driving all the way to the Cape Town in South Africa, a journey which will take us from coast to coast along the length and breadth of Africa.

Because this journey was twenty years ago, there were no smartphones, no google maps, and no digital cameras. The photos taken on the journey were on transparencies, designed to be projected. I have taken photographs of some of those slides for the purpose of showing in this video.

map of Niger

Niger or the Niger (/niːˈʒɛər/ or /ˈnaɪdʒər/; French: [niʒɛʁ]), officially the Republic of the Niger, (Hausa: Jamhuriyar Nijar, Zarma/Songhai: Nigér Laabo, Tamajaq: ⵜⴰⴶⴷⵓⴷⴰ ⵏ ⵏⵉⵌⵢⵔ, Arabic: جمهورية النيجر) is a landlocked country in West Africa named after the Niger River. Niger is a unitary state bordered by Libya to the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria to the south, Benin and Burkina Faso to the southwest, Mali to the west, and Algeria to the northwest. Niger covers a land area of almost 1,270,000 km2 (490,000 sq mi), making it the second-largest landlocked country in West Africa (behind Chad). Over 80% of its land area lies in the Sahara Desert. The country's predominantly Muslim population of about 22 million live mostly in clusters in the far south and west of the country. The capital and largest city is Niamey, located in Niger's southwest corner.

Niger is a developing country, which consistently ranks near the bottom in the United Nations' Human Development Index (HDI); it was ranked 187th of 188 countries for 2015 and 189th out of 189 countries in the 2018 and 2019 reports. Many of the non-desert portions of the country are threatened by periodic drought and desertification. The economy is concentrated around subsistence agriculture, with some export agriculture in the more fertile south, and export of raw materials, especially uranium ore. Niger faces serious challenges to development due to its landlocked position, desert terrain, inefficient agriculture, high fertility rates without birth control and resulting overpopulation, the poor educational level and poverty of its people, lack of infrastructure, poor healthcare, and environmental degradation.

Nigerien society reflects a diversity drawn from the long independent histories of its several ethnic groups and regions and their relatively short period living in a single state. Historically, what is now Niger has been on the fringes of several large states. Since independence, Nigeriens have lived under five constitutions and three periods of military rule. After the military coup in 2010, Niger became a democratic, multi-party state. A majority of the population lives in rural areas and has little access to advanced education. Niger is divided into 7 Regions and one capital district. These Regions are subdivided into 36 departments. The 36 Departments are currently broken down into Communes of varying types. As of 2006 there were 265 communes, including communes urbaines (Urban Communes: as subdivisions of major cities), communes rurales (Rural Communes), in sparsely populated areas and postes administratifs (Administrative Posts) for largely uninhabited desert areas or military zones.

Rural communes may contain official villages and settlements, while Urban Communes are divided into quarters. Niger subvisions were renamed in 2002, in the implementation of a decentralisation project, first begun in 1998. Previously, Niger was divided into 7 Departments, 36 Arrondissements, and Communes. These subdivisions were administered by officials appointed by the national government. These offices will be replaced in the future by democratically elected councils at each level.

The pre-2002 departments (renamed as regions) and capital district are:

Agadez Region
Diffa Region
Dosso Region
Maradi Region
Tahoua Region
Tillabéri Region
Zinder Region

Come explore the majestic beauty and hidden cultural riches of Niger, an African nation with one of the most captivating destinations. From its vibrant capital city, Niamey, to the undiscovered oases in the Agadez region, travel with us and experience the allure of Niger.

Our journey begins in Niamey, a distinct city with colorful markets, art galleries, and a wide variety of eateries and bars. We also visit the Niger National Museum, showcasing ancient artifacts and items from traditional local lifestyles, like tribal jewelry and handicrafts.

From Niamey, we venture deep into the heart of the country. Here, you will witness diverse and unique landscapes — from the towering sand dunes of the Tenere Desert to the lush riverside forests near Filingué. We also take time to explore age-old Islamic monuments, such as the spiritual oasis of Agadez, located on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Its sand-colored structures soar above the desert, making this an enchanting spot to relax and explore.

If you're looking for adventure, the remote regions of northern Niger are a perfect option. Enjoy a camel ride through the Akoshakurkur crater or scale the sheer cliffs of the Aïr Mountains. Among the oases dotting the rugged terrain, you may witness traditional African tribes still living in the area, going about their daily lives with little interaction with modern civilization.

Your exploration of Niger culminates in a trip to the dramatic Air and Takouré Falls, located near Tahoua. Here, you’ll witness the full force of nature as the streams of water cascading down the cliffs create a stunning spectacle.

Experience the beauty and wonder of Niger on this remarkable journey. From its captivating cities to its stunning landscapes, the unique environment of this African country awaits. Uncover all the hidden treasures and make lasting memories in an unforgettable destination.
