The ruins of the ancient city of Carthage, Tunisia

Carthage was the centre or capital city of the ancient Carthaginian civilization, located on a hill dominating the Gulf of Tunis. The city developed from a Phoenician colony into the capital of an empire dominating the Mediterranean. It was destroyed by the Roman Republic in the Third Punic War in 146 BC, then re-developed as Roman Carthage, which became the major city of the Roman Empire in the province of Africa.

The site of Carthage has essentially retained the elements that characterise the antique town: urban network, meeting place (forum), recreation (theatre), leisure (baths), worship (temples), and residential area. The conservation of the site guarantees the maintenance of the intact character of the structures thanks to the national listing of the Carthage-Sidi Bou-Said Park.

Tunis - discover the capital of Tunisia

Tunis - discover the capital of Tunisia

We leave Kairouan and continue to drive north. What a difference with the quiet south. It takes some getting used to the crowds and the noise.
It is a challenge to drive here. The traffic in the city is completely crazy.

There are lots of people in the souk. It doesn't feel completely safe in Corona times. We walk past all the souvenir shops. Unlike what people warned us about we are not harassed and no one is trying to sell us anything.

We wander through the souk and find a great roof terrace where we can recover from the heat and enjoy the beautiful view over the souk.

In the Bardo Museum you Can find Roman mosaics that come from the former Roman cities. The mosaics are very impressive and are well preserved. Unfortunately, the bardo museum is not only known for its collection of mosaics.

The attack on the Bardo Museum in March 2015 killed 21 people. During that time, several terrorist attacks took place in Tunisia, including one on a hotel in Sousse. The attacks had a major impact on the local tourism industry as major European tour operators ignored Tunisia. Since then, tourism has never fully picked up again. Now in corona time there are hardly any tourists except in the beach resorts.

While typically seen as a beach destination, Tunisia actually has an extensive list of surprising attractions and exciting things to do for those that choose to venture out from the sandy beaches and emerald waters. This North African nation has a little bit of something for everyone. From ancient ruins to bustling marketplaces; sweeping sand dunes to craggy mountains, Tunisia has a ton of hidden gems waiting for you to discover.

Tunisia was once a part of the Roman empire, and the cultural remains that the Romans left behind are more than enough to warrant a visit. Likewise, the history of the Arab Empires has also enriched the area with some of the most beautiful examples of traditional Islamic architecture.

Nearby Morocco oftentimes overshadows Tunisia, but that just means that the streets are a bit less crowded. Petty theft and minor crimes are common, so you might want to keep track of your belongings at all times, but by no means is Tunisia considered unsafe. Despite having a lack of tourism infrastructure, the nation is still up and coming. Visitors are lured in by its historic capital city, its gorgeous coastal towns, and the iconic Star Wars film set that can still be seen there.

The majority of visitors will start their trip in Tunis, Tunisia’s capital. From there, it’s very easy to access other Northern African destinations such as Egypt or Morocco. Tunisia can be a great place to spend a few days or you could easily spend a week or so discovering all there is to see and do. The sun-socked beaches are certainly high up on many travelers' itineraries, but if you're curious about what other attractions are worth visiting, watch this video to see our picks of the best things to do in Tunisia.

Sousse, Tunisia - Secrets of a Vibrant City #تونس #tunisia

Discover the vibrant coastal city of Sousse, Tunisia where history meets modernity. Find out the best places to visit and things to do in Sousse.

In this video, we take you on a journey to the coastal city of Sousse, located in the beautiful country of Tunisia. Our adventure begins with a 300 km bus ride from the capital city of Tunis to Sousse, where we check into a hotel located in the beach area. From there, we embark on a guided tour of the city, exploring its rich history and culture.

Our first stop is the iconic Ribat of Sousse, a large, fortressed religious complex built in the 8th century as a defensive structure against the Byzantine Empire. We explore the complex, which includes museums, training halls, and prayer rooms, and admire the intricate tilework and carvings that decorate the walls and ceilings.

We then venture into the bustling medina, a vibrant part of the city filled with shops, markets, and local restaurants. We try the traditional Tunisian dish, Chakchouka, at a local restaurant and visit the Great Mosque, which dates back to the 9th century. Next, we head to the Sousse Archaeological Museum, housed in an old palace that has been beautifully restored and renovated to showcase Tunisia's rich cultural heritage.

We end our adventure on a rooftop, where we take in a breathtaking panoramic view of Sousse and its surrounding areas. From there, we reflect on the contrast between the old and new, the traditional and the modern, that is so evident in this beautiful city.
