97-year-old Parachutist Tom Rice jumps on 75th D-Day anniversary

Tom Rice, 97, from San Diego, California, was among some 200 parachutists who filled the Normandy skies of France for the 75th anniversary of the invasion as they leapt from vintage C-47 Dakota planes in what was a moving sight. They were honouring the airborne soldiers who jumped into gunfire and death ahead of the June 6, 1944, seaborne invasion. Their engines throbbing, the C-47 transporters dropped group after group of parachutists. Mr Rice jumped in a tandem into roughly the same area he landed in on D-Day near Carentan, a town among the main targets for the paratroopers. He said: 'It went perfect, perfect jump. I feel great. I'd go up and do it all again.' They jumped from the C-47s in Second World War colours and other aircraft, aiming for fields of wild flowers on the edge of the town.

Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron watch airplane tribute to D-Day

Donald Trump today led world leaders including Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day in France and hailed the men who 'won this ground for civilisation'. More than 500 British and Americans veterans who stormed the Normandy coastline on June 6, 1944, have also travelled to northern France to remember their comrades who died there. Today President Trump stood in the American Cemetery and Memorial above Ohama Beach, where 2,000 Americans lost their lives, and described it as 'Freedom's Altar' during a poignant ceremony where he hugged US veterans and President Macron (right). Around 15 miles away above Gold Beach, where British troops landed, Theresa May paid tribute to the heroes who 'laid down their lives so that we might have a better life', calling them 'the greatest generation'. The Prince of Wales is representing the Queen in France today and was at Bayeux Cathedral where he and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, joined the PM and 300 British D-Day veterans for a service of remembrance (left). Afterwards hundreds of people lined the streets of Bayeux to clap them as they paraded to the nearby Commonwealth War Graves ceremony, with locals kissing them and shaking their hands as they passed (main picture, D-Day veteran John Quinn clutched the hand of George Sayer, six).

Canadian PM Trudeau tears up during D-Day speech in France

Thousands have lined the streets of Normandy to shake the hands of D-Day veterans today as Donald Trump led world leaders including Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron to mark the 75th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Europe. More than 500 men who stormed the Normandy coastline on June 6, 1944, have travelled to northern France to remember their comrades who died. Around 300 surviving British heroes have tonight gathered in Arromanches where British troops stormed Gold Beach 75 years ago today. Thousands lined the streets of the small seaside town - far more than at the 70th D-Day anniversary events there in 2014 - where they cheered and embraced the men as the walked to a ceremony next to the sand they raced across to battle Hitler's Nazis. With the D-Day survivors now aged between 90 and 100-years-old, Prince Charles, who was representing the Queen in France today, said today is 'deeply significant' because it is 'probably the last chance to pay everlasting respect to these remarkable people who wanted above all to do their duty'. Earlier today President Trump stood in the American Cemetery and Memorial above Omaha Beach, where 2,000 of his countrymen lost their lives, and described it as 'Freedom's Altar' during a poignant ceremony where he hugged US veterans and President Macron. He said: 'On these shores on this day 75 years ago, ten thousand men shed their blood - and thousands sacrificed their lives for their brothers, for their countries, and for the survival of liberty'.

A Service of Celebration for Commonwealth Day 2019 LIVE - BBC

Subscribe and ???? to the BBC ????
Watch the BBC first on iPlayer ???? In the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and other senior members of the Royal Family, Fergal Keane presents live coverage from Westminster Abbey in London of a service of celebration for Commonwealth Day.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined the Queen for a Westminster Abbey service to mark Commonwealth Day.
The royals and senior figures from national life marked the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth.

The theme of this year's event was A Connected Commonwealth, with member countries being urged to protect natural resources and the environment.

In her message, the Queen said the Commonwealth vision inspires us to find ways of protecting our planet.

Earlier Prince Harry and Meghan visited the Canadian embassy as part of Commonwealth Day celebrations.
The multicultural, multi-faith event at Westminster Abbey saw performances and readings from representatives from throughout the Commonwealth.

Grammy-winning group, Clean Bandit were the first to perform, followed by performances of North Indian dhol drumming, and a solo by an Australian aboriginal musician on a didgeridoo.

The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke of York also attended the service.

The Prime Minister Theresa May was in the 2,000-strong congregation, as well as Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Scotland, high commissioners, ambassadors, faith leaders, plus more than 800 schoolchildren and young people.

Cold-water swimmer, Lewis Pugh spoke at the ceremony to appeal for greater efforts to restore the health of the oceans.
Earlier, Prince Harry and Meghan kicked off the celebrations at an event at Canada House, to showcase Canadian talent in the UK.

The couple were welcomed to the embassy by Canada's High Commissioner to the UK, Janice Charette.

In her Commonwealth message, the Queen said the Commonwealth vision offers hope, and inspires us to find ways of protecting our planet, and our people.

We are able to look to the future with greater confidence and optimism as a result of the links that we share, and thanks to the networks of co-operation and mutual support to which we contribute, and on which we draw.

With enduring commitment through times of great change, successive generations have demonstrated that whilst the goodwill for which the Commonwealth is renowned may be intangible, its impact is very real.

The Queen famously dedicated herself to the empire, which later became the Commonwealth, on her 21st birthday in 1947.

The then Princess Elizabeth said: I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family, to which we all belong.

Emmanuel Macron praises veterans at D-Day 75-year commemoration

Normandy veterans were joined by Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron at Ver-sur-Mer in France for the unveiling of the monument. Mrs May has paid tribute to those who raised funds for the British Normandy Memorial which she said will ensure 'the legacy of those who died lives on'. Thousands of Daily Mail readers donated money towards the monument which overlooks Gold Beach, where British troops stormed ashore on June 6, 1944. The spectacular memorial lists the names of all 22,442 members of the fallen British servicemen and women who died in the Normandy campaign that year. Mrs May and Mr Macron laid wreaths at the foundation stone of the monument, while seven British D-Day veterans were accompanied by four children to lay flowers.
