Cocos Island - The mysterious island in the Pacific

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands

DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
Hey guys! My name is Jaxon Roberts and for the past few years I have been pursuing my dream of becoming a filmmaker and photographer. Since the beginning of my career, I always dreamt of capturing mind blowing locations that people haven’t yet seen before. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, fits this description perfectly. Haven’t heard of it? Neither have I until a couple of years ago! And it’s part of Australia (where I’ve lived my whole life!).

Located off the coast of Western Australia, this once coconut palm plantation is now just a tropical paradise with stunning beaches and deep jungles that you have to see to believe. Cocos consists of 27 islands, only 2 of which are inhabited.

Back in December of 2019, I was lucky enough to travel here with a bunch of other creative minded people . Lucky for us, we have friends that grew up on these islands and could show us all they have to offer. From camping on our own island under the stars and amongst hundreds of hermit crabs to swimming in the clearest water you’ve ever seen, eating freshly caught and cooked fish and drinking fresh coconuts, this experience was something I once only ever dreamt of. Whilst filming this paradise I had 2 goals: to take in and embrace the simplistic island life and to portray the true essence of our experience. I came home with some of my favorite footage I’ve ever captured and I'm so happy I can share it all! Thanks for watching, your support means the world to me!

A film by Gene and Josie Evans
Completed in 1976, part 1 of this two part sailing documentary was shot in 16mm color film by noted Hollywood cinematographer, Gene Evans, cameraman for Roots the miniseries, and many feature films.

Part 1: Running time: 90 minutes
Sail from San Diego, south down the coastlines of Baja California, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica with many stops along the way. It's a relaxing sail back in time before the onset of drug violence and civil wars. In Costa Rica, the couple's son, Ron, joins them for the offshore passage to the mysterious and uninhabited Cocos Island.

Pt. 2: Running time: 65 minutes
Sail from Costa Rica, where the couple's son, Ron joins them for an offshore passage to the mysterious and uninhabited Cocos Island. Along the way they have a close encounter with whales, hook a shark, and ghost through the doldrums. On the 8th day, they site Cocos Island and make a dramatic anchorage. Ashore, they discover signs of previous visitors carved into rocks and explore the dense rainforest. After several weeks, they set sail for the Galapagos Islands lying 450 miles southwest at the equator. There they visit several atolls where Darwin's discoveries led to his theory of evolution. Finally, they sail home on a nonstop 40 day, 4,000 mile ocean voyage to San Diego.

Going to Cocos Island (again) in 2021...

This is my second trip on the Argo in 2021 and, once again, Cocos did not disappoint. Dive cinematic starts at 1:10. See the May 2021 trip report here:

Highlights this trip were massive schools of hammerhead sharks, tuna and mating jacks. A lot of hunting activity and even some sunshine! Incredible crew on the Argo, as always!

Ep.213 Cocos Island & Boobies

We are told by an ancient Guna man of a bushwalk that follows a pipe that leads to a mystical magical lake where the Guna's pipe their fresh water from. I get a first hand look at how Gunas do repairs on this pipe and I like what I see. Nothing but quality here too.
We visit a place called East Cocos Banderos and I visit the remains of a wreck and come face to face with a barracuda. On coming back we meet my second favourite bird, a booby bird, which doesn't really seem to be scared at all of humans. And no I don't like the bird because of its name.
A huge mass of sargasm comes to surround us so before it starts stinking we make our getaway and head to West Cocos Banderos and have a late afternoon BBQ of snapper.

Give it thumbs a up if you liked this episode!

MYSTERIES OF THE ISLANDS OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN

Okay, so I decided to have a little fun on the ol' Google Maps exploring the many tiny islands scattered throughout the Pacific Ocean, many of which are uninhabited and/or have very little imagery representing what they look like. This was inspired to me while watching a video that discussed the mysterious disappearance of Amilia Earhart who was flying across the Pacific with the plans to land on a small island there before disappearing forever. Just having a little fun while making some discoveries.

Best Pacific Islands to Visit in 2023

The hundreds of island nations that make up the South Pacific may require some travel, but for many, the journey is well worth the trouble.

Unspoiled beaches, impressive historical sites, and a relaxed atmosphere make up this vast region, which is perfect for a getaway.

However, choosing which remote paradise to prioritize may be difficult given the abundance of islands in Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

That's where we come in. in this video we compared the best Pacific Islands based on traveler's feedback, expert recommendations, accessibility, and affordability, as well as the variety of attractions available.

COCOS ISLANDS AUSTRALIA

Cocos Trip 2019!
Spent two weeks staying on West Island in the Cocos Islands of Australia. Also did a day trip to the beautiful Direction Island.
Had a blast kitesurfing, snorkelling, surfing and swimming!

Island Tour - Cocos Island

Cocos itself is featured in the opening scenes of the island in Jurassic Park. It is green. Very green. It is much cooler than the mainland and it is often grey, overcast, and can be very wet On nearly every shore, the cliffs rise straight up from a tiny rocky coast and in some cases are towering. There are lots of waterfalls and wild rocky islets. The island is home to lots of boobies and frigate birds, various ranger stations, a waterfall, and a plunge pool. On land, it’s muddy, wet, and humid. Away from the paths, it’s jungle/rain forest/cloud forest and virtually untouched.

Cocos Island Expedition, Costa Rica, August 2019 With El Tour Caribe

We at El Tour Caribe went on our first group dive safari to Cocos Island. The 11 of us had a great time aboard the Okeanus Aggressor II. Our 10 night expedition was filled with fabulous moments with schooling hammerhead sharks, Galapagos sharks, whale sharks and incredible sea life. The crew was amazing as was the food and service. Cocos Island is a magical place - mystical, majestic and impressive. It was like being in your own Jacques Cousteau movie. Can't wait for our next expedition in the Red Sea!

Cocos Keeling Islands - Destination WA - Home Island
